Krasovic reporting Padres trade for Ryan Ludwick!
Tom Krasovic is tweeting that the Padres have just acquired Ryan Ludwick
Union has approved trade. #Padres get Ludwick. #Cardinals get Westbrook, Padres give up two prospects.
I kinda half thought that being "buyers" meant we would pick up a dude or two. I had no idea it meant Miguel Tejada rounding out our bench and recent All-Star Ryan Ludwick appearing a day before August. WTF. I assume Everth is now a Portland Beaver.
All in all, I like what we've got going on and keep this in mind, when our rosters expand in September, we'll be adding guys like Aaron Cunningham and Everth Cabrera to the mix. We be rolling deep.
Here's the conversation from earlier this morning. (Thanks TheAxManCometh!)
GO PADRES!!!

As a Cardinals fan, I am pissed...
you guys gave up barely anything (2 prospects who weren’t even in your top 20 prospects) and got Ryan Ludwick…
The rejoicing Luddites can now flock to the West Coast. Ryan Ludwick, you will be missed.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Yeah, we like our OF depth which allows us to deal Ludwick
But Westbrook is getting paid more than Ludwick…And we aren’t all sold on Jon Jay yet….
You guys will like Ludwick, his defense is phenomenal, has a plus arm, he hustles all the time, and is a decent power bat. 37 HRs in 2008 (as many as Pujols that year). He was also an all-star that year.

Miggy at 3rd, Jerry Jr. at short, Chase in left, Venable/Jr. in center, Ludwick in right. Sound good?

by sixpakfrombelgium on Jul 31, 2010 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions
Me neither
Bud Black didn’t rule it out. But, Tejada is just as bad at third as he is at SS. And Chase is good at 3rd and horrid in left.
Think about it this way, would you rather have a LF in your lineup or a SS. And if you just want t get Jerry in the lineup after Eck is back, then put Jerry in LF. He’s good out there.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

My whole life is aiming for the 5.5 hole.
by Phony Gwynn on Jul 31, 2010 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions
I hate to say it, but...
Tony Gwynn is on the bubble in my mind. I would put Ludwick in RF, Scott Hairston and Venable platooning in CF, and Denorfia and Jerry Hairston sharing time in LF. If Gwynn can somehow stay on the roster until it expands on September 1st, he should only be used as a defensive replacement and pinch runner and last ditch option pinch hitter.
He strikes out too much. He ALWAYS takes the first pitch for a strike and the entire league knows it, therefore he is always in the hole 0-1 and just wasted the best pitch he was going to see. That partially explains the horrid BA of .220. He also can’t turn on an inside fastball, so he straightens up and takes the pitch for a strike.
And last night he again made an ill advised throw to the plate on a play he had absolutely no chance of making, allowing the batter to make it to second base. He has also done this multiple time throwing to third base.
I like his effort, but I think he might not make it through the season.

You don't win by just scoring runs
Also, his OBP is considerably better than his BA. He walks a ton. If you compare his OBP to that of most of the team, he is about in the middle. He just doesn’t have the pop. So, he really doesn’t hurt us that much in the 8th position.
And his defense is among the top 3 of all outfielders… so…
Top 3 sounds high, but I think people are definitely undervaluing his fielding.

Jordan, in a playoff series we are not necessarily the best team
The Phils could be really tough in a playoff series if they can make it. Halladay has been great and Hamels has been good as of late. And if they get healthy, they have all their bats.
The Braves are tough, but I think we could take them in a series.
We can take the Reds.
The Cardinals… ughh… if we have to play them. I don’t like the idea of being able to beat them with a 3 man rotation considering their 3 men are better than the 3 we would throw at them.
I won’t stop rooting for us. I think we are great in terms of a season where you have 5 SPs and a bullpen… not convinced that we are unstoppable if we have to go up against a team that has two CY young starters…

We now can compete bat wise with alot of those teams
Our pitching isn’t the best clearly but its still very very good
AND BEST OF ALL, OUR BULLPEN BEATS THE EVERLOVING CRAP OUT OF ALL OF THEIRS
Their starting pitching is good, if this turns into a battle of the bullpen which it will in many cases, then its no contest especially with the extra power from Tejada and Ludwick

TRADE MAKES SENSE FOR THE CARDS:
They have THREE great pitchers…. and then… what??? no one really…
They are in a tight race and NEED another SP.
So, from their standpoint giving up a bat, which may not be so vital (considering their other bats) for a SP that allows them to make the playoffs is a potential big win for them.
If westbrook can pitch decently, this is a good deal for them. Their starting three is TOUGH in a playoff series… but you have to be better than the Reds in the regular season.
Its definitely a risky move
I don’t hate it for the Cards. Its ballsy. I’ll give you that.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Ballsy but they need a SP
I think that’s what it comes down to. AND, like you pointed out, they don’t necessarily need Ludwick’s bat.
Exactly
If everything works out. They are a better team. At worst they go sideways. Its just that you are exchanging the known (Ludwick) for the unknown (Westbrook and Jay).

yeah, but this trade's also a pretty big risk for the Cardinals
Ludwick is a proven, solid ballplayer. He’s a guy you want on your club for the playoffs. The Padres scored big. Earlier in the season, I was thinking a Ludwick to Padres could work out well, but then I got scared of losing any arms in our bullpen. And that didn’t happen, thank god.
by recorddigger on Jul 31, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions
Hey, I hear you.
We are lucky we only gave up minor league players for a great bat. This is THE move we needed in the outfield (if we were going to make a move in the OF).
We weren't losing any 'pen arms
The Cards were getting Westbrook. That was their prize. Our best player(s) in the deal were obviously going to the Indians. And it would be silly for them to get immediate ’pen help. They needed prospects.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

Wonko, not for this year... but for 2011 and beyond
They can’t afford Ludwick with their other big players.
Westbrook has a contract for 2011?? or not? I’m not sure, but if he doesn’t, then this makes perfect sense.
They have a Kouz/Headley/Blanks situation with OF prospects (from what I have read), and if they have money issues with a certain player who is demanding big bucks next year… trading ~$8 mill next year for $400K…
Westbrook is on the last year of his deal.

Are the cards sending ANYTHING to get Westbrook? CJK and Scan made this point and I don’t get it
I’m starting to wonder if maybe we should’ve done this in separate parts to get both Westbrook and Ludwick

Let's be hypothetical here
Should the Pads and the Cards square off again in the NLDS, how di you think that series would go down?

I think it would be a bunch of low scoring games.
Wainwright, Carpenter, Garcia, and Westbrook/Penny/Lohse, vs your pitching staff. So anyone could be the difference. Hopefully not Ludwick.
Onubon > Gates
You would only throw those first 3
NO WAY do you NOT throw Wainwright and Carpenter out there as much as possible.
I think that gives the Cards the advantage on paper.
But, if Latos vs Wainwright is 0-0 going into the 9th… then I give us the advantage.
But when we throw Clayton/Garland/LeBlanc out there… any one of them could easily give up two or three runs in their 5-6 innings… and although that isn’t bad, if Carpenter/Garcia/Wainwright give up fewer runs (damn those sub 3.00 ERAs)…
advantage Cards
How would that work?
The Cards needed a SP to give up Ludwick.

I'm still at an 8
Depends how Ludwick performs. And, to a lesser extent, Tejada….
But the bottom-line is whether they win or not.
Disagree
The bottom line in having confidence in this organization right now is not about whether the new guys perform. The team is leading the division and the FO went out and got two guys (for a minimal price) who in theory should strengthen lineup. Yes, they have to perform, but ultimately that’s on the players. The FO, for the first time in years, was aggressive and made smart moves. If the players don’t pan out, that will suck, but seeing the moves that have been made – smart, smart moves – is the bottom line for me.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 31, 2010 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions
That's cool.
We didn’t have to give up That much to get these guys. Tejada’s a “win now” move, as unless he really tears it up, I can’t see him being here next year.
Ludwick’s both a “win now” move and a move for the future: either he gets traded for other pieces after the season (or before next July 31st) or he stays and (hopefully) provides a semi-big bat in the line-up in the likelihood Adrian goes…. Hard to see them both staying. Especially beyond next July 31st.
$8 million’s not a lot for market value for Ludwick, but it’s a lot for the Padres; and I’m with Wonko: especially playing in Petco, Ludwick will never have as a good a year as his best one so far; unless he went and played in one of the band-box parks, he probably won’t even approach that good a year again.
I totally understand where you all are coming from, but my 8 was already pretty high, and I personally didn’t need them to make a splash at this trading deadline in order to move up; and if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have moved down. That’s just me. If they make the playoffs, I’ll be at a 9; if they don’t, unless it’s just a major collapse, I’ll probably be at a 7.
I think we could have made the playoffs as we were; we’ll never know…. Does this give us a better chance of making it? Probably, but that remains to be seen — not only how Ludwick and Tejada perform, but how everyone else does, as their roles change.
If we make the post-season, I think this gives us a better chance of advancing, but only marginally: we don’t match up All that well against the Braves or Cardinals; of course nobody thought we’d beat Atlanta in ‘98, so anything can happen. If somehow the Reds win the wildcard and we were to play them, we’d probably be favored in that match-up.
A long way to go, though, and we’ve got to continue to play well, especially through that 17 of 20 on the road stretch in August. Brutal. That’s where hopefully Ludwick and Tejada will prove their worth.
Jed is still looking for a rotation arm

Jairston, Eckstein, and Tejada
may not be in the line-up at the same time, unless it’s against a lefty. In which case Headley won’t be in the line-up.
As you say, Jairston can play left, but then I think Denorfia’d be in CF instead of Gwynn. Against lefties, that is…. Plus, Scotty will have to get playing time, too.
Maybe your line-up is actually good against righties, too, but Black will try to get as many people starts as he can; I still like Adrian hitting 3rd, though, with Ludwick hitting clean-up, and, for now, Tejada hitting 5th…. He’s got to prove he can contribute. Against righties, I’d bat Headley before Hundley….

Against lefties the line-up gets pretty easy, with the IF as you say, Denorfia and Hairston in the OF with Ludwick, and of course the Torrealba/Hundley platoon….
Against righties there will be more variation. Gwynn, Jr. will be in CF; Headley will be at 3B. Tejada, Jairston, and Eck will be in the middle infield; Jerry could also be in LF, but so could his bro or Denorfia (or even Venable, if he gets out of his slump).
If Tejada’s ineffective, Cabrera will re-enter the picture, esp. as a defensive replacement.
And once September arrives, Cunningham will be back in the mix, too, although there’s even less room for him now than before….

He has been awesome, but I think you don’t send Webb back down unless you want to damage his confidence.
Regarding infield/OF… Everth must be sent down, if not when Ludwick shows, then when Eck gets healthy.

the padres bullpen is so good that
they’re sending down Frieri, who has a line of:

Here's my theory on how Jed pulled this off
purely theoretical:
Jed was very close on a Westbrook trade, but ideally wanted to use those negotiations to lure the Cardinals. The Indians really wanted Kluber, but the Cardinals were set on Westbrook as their absolute best option remaining for their #4. Yet the Cards’ prospect options didn’t look as good to the Indians.
Jed might’ve forced the Cards into a do-or-die situation involving Westbrook. If they didn’t give up Ludwick, Westbrook would be traded to the Padres.
He held them hostage, and hell, maybe he was bluffing all along.
Something like that
I also don’t think he wanted to give up the prospects he did for Westbrook and his salary. Taking Ludwick instead fixes that.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

UZR can fluctuate
Also, players can have career years at defense too. Hard to say which is which. He’s never been a negative out there statistically, so I say he’s a good RF.

1B AGon
2B Eck/Jhair
SS Tejada/Jhair
3B Headley/Tejada
C Torrealba/Hundley
LF Denorfia/Shrek
CF Gwynn/ Denorfia/Shrek
RF Ludwick/Denorfia/Shrek
I don’t know enough about arm strength, but if Ludwick is not as good in the field as Venable, then we need our CF to be Gwynn probably most games. I say this b/c we can now tolerate him in the 8-hole without fear. The problem was always that we ALSO HAD Cabrera and Venable in the 6/7 slots with also Gwynn…
So, Gwynn might get more playing time in CF, Ludwick starts most games in RF and Denorfia/Shrek platoon a bit more
Headley
Eck
AGon
Ludwick
Torrealba/Hundley
Denorfia
Tejada
Gwynn
Pitcher
Although… I could see having Torrealba batting 3rd, and slotting Adrian/Ludwick down to 4th/5th. There are a lot of very interesting combinations now…

Werth is a giant bag of douche.
that ball was in the stands. the guy was protecting his kid. if the ball is in the stands its fair game..
but either way, the way he reacted to that fan in front of his kid was totally unacceptable. in no way, shape, or form would i tolerate one of my players reacting that way to a FAN.

Not that I'm calling that girl ugly
I’m not saying anything about the redhead in that anigif. Other than she has a terrible shirt.

They're underage.
Why do you care how attractive they are?

That’s a bit weird to be managing him now.

I have tickets for tomorrows game b/c of my season tix package
Now I get to see Ludwick’s debut. Hopefully the fans will join me in giving him a standing O when he gets his first ab.
There will definitely be a good cheer
There was for Tejada yesterday. Stand O? That’s pushing it.

@Marty1090 (from pre-game interview w/ Buddy)
Buddy won’t speculate on roster move but says Gwynn, Denorfia and Venable will still see playing time & are part of this team. Hmm…

I wonder if that means anything about
scairston losing playing time
by thepadfather on Jul 31, 2010 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions
With the salary they are taking on here
Scairston probably doesn’t belong on this team much longer. They’ll probably wait until the offseason to make that move though. I wondered to myself if they could find a trade partner to send him somewhere, but the deadline is past.

Yeah if we get rid of either brother, the other brother will be bothered.
And also get rid of Stairs FFS. Hairston can be our pinch hitter.

Efren down to AA or AAA for Ludwick
Cut Stairs when Eckstein gets back.
I think my math is correct. Scairston >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Stairs

The Padres inquired about Jacoby Ellsbury before picking up Ryan Ludwick, but were told he’s not available according to ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes (Twitter links).

Aquiring Ludwick should be huge for this team- gives us a genuine power hitter to protect Gonzales with

Don't fret, Redbird fans, you got a prospect.
Last time we got a veteran OF, it was Edmonds, and you didn’t miss him. In return, you got unknown prospect David Freese.
Let us hope Ludwick isn’t like Edmonds, and you hope Greenwood is like Freese.
My best guess is, we’re going to be happy Ludwick isn’t Edmonds, and you’re going to be happy Greenwood is your lefty starter 3 years from now, plus or minus.

I'm cheering for the padres from NYC
I am a new yorker who’s been turned off by baseball thanks to a team in my town. They bought a world series last year, and will do the same thing this year and next year and keep getting more and more boring. Their team has a superstar at almost every position and their games are the most boring things to air on television. They drove me to buy MLB TV and all year I’ve enjoyed watching the Padres!! Get another bat, an ace, and get to the world series and beat the evil empire!!!

I always loved Jed Hoyer.
Seriously, this is an amazing trade executed with minimal resources giving us exactly the type of player we needed. Just incredible. This will go down as one of the best trades in club history. I can’t wait to see this club with a credible clean up hitter behind Adrian. I’m just ecstatic.
Speaking of Ecks, I just hope that when Eck is ready to come back we at least platoon the shortstop position with Jerry and Tejada, although I’m hoping Tejada rides pine as often as Stairs. He just isn’t an everyday player anymore, I hope we can limit the damage until that’s obvious to everyone.

Unsubstantiated statistic
I recall hearing on the radio that Ludwick leads the NL in average with RISP… that’s making me feel pretty darn good. Can somebody verify that?
The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.
If I had a nickel from every SBN blog that has banned me, Arrowhead Pride would owe me 5¢.
