Clayton Richard gives up a billion runs in loss to Rockies

"Hello Mr. Baseball. How was your stay in the humidor?" "I wasn't in the humid-- I mean-- good."

I didn't watch the game, but I didn't need to watch it to know that the Rockies slyly started using the juiced baseballs in the third and fourth innings, instead of in the late innings as they usually do.  They are a crafty lot... allegedly.

I know you don't want to walk players in Coors, but pitching to Tulowitzki wasn't a good idea today.  He drove in 7 runs including two 3 run homers. Some of you might say that he must have been cheating and maybe he was but I refuse to comment on it.

In other news Adrian Gonzalez hit two home runs, the second a three shot.  Everyone can agree that these home runs were not tainted, hit on the up and up, the product of hard work and would have been out of any park in the league.  There is a right way to hit a homer and thankfully Adrian does it the right way.  I declare a moral victory.

Go Padres!

Yeah, its still a Rockies win

Even if they cheated. The idea that they cheated to do it makes it worse because the loss feels unfair.

I would think that a lot of their home field advantage comes from hitting at the bottom of the inning on the moon

If the home team’s pitching implodes, the home team hitters still have a chance to launch one (or a dozen) balls out of Cape Canaveral—-I mean Coors Field.

That’s one hell of a home field advantage. :-/

He was doing great though

His 6 starts prior to that were all real solid including starts against Colorado (though on earth) and Philly. Doesn’t mean he/padres wouldn’t benefit from a spot start by CY, but I don’t think he needs it. I’m not sure CY would be an upgrade if he’s lost a couple MPH.

Anyone else surprised by the Pads decision to pick-up Carrillo again?

I’m mostly concerned because they designated Italiano off the 40-man to make it happen. Apparently they’re happy with their bullpen depth but not starting rotation depth, no matter how crappy.

TBD

I imagine

That at this point they are going to make Carrillo into a reliever. That’s what many scouts that he’d become when the Padres drafted him. I think it may be a bit of gamesmanship with Italiano guessing that no one will pick him up.

When he was up with the Padres last year

His fastball was in the low 90s. He was throwing a curve, fastball, slider and changeup. I don’t know what he got up to this year.

thanks to Twitter feed from someone who broke down Italiano’s work (sorry I can’t make exact attribution-@Normandie?) …I am not so confused at to the DFA of today. Though he will be 27 in April, Carrillo no doubt has a “live” arm…

It’s always nice to come around. Anywho, just heard Hacksaw on the radio saying that he heard from a reliable source that Saturday’s starter (Lubeke) in St. Louis will be replaced by Chris Young. Has anyone else heard anything about this? That was the first for me.

CY back. Yes

Little surprised that folks are aghast at prospect of CY getting a start. If you have any chance to get CY, a vet pitcher with playoff experience and history of success, you take that step. At 31 years of age, Cris Carpenter, who granted has had a better career than Chris Young, pretty much missed two whole years & came back strong. Though the odds are not great that CY comes back to form quickly, I believe you see now what he has . I like Luebke but it’s not like he is a ’can’t miss’ phenom.

I agree

And as Corey Brock is apparently suggesting, you could start CY Saturday and pair him with Luebke if need be.

by jctess on Sep 15, 2010 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

The problem is that CY's velocity is down and he hasn't faced major league pitching since April

He fared well at AAA and dominated a High A start as he should. I like CY, but I’m hesitant to put place too much faith in a recuperating pitcher who was throwing in the mid-80s. :-/

Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...

by sdchicken on Sep 15, 2010 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

So why is Jed Hoyer and Padres brass going to give CY a start ?

After all, his velocity is down and hasn’t faced major league pitching since April.

You give the guy the ball because he has 1st/2nd starter success at this level. You give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise. He obviously knows how to pitch and has pitched in games in October and had success. Yes. you skip Luebke’s start – not even a question.

Plus

if he implodes and only goes two innings or something, Luebke can come in for the salvage or it’s the same as LeBlanc and/or Correia pitching.

CY would only be able to go 4 to 5 innings. St.Louis is really in the dumps. Hope the Pads can finish them off and take 3 of 4.
