  • PADRES: Ludwick returns to Busch Stadium
"I got to be thankful for Tony," Ludwick said. "If it wasn't for Tony ... he gave me the opportunity to be an All-Star in the big leagues, to become the player that I am."

  • Young to start for Padres on Saturday - SignOnSanDiego.com
"I think he feels good about his arm and we like his command and his experience," Padres manager Bud Black said today. "We think this is a good place for him. Pushing him back and having him make his first start later wouldn't make much sense."

  • Cardinals knock Padres out of first - SignOnSanDiego.com
"You can’t rely on the pitcher to get in runs," said Padres manager Bud Black.

  • Padres hope to end Busch Stadium blues | padres.com: News
Busch Stadium hasn't been real kind to the Padres, who began a four-game series against the Cardinals on Thursday.

  • Padres' Bell gaining confidence in curveball | padres.com: News
There's no rhyme or reason as to when Padres closer Heath Bell will throw his curveball, which is considered a plus pitch for him and a big reason why he's reached the 42-save mark for the second time in as many years.

  • Ludwick returns to St. Louis with fond memories | padres.com: News
Ryan Ludwick made his return to St. Louis on Thursday with his new team, the Padres. He spent most of his time, though, talking about his four seasons with the Cardinals and what it meant to him.

  • Young set to start Saturday vs. Cardinals | padres.com: News
Padres right-hander Chris Young, who has been sidelined by a shoulder strain since the first week of the season, will start Saturday against the Cardinals.

  • Shutout costs Padres grip on NL West lead | padres.com: News
Only once in the eight innings Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook was on the mound on Thursday did the Padres get anything that even initially resembled an extra-base hit in a 4-0 loss that sent them into second place in the NL West.

I don't begrudge them for being excited about being in first place but...

holy schnikes. They really are acting like the season just ended and they won the division. I desperately hope we can catch some of the fire that we had for the first 3/4 of the season and take this thing back.

    Again

I point to the fact that many of these Giants fans aren’t accustomed to success. This is a first for many. Or at least since they were kids. 7 years can be a long time between playoff appearances, especially for a passionate fanbase.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

    I can attest to this

When Giant fans were at the ballpark, they werent accustomed to success and didnt know how to act when they are winning and win. They turned into a bunch of obnoxious, sometimes belligerent twits.

Nah. We’re not bitter at all. I just wish they wouldn’t have cancelled the 2002 series in the middle of game 6. Would have been interesting to see how that played out, I think we would have won it.

    In all honesty

I’d be happy with a Wild Card win. Only half-game behind Atlanta, and the Braves have to play 2 more series with the Phillies.

Obviously, NL West Champs would be preferable, but I’m not going to cry if we pull in as the Wild Card.

    In a weird way

I actually prefer the Wild Card spot. I know it means less playoff home games to actually attend but the Padres seem like a better road team at times and I like our chances “On The Road” as Kerouac might say…

One of the reasons to bat the pitcher 8th is to pull him for a pinch hitter late

The theory being that the pinch hitter is better than the #9 nine hitter. LaRussa didn’t pull Westbrook late yesterday. Defeats the purpose.
