Padres get all busted up by Cubs, 5-2. I told you those were Must Win Games back in May.
Some people, including many of our regular commenters, believe, perhaps rightly so, that jbox and I don't actually know what we are talking about.
They look at us and say, "Look at these two yahoos. All they really want to talk about is the players' hair and the various outfits that get worn on off days."
For you doubters, and for those who, for whatever ridiculous reason, believe that it's not possible that games in the spring have any effect on the outcomes of autumn, I point you to the first Must Win Game that the Padres actually won this season. Wayback machine: May 12, 2010.
Tomorrow is another Must Win Game. Better to collect them now than to need 5 in a row at the end of the year!
As we've been calling these Must Win Games, and jbox and I haven't really called that many games "Must Win" this season, we've actually managed to lose a few that we really really really wanted to win.
So where are we now?
The Padres now need 5 wins in a row and this is the end of the year.
There's no other way around it. If we lose another game, we're out of the playoffs. People may call me a doubter, but I speak the truth. People also doubted that those game back in May and June that we had to win actually were Must Win Games, but I bet you would've loved to have won maybe another game against the Nationals. Maybe we shouldn't have given up that Dodgers loss way back when.
So many opportunities. Now's the time to cap off the Best Season Ever. Don't forget, I called that one too.

Wait a minute
justdave has repeatedly told us not to worry.
Dex, are you saying that justdave is full of sh-t?

he's not full of shit
But if you’re not worried now, then I’m not sure what it would take to get you worried. Justdave is apparently the one cool cucumber after the all the Titanic lifeboats were deployed. Justdave is the dude on Alive who said, “Relax peeps. Let’s just eat that dead dude’s ass.”
Justdave is a zen master.

I went from worry, to panic , to depression:
Then I read about Adrian’s Chicago dream and landed on furious.
i doubt i could hit depression
this team has given me far more than i expected to see from them this year. no matter what happens i will be happy to have been a part of it.

I hit furious last night watching three straight strikeouts after two runners got on.

Same with me
Although I went from depression to acceptance, to boredom, to curiosity, to arousal, to an ATM, to kind of itchy.

Season over?
Don’t try and correlate proper criticism of the Padres play lately with a total lack of faith. Of course they can pull it out, BUT they have to get back to playing small ball. Waiting for a 3-run homer is the stupidest way to try and win the game (unless you are the Toronto Blue Jays).
Choosing to not run yourself out of an inning,
does not mean you are waiting around for a 3 run home run. Runs are scored from first on doubles and second on singles all the time. The Padres slowed down their running game because their fastest players cannot get on base. Forcing the issue by running with wrong players does not help, it hurts. The game always comes down to pitcher / batter contests. You win those contests you win the game, otherwise you lose.
Good news, everyone!
Our odds to win the Wild Card are totes better than the Giants’ (6.2% vs. 3.4%). Suck it, Giants Fan!

the Braves would have to completely collapse the last 4 games.
Philladelphia has clinched the East, and they’ll be resting players when they head to Turner Field.
Worse yet, the Pads have forgotten what won them games in April through part of August: stealing bases, taking pitches, and playing station-to-station baseball.

This right here
I kept telling people that Dion would be the MVP. Every time he gets into the swing of things, he gets hurt. DX
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
Tonight's game is the MWG of the century, if we lose this game it is over.

Lets go Pads!
I still believe. MLB will rig something these next 2 games so there will be some excitement for the last series. I’m hoping for a bunch of calls to go our way and a bunch of bad calls for the Braves and Giants.

You sound like my dad
When I was a kid I remember him saying he was convinced the World Series was rigged to go 7 games so everyone could rake in the most cash.
Sadly he was proven wrong the moment I bought a ticket to see the Padres-Yankees game #5. :(
Were you refunded?
