San Diego Padres Fan Confidence Poll: 8/2/2010

So here we are in August still in first place, leading the Giants by 1.5 games in the NL West.  This past week the Padres went 4-3 finishing the sweep against the Pirates, taking two from the Dodgers and losing the series to the Marlins.   The Pads finished July with a 14-10.  In August they're a perfect 1-0.

The big news this week was obviously the trades.  GM Jed Hoyer and company acquired Miguel Tejada and Ryan Ludwick.  The message from the Padres was clear, they are good at trolling for beefy men, luring them away from their homes with the promise of fame and fortune and then putting them to work in the park.

It seems that fans are finally starting to take notice because Petco Park was packed this week pulling some of the best attendance numbers of the year.

Feeling pretty confident, eh?  Well let's see just how confident, vote in this poll.

The rules are simple. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no confidence at all, 10 being absolute confidence, How confident are you in the San Diego Padres organization?

"Confidence" is just about anything you want to interpret it as. The front office, the future prospects, the play on the field, the park, etc etc etc

Poll
On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being "not confident at all" and 10 being "absolute confidence": How confident are you in the San Diego Padres?

Very close to a 10. Not sure if they will hold on to win the division, but I like the way the team is playing and the way the FO is running the team.

Same

I was already a 9 and my confidence went up, but I’m not ready for a 10. I need a clearer picture of the Padres in 2012 and beyond to go there (read: Adrian situation).

I think i’ll bump it up to a 10 if the Pads go 7-0, 6-1, or 5-2 on this road trip.

for the first time all season, i really think the Padres can win this division

A lot of that comes from Jed Hoyer. I cannot believe he was able to convince a contending team to part with a talented power hitter while giving up quite little in return. In my opinion, no other team in MLB better balanced addressing their needs with limiting the export of talent than the Padres. I have them an A in my post-deadline evaluation at www.Purplerow.com. The Rockies got a B, D-Backs C-, Giants D, Dodgers F. Fair?

not sure

how the Dbacks didn’t get a --FFFFF. May be one of the worst trading season ever.

They were slashing payroll - that was the whole point and that was achieved

But, they didn't even do a good job at that

If you want to trade Haren and slash payroll, then you don’t take back a mediocre pitcher (Saunders) who makes half as much. You get prospects that make chump change and work on your future.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

That's just wrong though.

Haren is due about $35mil on the life of his deal. They owe Saunders less than $2mil the rest of the way. That’s pretty significant

I said previously that I would probably be an 8 all season unless something drastic happened… but these two trades have pushed me into 9 territory, at least for this week. How can I not be more confident after two very good trades that should improve our team considerably without sacrificing too much in future talent?

Very, very happy with what’s happening.

Best season ever! Even if the Padres somehow falter in the home stretch, it won’t be for lack of trying. The two acquisitions were final proof to me that the organization is in good hands and that we have a bright future.

I’ve been moving between 7 and 8 all season based mostly on the level of play from the team. I was cautiously optimistic in regards to the new FO, but my unfamiliarity with them kept my confidence in the organization from going higher than that.

I was ready to move to a solid 8 on the season as long as Hoyer didn’t give up too much to acquire some help for the final two months of the season. The rumored high costs of mid-level rental players made me think that no moves being made would reflect well on Hoyer as a GM.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the team would acquire a player like Ludwick, and for such a relatively cheap cost. That says a lot to me about Hoyers ability, as well as how favorably the Padres farm system, though far from great, is viewed by other teams in the league.

Like Wonko, I am not ready to give the organization a 10, but at a 9 I am seriously considering purchasing season tickets for the first time ever. So I think that’s a win as far as the FO is concerned.

10.1 for now

could move up to a 10.2 is they take the series against the Dodgers

Can’t get to 10, which for me is certainty, until the magic number falls to 0. But until then, it’s going to need to take a major calamity for me to lose confidence.

Better than last time’s 7. The trades are obviously the reason why. We’re now good enough on paper to get to the NLCS. What remains to be seen is if we don’t screw it up.

9... would someone care to explain their "5" or "6"?

The moves last week make us better this year and next.
We are the best team in the NL west, and have a legitimate claim at being the best in the NL.

The same goes for next year when Latos will be a true CY young candidate and (hopefully) Richard will be a solid #2-3 pitcher. And our bullpen… only looks better and better.

by Zen Blade on Aug 2, 2010 5:17 PM PDT reply actions

I'll explain my 7

Feelin pretty good, v happy with the moves, but scared of Gigantes a bit at the moment, and most of all, don’t want to mozz it (if it aint broke don’t fix it!).

They aren't playing like

the team that we womped on at the beginning of the year. A lot like us their starting pitching has faltered a bit but the hitting has picked up. If you can get the starter taken out before the 7th then you will score runs as they seem to have absolutely no middle relief. (though they did just trade for two lefty setup men)

by AYEq on Aug 3, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

since the parameters for "confidence" are pretty subjective

I tend to vote on how confident I am that the Padres will win their next game. It’s probably because I’m pessimistic that my confidence is only at a 6. So when the Padres lose or are losing, I’m not surprised, but when they win, I’m surprised.

Also, the less confident and excited I get, the less I assume it will hurt if the Padres totally blow it this year.

Including today. I would have gone up to 8 had we kept our 3.5 game lead on the Giants.

Down from 9 last week. Didn’t look so hot against the Marlins nor the Braves, but still looking good.

by AYEq on Aug 2, 2010 8:22 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, they struggled a bit but it's pretty hard to be as consistent as they have ALL year

I really like what they’re doing in Chavez Ravine so far. Holding the Dodgers to 5 and then 2 is pretty good. Plus, we’re obviously swinging the bat again.

I’m a notch below J. Holmes but will also bump up 1 if we go at least 5 and 2 on this current road-trip.

That’d be my first foray to Niner-niner (although I’ve been an 8.5 rounded down one other time)…. How, you say, could I not be as high as that after the trades? — That the starting pitching has been pretty consistently dropping off a bit for a number of weeks now would be the main reason.

Frieri has been amazing, counteracting Webb’s fading a bit (and Adams being on the DL); and Mujica had been righting his ship until he gave up his 11TH gopher ball tonight. And right now I have more confidence in Gregerson and Frieri than in Heath.

Still friggin’ awesome game tonight — and, obviously, season!
