I think that counts as a rather big bat and combined with Tejada, Gonzalez does get some protection and help. I will say this much, ownership is doing the very best they can with the hand that's been dealt. I rather like this move.

5.45 mill this year; arbitration eligible for next
it’s looking like he’ll likely be with us next year too, which is most excellent.

I think I saw he is under contract for 8 million next year
Hope we didn’t give up Castro. Leubke would be ok I guess
I'd rather give up castro than luebke
personally.

Have you seen how well he's doing this year?
He could help out the big club this september. Castro probably could not.

who's the odd man out on the 25-man roster?
I was dating this girl from Canada... after about a month I found out she didn't know what sport the Padres played, she thought "padre" was spelled p-o-d-r-a-y and she thought it was some kind of a fish. Dealbreaker.
I'm hoping that it's Salazar
or else it would prob have to be venable (he is the only one left with options)

I agree about Salazar
but doesn’t Denorf have options?

No

Venable can join Cabrera in AAA
Hairston can play the OF positions (both of them if needed) and Stairs can pinch hit.
Venable and Cabrera aren’t of great need on a playoff calibur team

Ludwick and Tejada are both downgrades
defensively and with speed; they’d better come up big on the road in August because Petco will bring down their potential offensive stats.
Personally, I can’t wait for September when the rosters expand. But we have to make it through 19 of 29 on the road in August first.
Ludwick is in no way, shape or form a defensive downgrade
If anything, he’s an upgrade.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
And you've seen him play in Petco enough to know?
Rhetorical question which requires no response, although the way Scott Hairston played in LF today, maybe you’re right.
Ludwick will in all likelihood mostly be in right, though.
Good trade (in the present) from a front office standpoint, but we’ll see how it plays out on the field. Unintended consequences can be a bitch. This being a military town, I’m sure there are lots of folks around here who know all about that.
Afghanistan would be the war du jour ...
The other military analogy is that winning the battle means nothing if you don’t win the war…. It looks as though we won the battle of the trading deadline, but it only matters what happens on the field between now and late September/October.
How we pitch will have more to do with whether we make the playoffs or don’t (and advance in the playoffs or don’t) than an offense which will still be below average…. Maybe Ludwick and/or Tejada will catch fire and carry the team for a week+ (to several wins), which could make a huge difference….
Maybe the rather injury-prone Ludwick goes down for the 2nd time this year; if so, we have plenty of other outfielders (assuming too many of them haven’t gotten too rusty from not being used), and since we gave up no one in these deals who would have been pitching for us this year, it’s worth a shot.
Ludwick’s stats with RISP give me hope he’ll be the significant upgrade everybody thinks he’ll be, but he has been playing in the weakest division (by far) of all of baseball, so we’ll see…. He’s 8 for his last 31 with (just) 2 doubles, but 7 for his last 20 since coming off the DL (with one of those doubles).
We still have 21 games left against the NL Central (just over one-third of our remaining games), including 3 at home against the Reds and 4 in St. Louis with that team which has had our number, the Cardinals themselves. Thank goodness two-thirds of those games are against the Pirates, Brewers, and (mostly) Cubs (strangely, two 4-game series, so 8 of them).
After the last game against Florida, we only have 3 more against the N.L. East, which is a home series against the Phillies; and that means we have 35 games against the N.L. West, including 10 each against the Giants and Dodgers, 9 against the weak D-backs, and 6 against the up-and-down Rockies.
Even though the Rockies and Dodgers are 5 and a half behind the Giants and 7 in back of us, neither is dead yet by any means…. I’d still rather have the best record in the League at this point than be anyone else, but there’s a long way to go, and despite added veterans, this is a relatively young team (certainly in terms of pennant race experience), and we don’t know how they will respond.
Yankee veterans know how to deal with new arrivals at this point in the year, because it happens every year, and every year they’re contending; it’s impossible to know how the new additions and the mounting pressure will affect this team.
Trade is set
Padres get Ludwick
Kluber goes to Indians

also...
What I love is the way this new ownership goes about making trades, as mum is the word. Unlike the Tower regime, you never hear a peep about what they’re working on!
I wonder whether
this is a trade that might have come up while the Padres were trying to get Westbrook from the Indians with the Cardinals suddenly entering the mix.

Ludwick Frustrated in STL
Hours before his inclusion in a three-team trade that brought Cleveland Indians pitcher Jake Westbrook to St. Louis, right fielder Ryan Ludwick voiced concerns over his choppy playing time during a terse meeting with manager Tony La Russa, club sources confirmed Monday.
Don't hate the game, hate the nerds!
worked out well for all of us
Cardinals better hope Jay’s the real deal, otherwise they traded a killer outfield for a bag of balls
