Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Padres beat Marlins 5-4

The Padres took an early first inning lead but couldn't hold on very long.

It wasn't until the 6th inning when Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a double over the head of the Marlins' left fielder that the Padres pulled away with a 3 run rally.  Ryan Ludwick came off the bench and paid early dividends with a base hit and a crafty slide into home that ended up making the difference.

It's also worth mentioning that Yorvit Torrealba continued his hitting streak and pushed it to 14 games with three hits today.

Heath Bell earned his 30th save on a nerve racking appearance where he allowed a run and left runners at first and third.

such a fun game

cool little moment in RF when Ludwick first took the field in the 7th… the whole crowd was giving him a standing O, and he just sat there and looked at the crowd in RF and smiled this big goofy grin and waved to the fans. he genuinely looked excited to be here in SD. i feel like i could really like this ballplayer.

I am so stoked on the Ludwick acquisition

you can tell that he’s gonna fit right in and be huge for us in the stretch. What an incredible game! Beating Josh Johnson at Petco really tells you something about how great this team is. The LA series is gonna be exciting.

Ludwick said in postgame that he was really encouraged by the fans reaction

So, I feel like I had a small part in him coming through for us.

I think they just did, getting swept by the Giants.

After the Padres big win against the Fish, I thought only splitting the series would put LA out of the race. Now, if the Padres really want to make a statement on this 7-game road trip, they need to take at least 3 of four from the Dodgers, and sweep the Snakes.

Great game

I almost lost it for us by not high-fiving the drunk guy in front of me when Bell came in. I got distracted and left him hanging, next thing you know, double in the gap.

Bell got another out and I redeemed myself with a makeup high five and we won the game.

Shout out to justdave, who I hope got some water and a nap after the game.

Its not any easier/fun to say than Ludwick and the fact the he’s a stud is pretty much implied already. I’m not super against it, but we can do better. Although, I could see just referring to him as Stud.

FYI

I was playing around with lineup optimizer to see what it recommends for our lineup using 2010 stats. I put in Venable as our current LF, but I don’t think it would change if I used someone else. I also had Yorvit as our catcher, that would probably change things with Hundley. I also used today’s pitcher, Richard.

It came out with an optimized linwup (4.508 runs/game) of:

  1. Torrealba
  2. Gonzalez
  3. Tejada
  4. Ludwick
  5. Headley
  6. Venable
  7. J. Hairston
  8. Richard
  9. Gwynn

Predict-o-tron's linwup would average 4.192 runs/game

For those that don’t follow me on twitter, I do a halfway decent job at guess Buddy’s linwups. Here’s what I had for today:
J. Hairston 4, Tejada 6, Gonzalez 3, Ludwick 9, Headley 5, Torrealba 2, Venable 7, Gwynn 8, Richard 1

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Aug 2, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The linwup optimizer isn't going to like BudBot's linwups that much because

He has J. Hairston lead off and his 2010 OBP is .309 and his SLG his .353, which are not the kind of numbers you want for the guy that will end up with the most At Bats on the team.

I was thinking that this hasn’t been as bad for us because Jerry has done better since moving to leadoff, but that’s only partially true. His OBP is higher (.323), but his SLG (.324) and Avg (.245 vs .251) are down. However, increasing your OBP while batting in front of Adrian is probably way more important that the other two.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
