Padres complete 4 game sweep of Cubs
The Padres broke the game wide open in the seventh inning when they scored 4 runs. The best play of the game was when Will Venable caught the Cubs napping and seized the opportunity to charge home after Chase Headley was caught in a run down between third and home.
Venable and Glenn Hoffman noticed that with the Cubs catcher tagging out Headley, Berg the pitcher left home plate and returned to the mound. With the catcher's back turned Venable sprinted home beating the throw to the plate. It's hard to explain, so just watch the play here.
I thought for sure that Headley was going to be called for some type of interference because on his way back to the dugout he walked across the middle of the infield and blocked the pitcher's approach to home.
Now keep in mind that I didn't actually get to watch the game, but presumably Mat Latos had another great outing and continued to dominate. He struck out a career high 10 batters, making him 13-5 on the year.
Anyway the Padres won and opened a nice healthy 6.5 game lead in the NL West.
Love this team. Go Padres!

Gerut is in his early thirties. Not exactly over the hill. I think that is a good pick-up. He has more pop in his bat than Jr. and some decent speed. Another left handed bat. I am not sure how he fits into the 40 man roster situation, or who will eventually take Tgjr’s spot should we (we will) make the playoffs but I lked Gerut and wondered why we traded for Gwynn to begin with.
Gerut's salary was about 3x more than Gwynn's
And like you said, Gerut is in his early 30s while Gwynn is not. And the obvious PR with having Gwynn on the roster helped

Tremendous game, tremendous play.
I said it already on teh f-books and while gloating to my friend Shane but I’ll repeat it for those of you not fortunate enough to already be graced by my wisdom and insight: That play, for me, perfectly summed up both teams this season. We play heads-up ball and exploit every weakness where as the Cubs could not care less about anything. None of them. Their minds aren’t in it and their hearts aren’t in it. The only guy who even had a smidgen of passion left just got jettisoned to Atlanta. I am reveling in it.

Right when I heard Tony was going on DL
I thought to myself, is there anyway we could trade for Marlon Byrd to play center. He has pretty good wheels, a nice glove, and can hit pretty well. But it’s just a pipe dream. But you never know after the Cubs have been trading away all these guys. I am sure Jed doesn’t want his salary, though, even if it were possible.
That'd be a huge pick-up
Don’t know if Byrd has already cleared or would clear waivers.

We should try more tricks
Like the rozin bag trick…I am constantly thinking about that. Could it work?
If so, we need to use that for an out in a huge game with like the bases loaded and 2 out, up 1, top 9th with Jeter up in the World Series, Game 7. We can only use it once, because then teams will have caught on.
Then every one will say how lucky, annoying, and scrappy we are. And I will laugh, because we are World Series champs!

I wonder what the rest of the nation thinks of our young players....
Do other people think of Venable as a stud? Kind of like the Rays guys a couple years ago…one season can catapult marginal players into stars.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
Wait, are we talking about the rest of the nation of Enberg here?

Both, since I think I saw an AP article refer to him as Max
Maybe he’ll be called Molly in the future…
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
Will Venable IS a stud
When Tommy Lasorda was on the 1090 morning show a week or two back, he specifically called out Will Venable as a talent. Then he mentioned the spring training home run that jbox and I gushed over where Will hit a ball that bounced off the top of the batters eye in centerfield.
Will Venable is my favorite. Any day now for that cycle.
No doubt that Will is a stud
I’m just curious about perception. To a Cinci fan, is LeBlanc a great 5th pitcher? To an M’s fan, is Hundley a great guy to have behind the dish? We live and die with each game and have early menstral cycles when they have a bad few days. The rest of the country is probably starting to look at us as a dangerous group of sub 30 y/o ballplayers that haven’t put it all together yet, but are a real talented group of guys.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
Will Venable is the MVP
Molly Venable’s Prodigy
One day, he could wrestle that award from Gonzilla if he can materialize all of his talent.
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
I think Wonko may have tweeted this the other day...
But look at current MVP candidate Carlos Gonzalez… the guy is Will Venable + Coors Field. Look at the road numbers for CarGo and Will… very, very similar. They’re built exactly the same. Both are speedy outfielders, both hit/throw lefty, both good basestealers. I’m convinced that the only difference is that Venable plays in PETCO and CarGo plays in Coors. That’s why I can’t believe that he could actually win an MVP.

It's a great point whoever made it.
It’s going to be hilarious if/when a team that isn’t Colorado gives him a giant contract and then realizes that they just paid a huge sum of money for Will Venable.

I agree, the two are similar....
My favorite image of Veneble is when he scoops a ball low and in, looking like he’s golfing with a 15inch wood. His left knee pretty much resting on the ground while he hits the ball 400 ft.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
Okay, is it too much to hope for Jonathan "The Whiner" SanCHEZ to get bombed?

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/aug/19/gwynn-dl-padres-try-sweep-cubs/
geez, all the comments are so depressing. some people nitpick like a mother. people still don’t believe that the padres are the real deal. like dude, we won, go f*ck yourself.
"i kinda feel like nevin and klesko were some fling we (the padres) had in the past and now realize were a bad idea and are embarrassed about."
the UT article
so… I guess Bill Center wasn’t actually watching the game…
Venable broke for the plate and scored before pitcher Justin Berg could get there for Hill’s throw.

even so
Venable didn’t score “before [Nady] could get there”… he scored before Nady could get the throw and slap on the tag.
I guess I’m just ticked because I’ve watched that replay probably a dozen times and Center’s description completely denies the rush of a daring, close play.

They placed Gwynn on the 15 day Dl.
if he is out for the rest of the season. Is there a good reason to not use the 60 DL and clear a roster spot?
I think they might be headed that way
but it looks like they’re going to get a second opinion and make sure he’s out for the season first.
