I'd say

We already have a 89.74158% chance of winning said division.

And a 93.69621% chance at missing the playoffs.

It’d be a pretty big collapse for the Padres to miss the playoffs at this point. It is really, really hard to give up that kind of ground with less than 40 games to go.

The Giants need to sweep us twice.

Or, at most, win all but one of their games against us to have a chance.

Since I don’t see that happening, I’m not worried about settling for the wild card. We’re going to make the playoffs people.

Before the Sanchez prediction series

Adrian was on the radio saying that no matter how that series played out, there’s still plenty of work to do, and they still have to face them more in September.

That gave me a lot of confidence that the team is going to remain focused. While the vagiants got so emotionally worked up for that one series, the Padres remained cool and collected, as they have all season.

Yea, saw they weren't on the 40 man

How do the transactions work? Can the Padres easily switch players out of the 40 man?

Seems like the Padres farm system is lacking with guys that are ready to make an impact but we have those decent guys in S.A. that I would love to get some PT.

Mat Latos is the real deal...Go Lakers, Pads, and Bolts

by mrbarneydangles on Aug 24, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

It is NOT easy to "switch" guys on and off the 40 man roster

Otherwise, why would you both having the 40 man roster?

There are basically 4 ways to replace a person on the 40 man roster:
1. Put the player on the 60 day DL
2. Release the player
3. Designate the player for assignment. Each team gets a chance to claim the player, but if no one does then you can keep him in the farm system
4. Trade the player.

So, unless you can find 60 day DL candidates then you are basically losing farm system depth in order to add a player to the 40 man roster.

To the best of my knowledge, there isn’t anyone who could go on the 60 day DL that isn’t already on it. Maybe Tony Gwynn Jr., but they’ve been talking about him coming back at some point.

P.S. Chris Young is also someone who is not on the 40 man roster (he’s on the 60 day DL) who will need a roster spot if we want his help in September. (He will be eligible for the postseason roster even if we do wait until the roster expands to bring him back)

Carrillo and Garrison seem like likely candidates because they are both trying to return from injuries and are so far languishing. In Garrison’s case, it also looks like he’s a ways away from the majors.

by sdchicken on Aug 24, 2010 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Garrison would probably be at the top of the DFA list come September.

Plus, he’s the previous GM’s acquisition, not the current one’s.

I think they might have some ideas about making Carrillo a reliever, so he’ll probably stick around.

Liz and Perdomo will also get evaluated come the end of the month. It seems to me if they don’t think Liz is useful for the major league pen in September then they should let him go. Perdomo is more about if they think he’s made enough progress that they can use him in the pen next year. However, they may want to hold onto him until spring training and see if they can work out a minor trade following a good camp.

He's 25, but not really "old" for the league.

He was drafted out of college back in 2005 and is spending his first full season in Portland. He plays corner OF or 1B. While he does not hit a ton of HRs, he hits doubles, has a good idea of the strike zone, and has enough speed to steal a bag or two.

This is without watching him play, but his hitting profile reminds me a bit of Ryan Klesko in his prime: 20+ HR, 20+ doubles, good idea of the strike zone and 15-25 SB potential.

Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...

I wouldn't say he's tearing it up

But, he’s doing a mighty fine job for Portland this year. He’s a little like Venable, but with less speed (and SB ability), slightly worse defense, no capability of being an emergency CF, but can play some 1B and a little 3B in a pinch.

I love this....
Assistant general manager Bobby Evans confirmed the Giants claimed Ross in part so the Padres couldn’t get him, also realizing Ross could become a Giant.

I love that they admit it.

The only way this could be better is if Hoyer came out and said that the Padres had zero interest in Ross.

"Don't have much interest..."

I want to hear Jed say “We had no plans to claim Cody Ross. None.”

and then add

“because his official picture is ridiculous. he looks like a buffoon. see?”

and show this:

“our team is filled with beauty. we don’t want this guy. it would give us bad beauty kharma”

Hee!

Following one of the games we played against them, every time that picture came up I found myself trying to get my face in that exact same expression. Not the best photo!

That's the beauty I'm talking about.

Tagg Bozied

At the Flying Squirrels game right now watching them play the Reading Phillies. Bozied just ripped a pitch over the left field wall into the parking lot. 31 and playing Double AA ball. A knee injury can ruin everything.

"Tagg Bozied"

I thought this was a new term for being drunk.

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

"Remember that one time

I made a mental note that night

to periodically find ways to bring it up so that no one forgets.

I need new pants.

Did Wonko keep telling them that they were kissing wrong?

and that Boilermakers three-way mouth kiss better?

Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
