A billion runs stand between the Padres and a win

So I was listening to Coach John Kentera on his post game show on XX 1090.  This guy Jay from Escondido is the first caller. Get this, he says the Padres are done.  It's all over according to Jay, he says the pitchers have tired out, the team has overachieved and the Padres will not win the NL West.  This is coming from a "Padres fan" mind you.

Foul Weather Fandom is alive and well in San Diego and Escondido for that matter. It's a disease and it is spreading.  What kind of cheap thrill do these fans get from taking 5 losses in a row and turning it into a doomsday scenario.  The Padres haven't lost 5 games in a row since July 2009. They ignore everything good that has happened this year and just focus on the being miserable people and trying to make everybody else miserable.  If you don't believe in the Padres at least have the decency to shut up and whatever you do don't call into talk radio shows.

About a week ago Bob Scanlan had something to say during Channel 4's Postgame that I thought was great.  I wish I would have written it down, because he's so eloquent and I don't want to misquote him.  Keep in mind this was a week ago when the Padres were in first place and had the best record in the National League, not like today -- actually we're still in first place with the best record in the NL.  Fans were feeling confident and asking Scanlan why ESPN and all the East Coast Media wasn't giving the Padres their proper respect.  Scanlan told them not to worry about the people on the East Coast who don't believe in the Padres, there are fans right here in San Diego that still don't believe in the Padres. He's right as usual.

Anyway if you missed it Miguel Tejada put the Padres in the lead early with a 2 run shot.  The Padres scoring stopped there, though they sure as hell were able to leave plenty base runners stranded.  Wade LeBlanc left everything over the plate and didn't pitch inside once. He got hammered.  He was pulled.  The game was pretty much over at that point, but not the season necessarily.

Go Padres!

you’ve got to be one crazy fool to be hating on these Pads. I’m with Ted Leitner- this is the most exciting Padres season that has ever happened, period. If you don’t believe in this team right now, you must be one jaded S.O.B. who hasn’t been following this team for the past few years. So now might be a good time to skip town, lock yourself in a closet, or just shut up for the next two months.

The Pads will pick themselves up. If any team can persevere, it’s these Pads.

will someone define "fair weather" fan

This is one of my main annoyances with this site. Apparently voicing concerns about the Padres is a “fair weather” type of thing? Everyone here, trolls excluded, want the Padres to win. But, unless you say, “We are going to kick ass no matter what”, you are fair-weather. Saying “Crap, we’re screwed for sure”, may be someone voicing their fears, not actually hoping for the Padres to fold. Not particularly insightful or useful, but still a view.

And, whichever position you take, it would be nice to drop in some data/analysis behind your opinion when appropriate, rather than a virtual back and forth without any insight.

I am personally very anxious about the upcoming stretch. We had a nice lead develop very quickly (~2 to 5-6), so it seems plausible it could go away just as quickly. The Rockies are a good team and have a history of late season charges. And the Giants are a solid team. I am holding my breath. We win as a cohesive team, and it needs each of the components firing: solid starting pitching, lights out relief, smart baserunning, situational hitting and of course, great D. When some of those components struggle, we look weak. Credit the coaches and players for maintaining these all season and expect them to pull it back together, but I expect it is going to be much tighter than we would like.

I love this year’s team and franchise and have been going through their ups and downs for since the 70s, so feel like my loyality to the team runs pretty deep.

by jayman66 on Aug 31, 2010 11:31 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I’ve got no problem with Fair Weather Fans. They ignore the Padres when they’re playing badly and jump on the bandwagon when they play well. The get excited when things get exciting.

I have a problem with Foul Weather Fans. They ignore everything positive that the Padres have done and instead wait for a rough patch and then criticize and the hell out of the team and tell everyone that you knew they were going to fail all season.

by jbox on Aug 31, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

but sometimes it seems like a complaint labels someone as foul weather

I often see posts where people gripe about something the Padres aren’t doing well, and, then, later, seeing people, often you, complaining about foul weather fans (thanks for the correction vs. “fair weather”).

predicting the padres demise from standpoint of “i told you so” is annoying. but fretting that suddenly some of the components that got us here are running out of a steam seems normal to me and part of healthy dialog about the team. i don’t see much distinction between the two. either you one is very positive (we’ll get them tomorrow!) or one is a foul weather fan. not seeing a ton in between. to me, and i may be in the minority, it stifles the conversation.

So critizing a pitcher isn't healthy dialogue?

Get with the program. You linked it but blew it out of proportion. I could not believe we were going to lose 5 in a row. Others agreed. (see the next comment).

What I don’t like is that: The idea that I cannot believe it looked like we were going to lose 5 in a row, and I think Wade is elevating his pitches = foul weather.

Its not, give me a break. I react the way I do because I love this team, not because I hate it. I mostly project positive vibes but we are in a slump, and it pisses me off which makes me negitive.

Hahaha, oh wow.

It’s not as blown out of proportion as it was to declare a loss in the 4th inning.

You really can’t believe the Padre could lose 5 games in a row? This makes me question how much baseball you’ve actually watched. After all, teams have losing streaks.

You were complaining that Wade doesn’t know how to pitch, which operates on the assumption that knowing equals being able to execute. This is a ridiculous misconception, and is not the same thing as saying that you think he’s elevating his pitches.

Nobody’s saying you’re not allowed to be upset, that’s the furthest thing from the truth. But you must consider your timing as well as be educated about what it is you’re actually upset about.

It isn't about Wade sucking

It’s about you being angry that you think Wade doesn’t know how to pitch, that he hasn’t learned something. That’s just irrational… and you can be upset about irrational things, but I reserve the right to mock you for it.

If you’re upset about Wade sucking, simply say so, and this doesn’t happen. Don’t imply that he hasn’t “learned” something simply because he isn’t executing. Frankly, it’s impossible for someone to get to the big leagues without knowing that elevated pitches are bad pitches to throw.

I’m going to guess at what you’re trying to say, and finish by telling you that it takes more than “learning” that elevated pitches are bad to be able to pitch. You obviously know this, how come you’re not pitching?

I’ll venture to guess it’s because you don’t have the ability to execute.

i can try to dig up more specific examples

It was a general observation, not specific to one night. It has been an ongoing trend. It was an honest question about what is a “foul weather fan”. If it is someone sounding negative about what is going on, well, I think commentors feel that way some of the time, and, in my opinion ought to feel free to post it without being harrassed.

jbox seemed to imply (in his response to me) that someone crosses over into FoulWF-dom when they go way over the top, only comment when the team is struggling, seem to relish the struggles and suggest that the struggles are a manifestation of something they had figured out before others, so a kind of “told you so” vibe.
I read the comments pretty regularly but am an intermittent poster (usually watch games online after the fact because of my schedule), but I have not seen too many or any posters that seem like they should be censured, which the FoulWF monicker seems to do.

Well you're saying you don't see the difference

and I’d like to know what you were looking at, because it seems pretty clear cut to me. It’s not as simple as “anyone fretting is foulweather” and that seemed to be your complaint. I think, generally of course, we’re very fair to anyone voicing legitimate concerns. It’s the negative rhetoric that we don’t enjoy, and that’s a detriment to conversation about the team, as opposed to an insightful contribution.

My two cents...

I can see where you’re coming from jayman. I understand your concerns. But I’ve also been in certain OT’s (especially from past seasons) where the negativity spirals out of control and it becomes depressing. We’re not baseball scouts, we fans. We’re posting in these OT’s to have fun. If it’s not fun, what’s the point? And believe me, there have been plenty of OT’s that I’ve just put my laptop away and watched the game without it because the OT had become not fun.

There are times when I’m watching the games (particularly during the latest streak) where I’m ready to pull my freaking hair out because of how much we suck and how stupid we’re playing. But I refrain from posting that stuff because it leads to a downward spiral of negativity.

We’re here because we’re fans. And in past seasons where we really did suck, it was perfectly acceptable to say that we suck. But this is as good as it gets around here, and the people who have been in OT’s that turn into a black hole of suck know how quickly the negativity can pile up. Trust me, we are all frustrated when LeBlanc is tossing meatballs over the plate. But if all decide to start posting crappy comments about how much he sucks, and the team sucks, and Bud sucks… etc. etc… it’ll get real depressing in hurry.

Everyone feels the frustration, but let’s all remember why we’re here: To be fans and to have fun.

(also, to flirt inappropriately with girls who may or may not be of age)

well said

I usually avoid GLB and OT’s when the Padres are sucking, which sounds like fair-weatherism, I guess, but it’s really so I don’t get crap for any contribution that isn’t positively delusional. (How many games in a row now have people incorrectly claimed ‘we will win tomrrow!’?) Also, I get insanely frustrated when the Padres fail, so not only do I not want to bring people down around here – like the ones who can’t deal with a negative comment in an OT – I don’t want to have my spirits artificially lifted by all the “ra-ra, everything is fine, anyone who doesn’t think so can SUCK IT” nonsense.

Every time “foul-weatherism” gets mentioned on GLB it depresses me to think that I’M LIKE THAT. I can’t help it if I think the Padres suck/are doomed after tough losses or a losing streak or yet another series loss to a competitive team not from the Bay Area. I think it’s bullsh*t that anyone who isn’t completely enamored with the Padres, 100% of the time, to an intoxicated extent, is considered less than a fan. As a fan, that hurts.
