Ridiculously Early Linwup Guesses

After listening to Jed talk about where people might fit into the 2011 Padres' lineup, I could control my excitement for the season no longer. This PFOB is starting to freak out the people at the daycare that I walk by every day. Time to unload.

The only way I can actually envision this team, and dream about how awesome (or terrible) they might (or might not) be, is to try and guess what the lineup might be. Do we have a strong cleanup hitter? Can we bat so many left-handed hitters in a row at a right-handed pitcher that he has a mental breakdown on the mound? These are the questions I need answered, and I feel I can only answer them after I put on my Bud Black Thinking Cap and try my best to build lineups that will drive Sam insane.

Here goes.....

Star-divide

vs RHP
Jason Bartlett (R)
Chase Headley (S)
Orlando Hudson (S)
Will Venable (L)
Ryan Ludwick (R)
Brad Hawpe (L)
Nick Hundley (R)
Cameron Maybin (R)
Dominant Pitcher

vs LHP
Jason Bartlett (R)
Chris Denorfia (R)
Orlando Hudson (S)
Jorge Cantu (R)
Ryan Ludwick (R)
Chase Headley (S)
Nick Hundley (R)
Aaron Cunningham (R)
Dominant Pitcher

That sound good to everyone? Well, too f**king bad......because I know it sounds good to Buddy.

Yuck

That’s a lot of strikeouts at the top of the lineup.

I could say the same about you but I won't since I haven't seen enough to make that call.

Instead I’ll say you’re unproven- the same think I’d say about Mike Baxter.

This.

I like this lineup a lot. Keep Hundley at 7 and I’m not comfortable with Headley any higher than 6.

This

is close to what I was thinking, but with Hawpe and Ludwick switched up in the #4 and #5 spots.

Actually

forget it. My lineup doesn’t look anything like that.

My only argument against this...

is that, even if things go according to plan and Venable has a breakout year, it’s entirely possible that Will is the best (and maybe only) power threat in the lineup against RHPs (unless Ludwick stops being terrible). Why would you want him hitting 7th? And if Ludwick is the other power threat, why would you want them both buried at 6th and 7th when your best hitters are probably batting 1st and 3rd?

Again

I must stress, I do not see Brad Hawpe hitting 25 HRs….just an opinion, I know.

by John Gennaro on Jan 27, 2011 10:09 AM PST up reply actions

Me neither.

But I do think he and Ludwick will be the best power hitters in the lineup, unless something crazy happens and Venable or Headley suddenly break out. I’m hopeful, but not expecting anything in that regard. It’s a big year for both of them.

He and Bartlett have essentially identical career OBP.

So there’s no real difference. History suggests Buddy likes his second basemen batting second. So, logic seems to say Orlando will bat second.

by Zach (maestro876) on Jan 27, 2011 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

Him and Bartlett seem interchangeable, with the difference that Hudson has always been known as a leader and a cool-headed guy. I actually think he’s the only one who could handle the #3 spot and be consistent, otherwise him and Bartlett would be 1/2 and I wouldn’t care about the order.

Hudson
Bartlett
Ludwick
Hawpe
Venable
Headley
Maybin
Hundley

The idea of Ludwick 3rd

Sends shivers up my spine. However, if he’s the pre-Padres Studwick….I am perfectly happy with this lineup (would make more sense to have Maybin 8th though).

The key to have a winning lineup is...

To have as many H names as you can fit into it.

1.Hudson
2.Headley
3.Hawpe
4.Hundley
5.Hunter
6.Hoffman (SS* he just said he was done pitching)
7.Hunningham
8.Hudwick
9.Harang

While I would have preferred they traded Ludwick and put Cunningham in left fulltime,

it’s only fair to point out he had a nagging leg injury and was pulled off the DL early so he could be traded at the deadline. He said at season end his leg was killing him, and putting him in RF at Petco didn’t help his fielding or his hitting. Keep an open mind, like with Harang – they’re both coming in off injuries and were much better performers when healthy.

by wegotballsley on Jan 28, 2011 12:14 PM PST reply actions

BTW - forget platooning Venable against lefties. He's like Jed mentioned with Headley,

at his age and experience, it’s time for him to break out (or the club will have to make other plans), and you have to play full time to do that. 3B and OF are the two spots where the Padres have no shortage of candidates now, let alone in the next few years.

A very balance lineup

Reminds me of the balance 1996 Yankees lineup

it also reminds me of the balance lineup of the 2010 Mariners.

OF depth

i really hope that cunningham gets a chance this year. he’s shown flashes of brilliance in some limited PT. My guess though is that he won’t get a shot unless ludwick is dealt at the deadline, then he would duke it out with denorfia.

You need to understand how large the Petco affect is

and how it suppresses offense, especially early in the season. It makes the Padres’ offense look worse than it really is, always has.

3rd..

imo, its gotta be chase or hawpe. Ludwick doesn’t walk enough or take enough pitches to bat third. If hawpe tears it up in spring training, i could see Hawpe/Ludwick/Headley. Budbot says he likes to hit Chase fifth and Chase likes that spot… but he was technically our most productive cleanup hitter last year, so budbot might want to throw him to the fire and see if he can take the heat. i’d probably want to keep hawpe, headley, and venable separated in the linwup to keep them from the lefty specialists
