First-time San Diego/PETCO visitor
Hey all, long-time weary Royals fan vising from RoyalsReview here.
I'll be out that way the end of this month and am hoping to catch a game at PETCO and cheer on Royals legend Matt Stairs. It'll either be the evening game on Wednesday 8/25 or the afternoon game on Thursday 8/26. Would really appreciate some feedback on the following:
- Any recommendations for one of the above games over the other?
- Where do you recommend trying to get seats? Not looking to break the bank but don't know when I'll be back out that way so fine spending a little extra for something good.
- Is PETCO near any of the sights/nightlife? Any particular hotel locations you recommend nearby?
Thanks in advance. Although I can't repay you directly, take comfort in the fact that the Royals will likely roll over for you in any future interleague series.

Welcome
If I were you, I’d do the following:
1. Stay at the Comfort Inn Gaslamp. It’s cheap and in a perfect location.
2. Get tickets for the Thursday game. Just buy through the team.
3. Get lunch at BASIC, then pregame at Proper.
4. Go to the game. It’s a 3:35 start “Throwback Thursday” where the team wears cool vintage jerseys and the ballpark has organ music and stuff.
5. Get dinner at Neighborhood.
6. Drink heavily at any other fine establishment in the Gaslamp.
7. Sleep

BASIC pizza is soooo freakin good
90 feet from BASIC is this place called The Corner. They serve gourmet burgers so they are more pricey but really good.
But yeah, the Gaslamp district is right next to the ballpark. Plenty of nightlife there.

The Gaslamp area right around the ballpark is fairly snazzy and has lots of restaurants and bars to visit. If you’re not stuck on foot (or if you’re a hardy walker), Balboa Park just north of downtown has the Zoo and gobs of sweet museums.
I wager you have about a 25% chance in any given game of seeing a Stairs PH appearance. And about a 75% chance of seeing him strike out in that AB.
Also, I would go for the day game Thursday. Night games tend to be on the cool and chilly side but if the sun is out Thursday it will be absolutely gorgeous and the awesome throwback unis will be on display.
definitely
bring a jacket, sweater or both.
Lots of people buy tickets on stubhub – I’ve had good luck with scalpers outside the stadium. Make sure you have a stadium map to get in a good section.
Also, I think some of the beer is 3.2 – not sure which – but you should avoid that.

and here‘s the feedback I got (bonus: the undoubtedly greatest unicorn pic in history). Also worth a read is Mr. box’s classic A Cheapskate’s Guide to a Padres Game.

If you're mobile...
take a trip down to historic Old Town, especially if you get into town on Tuesday,
Destination: Old Town Mexican Cafe —$2 tacos, $2.50 Margaritas, $2.50 Tequila Shots, $2.50 Tecates*Dine In Only*. Their corn and flour tortillas you can watch being handmade through the glass windows on the street. I am a fan of their Carne Asada dinner which comes with rice and beans, and your choice of the before mentioned fresh corn or flour tortillas. I recommend the 1 800 Cadillac Margarita, described as exceptional richness and smoothness: contains:1 800 Reposado Tequila and Grand Marnier. What also seals the deal is that it is open from 7am-2am Daily!

Nah...
I just pictured myself coming from KC, and not experiencing Mexican food, it is almost as bad as throwing home runs back onto the field.

Off topic, but are you another GLBer's brother?
I remember somebody commenting on FoC about how his brother became an Astros fan when we traded Plantier. I think it was Ax but I wouldn’t swear to it.

Hey, at least I got the right trade.
Poor guy missed out on Cammy and Fins altogether (unless you count when Ken went back to Houston in ’99 & 2000 but I imagine that was pretty depressing).

proud season ticket partner with my bro, i’ll follow the off-topic trend, met ‘justdave’ on Sunday, also spotted Pad Squad Andre at the gauntlet for the All-You-Can-Eat section.

Stay at the Omni
Sit in the Omni Club seats. Mmmmm.

Look into the $61 seats
If you get the right seats in the $61 section, you can put yourself right next to a team dugout. Like RIGHT next to a team dugout. No kidding.
Oh also
If it makes a difference to you, Thursday will be a Throwback Thursday. So more old timey time from back yonder in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Padres wear one of their old school uniforms and they play organ music.
Recently there
I was at Petco for the FLA game last Friday. We sat in the Field reserve section towards the back on the 3rd base side. Seats were ok but we walked around to the Left Lower Box Section and I thought those seats were great. We stood in the back and felt more into the game. Better view to judge balls and strikes
The best value seats IMO are in sections 300-302
your in the top level, but you can see the whole feild and you look right over the plate so you can see if it’s a strike and you can also watch the break of the ball.

That's my feeling as well
Although I had a lot of fun in Section 120 down in the sun on Sunday.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

a little farther in
113 – 119 are my fave
unless someone snags me tickets behind home.
"I post like canned meat."
when I'm not working the pressbox
I get occasional tickets from a family friend with season tix right at the front of section G (the preview pic on the interactive chart on the official site is like three rows behind the seat)
totally awesome, but they’re the most expensive kind…can’t imagine dropping 3K a year on seats
Those seats only work on that side of the field (1st bast/right field line)
So, sections 118,116,114 can be annoying because you either can’t see the scoreboard or you’re constantly moving your head back and forth until it unscrews all the way off. I also have issues with the angling of the seats. They are fine if you want to stare at CF all day, but if you want to watch the action on the mound and at the plate then in can be uncomfortable for your neck, back, hips, etc. On my creakier days I’ve come away from those seats pretty sore.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
100% agree
There are better seats and worse seats. But for bang for the buck, these are where its at.
These seats are good, but...
I’d still recommend sections 108 or 109. Right where either section comes alongside the team dugout. Or sections 101/102 are tickets that you’d normally expect to pay $20 more for in KC and you’re behind home plate.
Gotta remember that Rowyal’s here to mostly check out the park and have a good team. Ain’t no Royals fan gonna be caught up in the intricacies of Padres vs Pirates baseball (no offense). If you’re on a budget, then yeah, 300-302, but for a vacay, only-gonna-be-at-petco-once, don’t-really-care-who-wins… 108 or 109 as close to the field as you can get.

I enjoy sections 131-135
Always loud and crowded over there.

Can you still get 2-for-1's for both those games?
I’m going to both games and got those 2-for-1’s; you’re in RF quite a ways away, but for what amounts to $8.50 a ticket, it’s a great deal….
If you can get it, why not do that for one of those games, sell the extra (if you’re by yourself), and splurge on the other one?!!
If you have the time, do the ballpark tour, then buy your tickets after at the boxoffice.
You can use your new knowledge of the place to make an informed decision. But if you have to choose sight-unseen, follow Dex’s suggestion of 108 or 109 if money is no object but if you want GREAT bang for your buck, get front row, top deck. You are looking right down on the field. Section 312 looks right down on third base, 311 looks down on first base, the smaller the number the closer to home plate you are. The Padres web site has screen shots of the view from each section, by the way.
And stay in Old Town and take the trolly to the ball park. The Holiday Inn Express Old Town is reasonably priced and just a few blocks from the Old Town Transit Center, and you have breakfast covered, but there are a several good hotel options over there. You can hang out at any of the gazillion places around Old Town or around the Gaslamp District next to the ballpark for hours and hours of entertainment. Google both areas for ideas where.
And if you go to the Wednesday game, I’ll be in 311, row 1 seat 16. Come on by and say Hi. Hope you enjoy our fair city.
