Padres letting season slip away, lose 3 of 4 to Giants

The much hyped match up between Lincecum and Mat Latos didn't live up to the billing.  Latos had his second worst start of the season and as a result the Padres were never in the game.

The Padres offense can share in the blame as they continue to swing ice cold bats.  This team over the past few weeks remind me of the Padres of the last two seasons, they make it look impossible to score.  I don't think they even believe they can score at this point.  In the last 4 games they were only able to score 5 runs total.

The Padres better start winning tomorrow or their chances of making the playoffs could be next to nothing by the end of the week. The Giants and Rockies are playing their best baseball of the year and the Padres look awful.  It's frustrating for all of those involved.

Well maybe not Bud Black. I'm listening to him right now on the Post Game Show talk about how excited they are to be in first place in this great NL West race. The problem is that this is a marathon and our rivals have already started their kick going into the last two miles and we hit the wall at mile 20.  Better suck down some Gu and pick up the pace.

Snap out of this funk Padres! 20 games left, it's now or never.

The padres just look lifeless

I hope Jerry can get back to playing in the field soon and maybe provide some energy. I would also like to see Bud give Cunningham and Baxter a shot. Maybe they would actually play with an ounce of enthusiasm. Cunningham if I remember correctly had a great series in Colorado the last time we were there.

The worst part

Is that people at the games seem to be like “schucks, same old Padres” and dont really seem to care. Why isnt this team getting booed off the field. The last two weeks have been nothing but awful baseball.

The real answer could involve turning this question around

The Pads have been one of the pleasant surprises in MLB this season, leading their division for, what, the last 3.5 months? And yet, they average only 25k a game, 19th of 30 teams.

The fans really haven’t supported this team at all, at least not in terms of attendance. I find this sad and troubling, but to imply that the managers and players don’t care is pretty dumb, when it seems, by all accounts, they’ve pretty much played over their heads all year, until the last couple of weeks.

There are a lot of people that don't believe in booing their own team

They want to believe that they’ll turn it around and not turn on their guys. Other people like to kick their team while they are down. Its just a difference in philosophy.

it’s just really tough to exude confidence in this ballclub right now. They’re playing like crap and have completely choked away a 6.5 game lead in two weeks. I’m sure if we sweep the Rockies all the fans will be brimming with confidence again.
The Padres better pick it up, otherwise they may go from first place to third place in three days.

But the old school baseball feel can mean a lot of different things for a lot of different people. I mean, for me old school baseball is wooden bleachers, manual scoreboard, no video board, etc. But for someone else it can be something totally different.

I like petco park

I think it’s a great stadium in a good location. Most people I talk to like petco park as well. I think the attendance problem has a lot to do with the two seasons prior to this one. The team cut payroll a ton and the padres stunk. Our attendance is up from last year. If they put a good team on the field again next year I’m sure attendance will continue to rise.

by Antonio Olivares on Sep 12, 2010 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

It has nothing to do with the stadium

which is as nice or nicer than Coors. After 2 down years, ownership change (and salary dump) and in the midst of a recession – season ticket sales are way down, thus small crowds. Small crowds = shitty experience. I went to some games at Coors in 06 and it was sad. Hopefully the new ownership and better results will increase attendance and make the experience better.

Does old school feel mean cramped, cold, smells like weed and has one of biggest scoreboards in all the major leagues? Also, it doesn’t feel too old school when you see the $50 charge for parking next to the stadium.

by ABY on Sep 13, 2010 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

I honestly don't know what to think.

Up until this series, I’d never had a problem with Giants fans at Petco, or in general, even. I went up to San Francisco for the series in May, and I didn’t get anything more than a friendly ribbing. And in the past when they’ve come here, it’s only been small pockets of jackasses, with most of them being pretty good. I think it’s partly the heat of the playoff race, and partly the anonymity of giant crowds making people feel like it’s okay to be a total f__kwit.

I mean, if you look at Dodgers/Cubs/Red Sox/Yankees fans, the common thread is that they show up in large groups and act like total shitheads.

In short: Go to hell, Giants fans.

by Darklighter on Sep 12, 2010 11:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I can pretty much say the same about the Giants fans

In the past I’ve just collected a few anecdotes about potsmoking Giants fans at Petco. The games were not highly attended (although I’ve always noticed more of a boost from Giants fans coming that say Rockies or Diamondbacks fans) or they were back when the Padres had a higher season ticket base and could outnumber opposing fans. I would say that at least half I encountered were with a significant other that was a Padres fan.

There seemed to be some differences with this crowd. The general asshattery has been discussed, but I also wonder if there is a different breed of Giants fan. Some of these fans are in their early 20s. That means that when the Giants went to the World Series they were in their early teens. They were barely born when the Giants made the series before that or when they had the great pennant race of 1993. They don’t remember the 49ers as anything other than cellar dwellers or possibly as the Mariucci plaoff one-and-dones. They aren’t used to winning or winning with dignity. I would imagine they’ve also grown up with everybody hating on Bonds, their best player and only hope for years. That might create a me against the world mentality that makes them feel entitled to rub whatever success they’ve had in others’ faces.

Pop Psychology Wonko out.

Against Francis for Colorado, who is making his first start in like a month or something. He didn’t get to pitch a rehab game either since they needed him to replace the injured Cook. I read that he will likely be limited to 60-70 pitches which is good for us, get to their bullpen early in this series.

I like Luebke hopefully he gets another good start and Black keeps him in the rotation through September.

You can also combine that frustration with the umpire’s shitty day. Even the best pitchers have to pitch on days where they don’t have their best stuff. I get the feeling that maybe he hasn’t had a day like that in a long time. Poor timing for such a breakdown, but it happens. Garland sees it happen all the time. Hopefully Latos will learn to deal with it better or maybe we can just bank on it not happen that often to him.

After some thought

I hope this turns out like 2006 when the Dodgers won that miracle monday game with the 4 straight home runs to take over first, then the Padres went on and won the division anyway. I have about the same feeling of being kicked in the nuts now that I did in 2006, so maybe its a sign.

by DiabloRojas on Sep 12, 2010 11:03 PM PDT reply actions

That team had fight in it

the Dodgers went out, hit 4 solo homers in a row. The Padres scored in the top of the 10th, and then Nomar ended it. The Padres showed some testicular fortitude not only by scoring in the very next inning, but winning the very next day when all you heard was ‘Padres are going to choke! They’re finished!’
What does this team do now? Lose more games.
