Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

Miguel Tejada is in the #Padres lineup, playing shortstop today and hitting 4th. Aaron Cunningham is the odd man out on the 25-Man Roster.

What has Cunningham not done

that Everth, Stairs, and Saladbar have? This sucks.

Total dick move.

Didn’t they just tell him to find a more permanent place to live in SD? Plus, if they wanted to get rid of and OF, they should have DFAd The Salad or Stairs.

Yeah

I thought he just got some more permanent digs. Poor guy.

He will be right back when Eck is back.

When Eck is off the DL, Cabrera goes down along with Stairs to the DL

This is bullshit!

If anyone on the 25-man roster who should be on the outside looking in, it’s either Will Venable, Matt Stairs, and/or Everth Cabrerra.

Stairs has to be let go

He's a solid-state escalator

He’s offering the ability to evacuate the premises in the event of power failure, earthquake, or other elevator malfunction!

Safety is invaluable!

heh... solid-state escalator...

Do other baseball blogging communities have the nerd density of GLB? I doubt it.

I was dating this girl from Canada... after about a month I found out she didn't know what sport the Padres played, she thought "padre" was spelled p-o-d-r-a-y and she thought it was some kind of a fish. Dealbreaker.

Anyone think Salazar would have gotten shitcanned

had he not walked off the 9th last night?

Cunningham makes sense to me

He’s only been starting against lefties. I just checked out upcoming schedule. 3 rightsies for the Fish, unless Dodgers pick up Lilly, it’s 4 righties. Next lefty scheduled to face us would be Saunders of Arizona on Sunday 8/8, 10 games from now.

by Padsin10 on Jul 30, 2010 5:24 PM PDT reply actions

As much as I hate to see Cunningham sent down, consider this scenario...

We’re up by 1 run through seven innings. We need to protect the lead for two innings. If we send Cabrera to Portland, then 1/2 of our middle infield is composed of either Miguel Tejada or Salad Czar.

I know everyone loves Salad at the moment because of yesterday but, sorry, I don’t want him in there in a high pressure defensive situation. I’d much rather have Cabrera at short and JHJ at 2B.

Cabrera adds more value (strictly because of his defense) than Cunningham does because of the lack of depth in the infield with Eckstein hurt. In the OF we’ve still got guys who can reasonably cover for the absence of Cunningham’s offense (Deno, Hairston) and defense (Deno, Hairston, Venable), but there’s no one who can bridge as big of a gap that would be left if Cabrera left right now.

When Eck comes back, it’s a different story. But I think this is the right move for right now… however unjust it may seem.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 30, 2010 5:30 PM PDT reply actions

I think Stairs and Salad still have value.

And sending Cunningham down was the only way to not start giving guys away. I’m sure neither Stairs nor Salad would’ve cleared waivers.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 30, 2010 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

This may be a bad question

but does anyone think Cunningham was sent down to stop is arbitration clock? He may factor into the Padres plans over the next 4 years and they may have seen it to possibly get his services for another year at 400K instead of 2 or 3 mil?

by Grey Suit on Jul 30, 2010 5:30 PM PDT reply actions

No... I think Cunningham is a guy whose major league career is evaluated on a month-by-month (or week-by-week) basis at the moment.

I don’t think anyone’s planning, projecting or counting on him contributing four years from now. It’d be a nice bonus if it ever happens… but I doubt it’s a factor at all at this point.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 30, 2010 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, he's done well in a handful of chances this year

but the last thing we need is to overreact and find out he’s the new Jeff Francoeur

by abara on Jul 30, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats kind of what I mean

All Cunningham is doing while sitting on the bench is becoming a more expensive option for the Padres to keep around in the future, by sending him down at worst they are saving themselfs a couple mil on a 4th or 5th OF in a few years, at best they are saving themselfs a few mill on a starting OF.

by Grey Suit on Jul 30, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it's a factor at all.

IF Cunningham happens to still be a Padre 4+ years from now and this stint in the minors happens to save the Padres some cash, great. But I don’t think it had anything to do with the decision making process now. There are just way too many variables between now and the time that Cunningham would become a free agent that it doesn’t make any sense that they’d be worried about it.

Sly Pork will be called up in Sept – correct?

by Hormel on Jul 30, 2010 6:10 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, Sept 1st.

He might be back before then anyway. You never know what’s going to happen.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 30, 2010 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Hopefully before then

I’d prefer to have Cunningham on the playoff roster … what’s the cutoff for that?

by Lancers46 on Jul 30, 2010 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope Pork doesnt become the next Macias because of all this bullshit

The kid deserves to play here in the SD right now. Maybe its because Buddy trusts Venable/SHair & the others but I would rather see in this pennant race a lot more of Pork and for that matter Deano than Scottie

If I pick it, I flick it

He's not Macias.

Yeah, the org has way more regard for Ham than Macias.

He’ll be back on Sept 1st at the latest. You never know what’s going to happen in the future, but if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’ll earn a spot on the 25-man next year.
