At the end of this month, the 73-year-old Ensch retires as the Padres director of military affairs — ending an era that saw the franchise at the forefront of efforts by professional sports teams to strengthen ties to the nation’s armed forces. "We were military before military was cool," Ensch said. "I love it when people on the outside refer to the Padres as ‘the team of the military.’ "
