Padres Offer Bell and Harang Arbitration
Heath is a Modified Type A and Aaron is a Type B - which means the Padres would get compensation picks if the players opt out (I think). Hopefully Heath has come to his post-season senses and will go for the big payday. I think I am one of the few who would like to see Harang return. He is a steady presence, rarely injured and always gives the team a chance to win.

from what i hear
the padres and harang have come to a “gentleman’s agreement” that he will decline arbitration so the padres can get picks. After his success last year, aaron deserves a multi-year deal which doesn’t make sense for the padres to give. if he’s lucky he’ll get a nice payday from some team that doesn’t pay attention to his peripheral numbers which honestly weren’t that good.
he is a smart, gutsy pitcher and i think he’s better than his advanced statistics say he is. but he’s not as good as his traditional numbers say he is. given the huge amount of starting pitching talent coming up in the minors and the holes elsewhere on the field, it doesn’t make sense for the padres to hand out any multiyear deals to starters not named Latos. Even a year of arbitration at something like $7m is way too much to pay for a known commodity like Harang.
I wouldn't mind seeing Harang back either
He did good for us last year and is a good veteran presence.
Wouldn't mind seeing him
“Harang” around another year.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman
The problem with Harang is he'll hold up the kids.
We’ve got Latos, Stauffer, Luebke, Richard and either Moseley or Bass in the rotation, but there are lot of minor league starters who could fill in. There’s Erlin and Weiland who pitched well in AA, and It’s about time we give Castro a chance at the major league level. Juan Oramas may well be ready too, and Kelly is at most a year away.
That’s a lot of young starters near-ready to skip AAA at age 21-24 like Latos did. I’d guess all would get long looks in Spring Training, and the farthest along could get the 5-spot. That would allow Bass and Moseley to beef up the bullpen, especially if Bell leaves.
The front office must be thinking along those lines, or they wouldn’t have traded the insurance starter Leblanc. A couple of those guys would have to move out of AA soon, or they’d clog the pipeline, and it might be preferable for prized pitchers to avoid the Tucson “experience”.
Castro
think it may be time to convert him to a two pitch closer.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
I can see where that might make sense
But I wouldn’t want my rotation to be that young. I would want SOME PITCHER… ANY PITCHER on the major league roster to be a “veteran”.
Bell and Harang were the veterans (and Bell the leader) that we had on the team (for pitchers). I don’t really count what’s-his-face.
We lose Bell and Harang… and suddenly everyone is looking up to…. Stauffer (?) I like the guy, but he isn’t a veteran. He has two full seasons under his belt.
We are going to need some player leadership, and I just don’t see it ANYWHERE on our team…
should sign Chris Young
he would be a good veteran pitcher to look up to
