Diamondback walk off homer spoils Padres 5 run comeback

via www.fangraphs.com

Adrian Gonzalez's thrilling two out, two strike, 9th inning game tying home run was wasted when the Diamondbacks' Chris Young hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th.

Tough loss, but the Padres mounted a valiant comeback after being down 0-5 through 5 innings. Clayton Richard had a dreadful 4th inning. He gave up 4 runs including one on a wild pitch during an intentional walk.

In the 6th Ludwick scored Tejada on a ground rule double.  Then Chase Headley singled in Gonzalez, followed by a sac fly by Nick Hundley to make the score 3-5.

Like the Goonies the Padres never say die.  In the 9th inning Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a solo shot followed by Adrian Gonzalez's game tying homer. The excitement was short lived.

Unfortunately Luke Gregerson couldn't hold the lead and gave up the walk off.

I hate to lose a game like this, but it's kinda better than losing a blow out like it appeared they would half way through the game.

Padres series record falls to 19-13-4

Padres are going through their first slump of the season

Every team goes through it

Only questions are how long the Padres stay in it and how quickly they can get on the right path

What's he saying?

Oh and I’m gonna say it again, I’m glad Webb was sent down and not Ernasty.

as he should

outside of this season, it has been tremendous for the future of this franchise. Ton of youth and great coaching staff — squad finally built for the ballpark – what is there to bitch about ?

They are back.

That was my team. The one that scratches and claws until they win, or run out of innings.

Chase Headley can't hit for power

as you know...

stowed that beef away in June. I do think it is hilarious though that guys like Deno and J.Hairston are neck and neck with Headley in HR dept. Padres might as well give Headley another year (2011) to see if he can deliver more sock. The other day, for the heck of it, I compared Sean Burroughs (the guy that Pads fans and management hated because he was a 3b with no power) numbers (1600 PA’s) with Headley’s (1300 PA’s) and though it appears that Burroughs actually had more XB power, I had forgotten that he was a pitiful, unselective hacker who almost never drew a walk. Not to mention the fact that Headley is steadier with the glove.

fowl weather

Someone commented earlier on Twitter that the Padres are “lucky to be in first”. What ? They are on pace to win 93 fricken games, how is their first place position one of “luck” ?

They are lucky that

no other team in the NL West has capitalized on their recent slump.

Ludwick has to turn it on

He’s the impact bat and so far, he’s batted like most of our guys in the rotation.

Ludwick is "not" an impact bat

he is a solid bat but not an “impact” bat.

23 PA’s in though – he will prove to be the solid bat Pads thought he would.

Ludwick and Luke

were the goats of this game. And Richard, of course.

Gonzalez, Stauffer, Mujica, and Adams almost picked up the other guys. Close but no cigar.

that might've been the most exciting loss of the season

I was going crazy in the top of the 9th, and then it all ended so quickly. With the D-backs, you’ve gotta pull ahead at the end and your money. If you tie it, you might be in trouble.

Clayton had a scary outing, we wasted many opportunities…that was a very ugly game, which somehow made the brief comeback even more exciting.

Go Pads! !!!! This is the finest team of ballplayers I’ve ever cheered for. Have no worries. Our guys will persevere.

I thought this series would be a breeze.

Boy was I wrong.

I know

We’re lucky. The Giants have a really hard schedule coming up. I’m disappointed that we’ve dropped the first two against the Dbacks but I think if we can win today, win 2-3 against the Pirates and even take 1 or 2 against the Giants, we’ll be ok.

Thankfully the real savior is pitching today.

GO PADRES

Mat Latos is the real deal...Go Lakers, Pads, and Bolts
