San Diego Padres Fan Confidence Poll: 9/13/2010

This is definitely not the Padres team that we have been accustomed to seeing play over the vast majority of the season.  Just as it was hard to pinpoint  why the Padres were winning, it's now difficult to figure out why they're losing.  I always just attributed the team's success to magic, now I guess the magic is gone.

The Good News:

  • The Padres are still in first place by .1 percentage point.
  • Chris Young feels he's ready to pitch in a Major League game.
  • Jerry Hairston Jr. has been activated.
  • Tony Gwynn Jr. will probably be available at some point during the Rockies series

The Bad News: Just about everything else is bad news.

The rules are simple. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no confidence at all, 10 being absolute confidence, How confident are you in the San Diego Padres organization?

"Confidence" is just about anything you want to interpret it as. The front office, the future prospects, the play on the field, the park, etc etc etc

Poll
On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being "not confident at all" and 10 being "absolute confidence": How confident are you in the San Diego Padres?

CY

Didn’t someone say his fastball was topping out at like 87 or something like that?

by Drama on Sep 13, 2010 9:16 AM PDT reply actions

I think so

I think I heard that on 1090 this weekend.

by scout1222 on Sep 13, 2010 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

He is no where near ready to take a rotation slot.

If they activate him, he will probably fall into the emergency starter role.

by field39 on Sep 13, 2010 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

The last thing we need is CY out there throwing batting practice...

….and giving up half a dozen stolen bases. No thanks. I’ll take my chances with Latos, Lube-Key, Clay Dick, Garland and TIMMMAY.

by Drama on Sep 13, 2010 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Hmm

Maybe I should move that under the bad news category.

by jbox on Sep 13, 2010 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

You have to like CY's

competitiveness, if not his ability right now. At least someone besides the fans seems hell bent on wanting to win the NL West.

Methinks we should give him a start, but only at PETCO or Dodger Stadium where he has a little more room for error.

In baseball emotions can play against you, not for you. Being hell bent on want to win, may be the exact thing that is holding them back.

by field39 on Sep 13, 2010 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Point taken

To me, being hell bent on wanting to win is an advantage on the mound but maybe less so with hitting.

by Smoove V on Sep 13, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Is that what his fastball is supposed to top out at?

I don’t remember him throwing it much harder than that.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

by Wonko on Sep 13, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

When he is going well, I believe CY tops out `round 90.

The issue is that CY relies on deception so losing even a few MPH off his fastball is a big deal IMHO. Giving hitters that extra split second to react could be the difference between a fly ball out and a fly ball 10 rows back.

by Smoove V on Sep 13, 2010 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't know that I've ever seen CY throw 90,

Maybe on a juiced radar gun, but I doubt it.

I'm going off my memory of the Channel 4 broadcasts a few years back

Maybe the Channel 4 gun was a little juiced but I distinctly remember CY being able to hit 90 – 91 on the gun.

It wasn’t often but when CY needed a little giddy-up he could dial it up past 90.

by Smoove V on Sep 13, 2010 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Last I remember...

CY was doing just fine almost throwing no-hitters with a 89mph fastball.

Never was a fireballer.

6 but is it a bad sign when our

announcers start talking about optimism “next year” as was the case yesterday? I really miss when we used to be a threat on the basepaths as well. We got a solid core in some players (as well as lot of garbage we can probably write off) to make for fielding a “competitive” team for the next long while. It makes me teary-eyed to say but “at least we exceeded expectations” unless of course we lose the rest of our games and PECOTA is closer to being right on. One day we’ll be able to score runs now that manufacturing them only works against Los Doyers.

There's an old woman's stocking in my soup!

2 out of 3 from the Rockies and we will be back on track. Anything less and it will be a struggle.

For the first time in many months, I no longer believe they will make the postseason. I don’t see them outplaying the Giants and Rockies the rest of the way.
I was having strong doubts last week, but still saw some hope.

I hope I am wrong, but I’m just being honest.

by strummer on Sep 13, 2010 10:54 AM PDT reply actions

Trending down to 6

but methinks the rarefied air of Denver will wake up the bats.

The Pads need to light up Jeff Francis and get into that bullpen early. That should put additional pressure on the starters for the next two days and hopefully set the Friars up for a clean sweep.

by Smoove V on Sep 13, 2010 10:58 AM PDT reply actions

I'm still at a 9 for "confidence in this organization"

If you asked me for confidence in them going to the playoffs or confidence that they’ll get their heads out of their asses, well, that you be much lower.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

27 people voted zero?

hilarious. why even take the time to visit the site then? surely one must have better things to do than to come to the website of a team they have literally Zero confidence in. then again, maybe i overestimate people’s lives…

look i hear you

but i think zero is extreme. 3? ok. 2 even? yeah maybe someone is mad at their team.

but zero? shit i have more than a zero for the Royals, and i don’t even care about them.

a zero, to me, not only means that you don’t expect them to win again this year, but you don’t thinkk they will ever win because the organization is crap. you dislike the stadium, the owners, the GM, the players, everything.

i understand that people are frustrated. but a zero? come on man, lets be realistic here.

A zero (or a 10) seems pretty extreme, and lacks perspective. But this losing has affected people in different ways.

8 down from 9

I think we still have a very good chance of making the playoffs. Of course I thought it was a lock about 2 and a half weeks ago.

The starting rotation is undoubtedly improved with Stauffer and Luebke over Correia and LeBlanc. Since snapping the 10 game skid the bullpen is great again.

The offense has been slumping hard, but maybe 3 games on the moon will help snap em out of it. From August 1st through the 26th they scored 4.88 runs/game. With the return of Jerry they still have that same offense plus Eck, Cunningham, Durango, and added bench depth.

Everyone was making a big deal about the reds getting swept by STL to lose sole possession of 1st back in August. Then STL fell off, and the reds won their next 7. Now they are 6 games up in the central.

If the padres position players can get some confidence back this is a very good team that can hang with anyone in baseball.

“The Slump” shook me. The offense has been miserable. My “confidence” is shook even if I “like” the organization.

It is time for radical propositions, and dramatic solutions

If we end up not making the playoffs (today’s % is <50% for the first time in I don’t know how long…)…

I think we need a regime change… dex, jbox… off with their heads (literally). Clearly, this losing month can be attributed to them.

I look for the gaslampballer who wishes to replace them.
To you, I pledge my unending loyalty… until the next end-of-season collapse. At which point, I will demand your head….

We REALLY need to do well this week on the road. We’ve been a solid road team this year. thinking good thoughts

OH CRAP....

I thought the poll was “how many runs will the Padres score during the series against the Rockies?”

So, I was like… 0 is unlikely, but I understand why so many voters chose “0”. The people who said “10”, they are clearly smoking crack… I think “5” is about right.

:)
Seriously though, if we score 10 runs in this series I would be thrilled. We scored 6 against the Giants (four games), 10 against the Dodgers (three games), and 7 against the Rockies (three games).

A week ago I was at a 6

and I’m still there; we had just taken the first two against L.A. to break the 10-game slide, and I said we had to win 3 of 4 against S.F. and then 2 of 3 against the Rockies. With the sweep of the Dodgers, if we’d pulled that off, I would have been back up to an 8.

Now the only way for me to move up is to win all 3 in Colorado and at least split in St. Louis and win the L.A. series; the Giants have the easiest schedule remaining, and following a 4-6 homestand, a 7-3 road trip would somewhat counteract that. If we can’t win all 3 in Colorado (a tall order), then we just can’t lose a series on this trip.
