Padres defeat Cubs 5-1, light switch goes off in America's head that this team is for real
At a certain point, we've gotta be in the heads of the teams that we play, right? I can totally understand some people - fairweather fans, foulweather fans, local media, national media, fans of other teams - who still don't take the Padres seriously because none of our boys have been on late night talk or TMZ or the Today Show. Nobody's been an MVP (except for our old version of Miguel Tejada) or a Cy Young Award winner.
If you're an actual player on an opposing team though, you had to have noticed the Padres well before now, right?
Oh that team that's had the best record in the National League forever is still there. We play them next week. I'm thinking we take that series super easy. From what I can tell they don't score runs, but we score runs all the time. We'll score on them.
Do other teams still think that way? At a point, I'm sure they did, but I can't imagine they do now (except for the Giants). I also imagine that the Giants looking past the Padres to the level that they did woke up some of the cockier members of opposing teams.
Still, for the most part, you can't be a member of a front office in a down economy and not notice what the Padres have done this season. It would be stupid to ignore and fans, media, players can afford to be stupid, but can whole teams be stupid? Heck I dunno.

No-Names & Work Ethic
One (of many) thing(s) I like about this year’s team is the (apparent) lack of ego. No “big-name” high-salaried superstars. This team is a TEAM and their TEAM work (selflessness & work ethic) is something I admire. Cubs spend $100 million more and have less to show for it.
I wonder if there isn’t some principle at work here — once you spend big bucks and attract the big stars (and the attention) you get attitude. Mets, Dodgers, Yankees … no thanks. I like our TEAM. These are guys you can count on to work hard for the money, not rest on their laurels and endorsements. GO Padres! No matter the outcome of this season, I’ll be very proud to have watched these guys in action this year. They make me even prouder to be a Padres fan.

Some ESPN Clown Wrote
That scouts around the league are saying the Padres are the anti-dote to Moneyball, which has ruined baseball for purists with the emphasis on walks and old slow power hitters. Don’t remember which clown, but I agree. I really like watching these guys play.

They are the most ego-less team I can remember in a pennant race.”"

I kinda thought the FO's approach was fairly "moneyball"
They found an undervalued attribute and financially exploit it. The Padres picked speedy defenders and pitchers who put balls in play. Those players are easier to find than hitters who have high AVG/OBP/SLG or pitchers with high K rates.
I’ve never read moneyball, but I gathered that the entire idea was not to name a new category of players but to have front offices seek out undervalued player attributes. :-/

I thought it was the Alderson approach of everybody walk ever at bat and wait for the 3 run homer. But my steaks are ready so I may not be thinking clearly…
Over the hill? What hill? I don't remember any hill...
Forget Alderson.
The fact of the matter is the best way to score runs is to get on base and hit for power. It didn’t work so well for us in the mid-2000s because Petco sapped the power of guys like Klesko and Nevin. Plus they were old and on the downward slope of their careers.

The point in Moneyball
Was that a small market team (like the As in that case) couldn’t afford to pay for talent at market rates and therefore had to find other ways to win. They had to find undervalued assets that they could get on the cheap. In their case it was big overweight-looking guys who traditionalists and scouts thought couldn’t play, but in fact were pretty good at baseball.

Run prevention and defense has been an inefficiency the last few years
Although teams besides the Padres have been exploiting that.
I don’t think pitchers who pitch to contact are a market inefficiency. Our most successful pitcher, Latos, succeeds because he gets a lot of Ks and doesn’t walk many. Richard and Garland are having better success because they’re posting career high strikeout rates, among other things. The entire bullpen is succeeding because they have mammoth strikeout rates. Most of our pitchers were acquired via the old market inefficiency of the draft and trades.

Post steroids, the game has skewed toward
Speed, defense, pitching and base hits. The Padres recognized this – partially because of Petco – and voila’

The light has been on in America's head for awhile.
I know guys living just outside of Boston and in Cleveland, and they and their friends know about the Padres. They wonder why they’re not seeing them on TV, and why nobody writes about them. Even IN Boston, the sports shows limit their coverage of the Padres to, “Okay they’ve been winning a few games, so we’ll have to wait a little longer before we can get Adrian for two bat boys and a bag of fungo balls”. It’s not the fans, but the national press that needs a switch in their heads turned on.
I’d let Jon Morosi live, for now. He put it in black and white :“I was wrong”, and warned others not to make the same mistake. It couldn’t have been just Padres fans who got to him, he must have gotten some REAL flack over that article from other teams’ fans like the ones I know. The Mainly Stupid Media controls print and national TV, but the fans have online resources, like GLB.

what wrong with San Diegans?
I moved to SD about 2 years ago… I love baseball.. I grew up in Chicago.. lived in Boston.. now a San Diegan. I bought season tickets my second year living in this city. These Padres are good… why can’t we sell out a game? The team has done their job.. San Diego has to do their’s. If we don’t sell out these games, ESPECIALLY NOW, for certain next year they are going to sell every single one of their good players… and San Diego will be back to where they were a couple of years ago.
COME ON SAN DIEGO.. ROOT FOR THE PADRES! COME TO THE GAMES! DO YOUR PART!!

Dude, don't even start.
Gaslamp Ball Game OT: "Makes you happy in the pants"
"Even Jedis don't stand a chance against our bullpen."
People are coming around slowly
but a lot of them are wary because of the Moores divorce and how Peavy and Trevor were dealt. In a way, even the Chargers consistently choking in the playoffs is hurting the Padres because this is a bad sports town and when casual fans (i.e. the ones who are the difference between 50-60% attendance and sellouts) see one team that is expected to win continually fail to do so, it causes apathy. “The Chargers are one of the best teams in the league and they still can’t win — the Padres are letting all their stars go so how could they possibly succeed?”
When the September homestands roll around with opportunities for clinching and so on, the attendance should definitely pick up. But it’s a disappointment how meager the numbers have been, and we all wish it was different.
This message would be better served in the newspaper, not in the comments section of an Internet blog that is comprised of people who watch and discuss Padres games together. And delete that sentence that starts with “If” and ends with “ago.”
