Padres beat Giants' Sanchez for third time; take 3.5 game lead

That was a crasy game.  Padres were caught in run downs three times. Jerry Hairston Jr. was involved in two of them.  Clayton Richard was sketchy early on, bouncing pitches and balls to third base. Then the strangest play was Scott Hairston being called out for interfering with the second basemen on a ball deflected off the pitcher.  Bud Black argued for about 10 minutes and decided to officially protest the game.

I'm listening to the XX 1090 Postgame Show and Coach Kentera is saying that the Umpire Case Book says that if a ball is deflected off the pitcher and the base runner interferes with the infielder then the runner is out.  So the protest would likely have been denied.

Turns out it didn't matter since the Padres were able to score the deciding run in the 6th inning on a great slide by Ryan LudwickHeath Bell saved the game and proved once and for all that Jonathan Sanchez is a sh_tty psychic.

Good win.  I'm off to St. Louis and Chicago tomorrow morning.  Catch you on the flip side.

Good God Damn

But Giants fans are pissed. I can understand why. But I seriously take issue with their constant whining about how lucky we are. We are lucky, but we are good also. Our centerfielder didn’t fall flat on his ass playing a double into a triple. Our third baseman didn’t birch a rundown allowing the go ahead run to get to third. You made those mistakes. We didn’t. That’s why we won. Deal with it.

But I’d much rather be lucky and good… than be a little bitchass like Jonathan Sanchez.

I think this article was linked on GLB a few weeks back... and I've had four beers...

but I’ll try my best to summarize here:

If you took 30 teams of exact equal abilities, in the same exact conditions, with all factors being exactly equal, and ran a simulation of those teams playing each other over a 162 game season, you’d end up with most teams around .500… but some teams will win or lose lose up to 12 games above or below .500. Meaning that LUCK plays a big part of baseball just due to the nature of the game.

So, yeah, luck plays a big part in baseball. But it’s equally likely to strike good teams as it is bad teams. So, bitching about luck is like bitching about airplane peanuts and rush hour traffic. It’s tired; it’s pointless; and it’s unoriginal.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Aug 13, 2010 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions

In a head to head matchup

where both sides have exact equal abilities, in the same exact conditions, with all factors being exactly equal. The outcome over a 10 game stretch should be 5-5 or near there. 8-1 seems like there is something else working there besides luck. I suspect talent.

by soulSD on Aug 13, 2010 11:51 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

here's my problem with this:

Luck is not the only “intangible.” Certain unmeasurable aspects of the game such as hustle, concentration, and execution can be factors of a good coaching staff and clubhouse atmosphere (or chemistry) and can affect more game outcomes than the six that were affected by luck.

Some games are won by luck. Tonight’s game was won by superior execution.

I have more to say about this, but most of it doesn’t make much sense, so I’m going to bed.

by sdchicken on Aug 14, 2010 12:20 AM PDT reply actions

yeah the MCC crew is annoying

I get being pissed, but they are a bit blind to their own team’s luck. The BP adjusted standings have them 5.0 games over their adjusted standings. The adjusted standings have three adjustments:

1. adjustments for being above or below pythagorean standings
2. take a team’s batting and pitching lines and compare what they should have scored or allowed vs. actual
3. adjusting for quality of opponents.

So, the “luck” is really in the first two, the third is just who you played (luck of schedule I guess). After the first two the Giants are 4.1 over (that is lucky) vs. the Padres 2.5, so they have bee luckier than the Padres yet keep whining about how lucky we are. Now maybe in our games we have won squeekers, but still.

Go Padres

by jayman66 on Aug 14, 2010 12:21 AM PDT reply actions

they also complain about how our pitchers aren't that good based on K and BB rates

the Giants and Padres are 1-2 in MLB in K/9 and the Padres are 7th lowest in BB/9, while Giants are THE HIGHEST BB/9 OF ALL. We’re 3rd in MLB in K/BB and they are 16th.

also, team OPS+

SD 99
SF 93

Which apparently means…they should be beating us in the standings?

I know that the protest is null/void

But I’m still interested to know what the ruling would have been if the Giants won. Has anyone seen/heard anything about how it would have played out if the Giants won?

by thepadfather on Aug 14, 2010 11:24 AM PDT reply actions

I'd bet money

That it wouldn’t hold up. The rule says the runner must do all he can to not interfere with the play, and Hariston neither stopped nor truly went around the fielder.

In the very unlikely case that it would hold up and the Giants won, Mark Grant said that the game would be restarted today from immediately after that play: Top of the 4th, 2 out, Richard batting, with Hairston on 2nd and Denorfia at first.

by I8EtoDunbar on Aug 14, 2010 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

the ruling would've gone against the padres

Scan broke it down after the game. It’s an unwritten rule (logged in the umpire’s situational handbook) and that exact situation would’ve gone against the Padres.
