Heath Bell Is Taking His Talents To South Beach
People are reporting it. Heath is leaving for new pastures. New stadium, new uniforms, new signature on the bottom of his paychecks. Bell is said to be headed to Miami for 3 years and 27 million dollars. Now, he didn't need to go all the way over there for the South Beach diet. We have books for that here too, Heath! But, it looks like his time in San Diego has ended. Fair thee well, Heath. Have fun in Miami, at least until we play the Marlins.
I made this fanpost as quick as possible to get the discussion going before the inevitable official "Goodbye, Heath" post from jbox or Dex.

So, this now leaves us with who as closer?
Frieri or Gregerson, right?
Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.
i wouldn't be surprised if they both saw action
they are very different pitchers in terms of matchups. gregerson is probably better suited against righty-heavy sets or good fastball hitters.
personally i like frieri’s stuff better as a closer whereas gregerson could be better suited to the relief-ace role a la mike adams – not strictly the 8th inning guy, but someone you could go to in heavy leverage situations. unless frieri or gregerson dominate i expect to see brad brach get some save chances before the end of the season.

we could also see
a trade or FA pick up of bullpen help, that could compete for closing Job. Could have closer by committee based on matchups
Scowling at Padres Losses since 1981
Probably some FA
Oviedo, Francisco, maybe Lidge. I would like to see them sign Francisco and Wheeler or Dotel.

hopefully someone we can flip
too many good pitchers coming up. brach/gregerson/frieri all have closer potential though being seasoned behind an experienced guy for a while is always a plus

Nooooooooooooo!
Probably best for the team as a whole, but I love da Heath, and believe that he did offer some valuable leadership.
This has made my current headache even worse! :(

queen of the rec fairies
although it broke our hearts it did not break our will the herd
Any Compensation?
Was Bell a high enough FA for the Padres to get any compensation from the Marlins under the new CBA? My guess is no given that compensation picks were almost totally wiped out – anybody know for sure?
I think the compensation part in the new CBA starts next offseason
I think, though I’m sure I’m wrong. This is not my forte.

CBA in effect, but Padres do get compensation
Just read report – Padres will get compensation pick after Round 1 and pick just ahead of Florida in Round 2
Yep since Florida's 1st round was one of the top 15 we get 2nd Rounder
Plus the sandwich round pick like you said.
Too bad Toronto didn’t end up signing him. They have the # 17 pick which would have been almost the best possible scenario for us.
