Leach: Friars a force to be reckoned with | padres.com: News
The Padres have permitted 27 fewer runs than any other team in baseball, and with the additions of Ryan Ludwick and Miguel Tejada, they've improved their offense as well. Take them seriously, or disregard them at your own peril. -
Lilly tops Latos in L.A. victory - SignOnSanDiego.com
"This one was on me," said the losing pitcher. "I didn’t have my best stuff. I didn’t do a good job attacking hitters. I don’t feel I had my command. -
PADRES NOTES: Ludwick, Tejada fill out lineup, teammates say
"I've always just been comfortable in the five spot," Headley said. "I do enjoy being able to watch a pitcher work for an inning or so before I get to face him -- see what his stuff looks like or what he's trying to do. Other than that, there's no explanation other than it's a spot I've always liked hitting." -

"What he really did well was in and out," Black said. "That was the key."
Padres' surprises begin at home - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN
"The Padres still aren't setting the world on fire, and part of their relative success at home is a function of decreased production away from Petco Park"
Jed Hoyer’s trading style
"It's too early to make firm judgments about any of Hoyer's trades. However, in looking at his process, we can see that he has exhibited an attentiveness to his partners' needs, as well as creativity and flexibility."
It Might Be Dangerous... You Go First: Acquiring Tejada and Ludwick
"We, however, prefer to judge decisions in the time and under the circumstances in which they were made. Under that criteria, we're thrilled with the additions and look forward to watching this team down the stretch. "
Friars on Cardboard: Tuesday's Trevor: Keep The Faith
"I've said it before but I love that there are so many cards out there of Trevor just havin' a good time."
Padres freeze up in loss to Dodgers | padres.com: News
The Padres went 22 straight batters without a baserunner after scoring in the first inning on Tuesday, as a solid start by Mat Latos in a loss to the Dodgers.
Garland puts premium on durability | padres.com: News
Padres pitcher Jon Garland has been on the disabled list once since the 2000 season, which goes a long way in explaining why he has been in a position to win 10 or more games in each of the past nine seasons.

Gunning down Martin made up for it with me
It was one misplay that ended up being the difference in the game. It’s not like he’s Brady Clark out there. That play shouldn’t have been the one that made the difference in the game, scoring more than one run would have erased it.

Here's my problem....
Dude is 3 for his last 25. He had a nice run with the bat – but he’s come back down to earth. If we’re going to have a light-hitting guy in CF, I want it to be the guy that plays GREAT defense and has some speed.
I hear that, I do
but I think I’m too disgusted with everyone not making contact with gift pitches on top of the umpire going dolphin anus on Matos’ strikezone to be that upset with Norf or Bud.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔
Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
Agreed.
It probably would have been the right move by Bud to play TG2 last night. And I wish Deno would pick it up at the plate. But I don’t see those as being the real reason we lost last night. We lost because the ump was a jackturd and none of our hitters, except for Tejada, did squat against a pitcher who we should have been able to crush.
by theodore donald kerabatsos on Aug 4, 2010 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
I am sure it is just a perception thing
But it feels like we beat the tough pitchers and whenever I feel like we should ‘crush’ a guy we choke. For example, beating Josh Johnson twice this year. But I have no stat to back it up, and probably isn’t true, just feels like it.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman
I think that's because the ones you feel like you should have won stick with you longer.
When you lose to a great pitcher or beat a crappy pitcher, it’s no big deal. But when you lose to a crap pitcher or beat a great pitcher, those are the ones that you don’t forget.
I think our performances against Arizona, Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee have shown that we do a pretty good job of crushing the pitchers we should be crushing.
by theodore donald kerabatsos on Aug 4, 2010 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions
There's also something to be said
about playing all our games close, no matter the opponent. Against aces, playing them close is a good thing, while playing close with gas cans leaves you wondering why they’re not crushing him.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔
Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
Probably all right.
By remembering two against Josh Johnson (and Cliff Lee), but not being able to recall the name of a pitcher that we lost to that I thought we should easily beat. Just a perception not based on any fact.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman
I have a problem with your theory
What about the guys, like Lilly, that are somewhere in between “tough” and "crush"able?
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
A lot of teams have fits over guys like him
but I think it’s the perception that he “should” be mortal that ends up winning out when the guy just has a good day on the mound, and that makes it all the harder to understand.
Lilly’s usually hard on the Padres, but judging by the postgame comments from yesterday, he was in rare form. Sure, if we’re the Yankees we’d probably score more runs off of him, but sometimes it’s just the pitcher’s day.
Looking back at his game logs
He has not done bad against the Padres in his career. Only 2 losses.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman
Fair enough....
I guess the question is: Tonight, when we get the line-up…who do you want to see in CF?

One thing I can't wrap my head around
does Latos’ inning limit only include the regular season, or are they accounting for playoffs too?
TBD
I don't think there is a strict inning limit anymore.
I think they will try to limit his innings when they can but I don’t think he’ll actually be shut down for good at any point. I think it would be very hard not to pitch your ace in the playoffs. Even down the stretch, if we need a win, I don’t think resting Latos will be a possibility unless we’re playing the Dbacks.
Mat Latos is the real deal...Go Lakers, Pads, and Bolts
by mrbarneydangles on Aug 4, 2010 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions
They may limit Latos' innings more in September
when they can expand the rosters.
I can’t see him skipping a start until after he next pitches against Arizona and the Giants; maybe they then skip him and give Stauffer a start against the Cubs in Chicago or the Brewers in Milwaukee and then fire him back up to start the last homestand of August against the D-backs and close it against the Phillies.
If they were to do that, he’d have 4 starts remaining in August…. They could possibly go to a 6-man rotation in September, which would not only help Latos out, but also Leblanc and Richard. If Latos missed no more starts, he’d have 5 in September and one in the last series against the Giants (in SF) the first weekend of October….
If he averaged 6 innings in 10 starts, that would put him just over 180 for the regular season.
If he skipped one or two starts in September, then the 1st round of the playoffs would put him over the 180….
If we’re playing the NLCS and then possibly the Series, then I’m sorry, he just might have to get up to (and hopefully over!) 200 innings. — What, are you not going to give him the ball down the stretch and miss the playoffs because of it?… Doubtful…. What’re you not going to give him the ball in the play-offs?!… Even more doubtful, although if you advance past the 1st round, you sure don’t want to set it up so you’re going to pitch him 3 times in a 7-game series: that would not be wise, and that will NOT be happening.
I love the optimism
