Giants manage to beat the Padres, everyone kinda surprised

"Wake up, Andres! Andres, wake up! Me and Magic Flying Ball want you to wake uuuuupppp!" (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

Well, the Giants managed to pull to within 2 1/2 games of the Padres with their extra innings win today. Mat Latos pitched well, but the bullpen oddly couldn't hold the 2 run lead, and just as weird, the Padres put together base runners late in the game, but couldn't get runs across. I blame Jonathan Sanchez.

We can still take the series tomorrow and keep the Giants at bay, but it's always a bummer to drop a winnable game.

GO PADRES!!!

…and now you know how Giants fans feel after seemingly 90% of games against the Padres.

Seriously, it’s insane how many close games these two teams seem to play.

I have a feeling tomorrow is a MWG

As for today, we should have won, but at least we lost a game where we played like crap and not one where we definitely deserved a win.

Tough loss

Can’t win them all. Tomorrow would be a huge W but can’t be mad losing in extras, it just hurts that the bulpen let us down after a great outing by Latos.

Oh, unless you actually thought Stauffer was going to continue to post a 0.13 ERA with pedestrian stuff, Gregerson was going to continue to allow one baserunner every 4 appearances, and Chris Denforia (who?) was going to keep hitting bombs every other game.

2010 Padres = winning Powerball 3 times in one year

by patneededthetowel on Aug 14, 2010 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

Jeez, dude

How does it make you feel coming over here and pouring salt in our wounds and sugar in our gas tanks? Was it your plan to instigate an argument?

I’ll take 3 winning powerball tickets in one year, but that doesn’t make the Giants any better than the Padres.

trolls don't speak for the whole of Giants fandom...

I think the general consensus from our neck of the woods is 1) The Padres really are good this year, it’s not some kind of extreme luck/illusion, but 2) they’ve also been insanely lucky to win as many games against the Giants as they have this year. SF has just been terrible with RISP against the Padres, and some of that can be chalked up to San Diego’s great pitching/defense, but another big chunk of it is almost certainly luck.

by Smoke on the Water on Aug 14, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

That's just the game

Obviously, the Giants have had their fair share of luck this year as well, amassing 67 wins and 51 losses. Both teams are playing well and there are seven games left in the season series. May the best team win the division and I think we all know that won’t be the Dodgers.

It’s something called BABIP.

by DrDC on Aug 14, 2010 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

And your second best excuse is BABIP?

Some hitters hit the ball harder than others. Some pitchers Induce more soft grounders than others, etc. etc. BABIP is a terrible stat to base an argument off of. Maybe your offense doesn’t do well against the Padres pitching because 1) Our pitching is good, or 2) Aubrey Huff leads your team in nearly every offensive statistic. Sounds like a real powerhouse offense to me.

by Dubsco on Aug 14, 2010 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Obviously you don’t understand baseball very well.

Also interesting how you criticize Huff when he’s having a better season than Adrian Gonzalez. Funny how that works.

Padres BABIP: .294

I’m talking about the Padres vs. the Giants head-to-head, not on the season as whole.

I don’t what it is now, but after the last series I’m pretty sure the Giants were around .240 and the Padres were above .300. That’s all I was saying.

Regardless, congrats on the series win. I still think our team is good enough to win the division but we’re going to need to play really well and will more likely have to get in via the WC. Good luck until we meet again.

by DrDC on Aug 15, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

That's easy

Padres have the best defense. Your fielders and baserunners are old, fat, and slow.

Especially considering the Giants are 3rd in UZR and 9th in DRS.

Padres are first in UZR

and have roughly twice as many steals, with 2nd-most in NL, while the Giants have the 2nd least.

I don’t see what that has to do with our fielders being fat and slow apparently. Whatever floats your boat dude, it’s tough to argue with someone like yourself who is coming off as extremely ignorant. I suppose expecting a reasonable and thoughtful friendly debate would be possible, but not with you it seems.

Regardless, best of luck, till we meet again.

by DrDC on Aug 15, 2010 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn't you know?

Your fielders are also your baserunners. They’re fat and slow. This is just a fact.

I’m ignorant? Please. I’ve replied to your your sarcastic and rude opinions with nothing but facts, while you can only attempt to insult, as opposed to actually say anything of substance. You’re not thoughtful, and you’re certainly not friendly, so your expectations to be treated as such are misguided and extremely humorous.

Good day, sir.

I'll stop there

This isn’t what I wanted to do. It’s simply the frustration of this past weekend. I don’t think your team is a true talent 37-2 against or us or w/e the number is, but it’s obvious you’ve definitely outplayed us. You’ve definitely been a bit lucky, but in no way has that luck amounted to more than one more win.

I didn’t want to get into an e-fight because, well, it’s pointless. Good luck.

You do realize that Huff has been a slightly better offensive player than Adrian Gonzales this year right? ( http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=6&season=2010&month=0 )

Also, it is really bush league to make smarmy comments hoping a player gets injured.

Disappointing game

but not soul-crushing.
We go up against “the Freak” tomorrow, and i’m not as frightened about him: he’s been knocked around this year, and we’ve beaten great pitching before (Josh Johnson, Adam Wainwright, Cole Hamels, Chad Billingsgly, to name a few) when we needed to. Plus, we’ve established that San Fran won’t take over 1st place this weekend, much to the dismay of Nostradamus.

Go Padres!

That smack talk will always come back to bite one on the ass, and it makes Sanchez look like an idiot (which he may be).
