Padres add Miguel Tejada in exchange for Wynn Pelzer
This is the move! This is the big bat! Miguel Tejada is now a Padre and we gave up Wynn Pelzer to get him.
If Tejada's a starter for us, this likely means that Chase Headley will move back into the outfield so that Tejada can take third base. I am fine with this. Tejada's a free swinger who has seen better days, but he may be just that extra upgrade that we get over Oscar Salazar or even a Hairston brother on a non-clutch day.
If I told you at the start of the season that July 29th would arrive and Adrian Gonzalez, Heath Bell and Miguel Tejada were all Padres, you would've had me committed. ADMIT IT.
GO PADRES!!!
Look at him. He looks like a proud Padre.

I'd rather keep everth on the big league club
over salazar, but this way i guess we don’t have to lose salazar if that means anything…
Everth needs more playing time

Not so sure they send down E-Cab
That would leave them with just two middle infielders in Tejada (who they aren’t sure can play SS still or 2b at all) and Jairston. I imagine they send Salazar to AAA. Then maybe when Eck returns they swap Salazar and Everth. I wish they would release Stairs, but they probably want to keep him around to have bad at bats against RHP’s off the bench.
I am assuming Salazar still has options? He’s only got just over 1 year service time and is not on the out of options list at MLBTR…
Of course they will probably end up doing something stupid like send Cunningham down. By the way, why have they stopped starting him? I like him the best out of our corner OF’s.

I approve
no mentions of him playing 2B yet, but I would hope he could play there some days to give eck a rest if needed.
Solid move, doesn’t seem like it can hurt us, like his veteran presence.

Not so great D
that’s sort of why I was hoping he’d play second. But to be completely honest, Everth has incredible range but also has gobs of errors.

Headley will definitely not play LF again
We didn’t trade Kevin Kouzmanoff because we still wanted Chase to play left field.. Tejada brings a right-handed bat to the table that can spell Headley against LHP.. If you watched Headley in LF in 2nd half ’08 and the majority of ’09 you would see that he is not cut out to be an outfielder.. Not to mention that his defense at third base has been well above average once he got back into his comfort zone. My hope is that Tejada will be replacing a roster spot occupied by either Matt Stairs or Oscar Salazar.. Please let this be the case!!!

I think it makes more sense for him to take Cabrera’s spot since Everth could really benefit from spending some time in AAA.

Bye Bye Chase Headley!!!!.....
…this move IN NO WAY , means that Headley is playing the OF. If anything, it means that he’ll be benched more for the stretch run. Miggie may not have quite the range that Chase has but his glove is comparable…and of course, he has a track record of HITTING!!…something that Headley knows very little about, apparently. I see Miggie getting more time than Chase @ 3rd…I see him playing some SS. Im not so sure that Cabrera is going to Portland, tho. They may need him to pinch run. The more speed we have, the better.
I totally agree
Let’s bench the second most valuable player on the team.

Yes, but .195 is a whole lot of suck from that side of the plate.
I know that there is a fuzzy middle ground to statistical interpretation. But the extremes do say something.
Either way, the biggest offensive hole would have to be cabrera (as much as it pains me and my ecab t-shirt), but does anybody really believe that Tejada can play SS on a defense-first team. My prediction if he does the astronomical LOB% of some of our pitchers is going to come down to earth really fast.

You wonder.. you don’t have to have a lot of range to play 2B… Eckstein getting hurt… You wonder if Tejada has ever played second? Could Headley play second? They didn’t just make this deal to make the deal. They made it to fill a void. You’re not going to bring a guy that’s gonna mess with the chemistry of the team. Not at this point. Not after what they’ve gotten accomplished so far this year. They’re not going to mess with that chemistry. He was brought in to fill a void.

Going to comment on the game (and Tejada) since I'm just getting the chance
Got home just from work in time to see the bottom of the 9th. The one thing I love about this team is it seems like it’s always a different guy to step up. I swear, everyone on this team has had at least one clutch hit, everyone from Adrian to Chase to Deno and Salad.
As for Mat, he looked absolutely dominant through four, Dodgers didn’t have an answer except for the one mistake to Loney. Mat’s stuff was good and sharp, he hit 98 more than a few times on the gun too. Looks like he just lost a little focus in the 5th, started picking at the corners and missed. I’m interested to see how he does against the Dodgers in LA next week, if he’s the one to make the adjustments or the Dodger hitters.
I really don’t understand the Tejada deal. We don’t even have a place for him. Sure he can play SS but I would rather have Everth’s speed and defense, that is what this teams built on. He’s not even a “big” bat, just a mediocre one that’s an upgrade over are inconstant hitters. I wouldn’t mind seeing Tejada as our first guy off the bench but I’m not really down for him to start. I guess the price wasn’t too high to pay.
Think this is the only deal we are making or possibly another bat or even a pitcher?

Waivers will be increasingly difficult. Other clubs may claim guys just to block us.
Teams seem to be reluctant to do this
For fear that someone might do it to them. Plus guys that they try to make it through waivers typically have high salaries that you don’t want to risk taking on.

Didn't we do that to the Braves in 98?
Still, a halfway competitive team (Florida, for example … or Los Angeles if they wanted to be bitches about it) could put a claim on a pitcher we had an eye on, to a) block us and b) make themselves better.
Colorado is still pissed about Everth, they’d get us in a heartbeat.

My Friend the internets
Has this site called baseball reference.
In that site is the Padres franchise encyclopedia
If you know what hear Piazza was here (2006) you can go to the listing for that year.
Then you go to schedule and results
Its safe to assume that he played on opening day, so you click on that box score
You scroll down to the 2nd inning and you see Piazza’s at bat Play Description: “Home Run (Fly Ball)”
Alternatively, you could search on the site for Piazza and get his stat page.
You can see that he played for San Diego in 2006 and you could click on the SDG link and go see that year and follow some of the steps from above or you could hover over the part that says “Game Logs” click the link for 2006 to see his game by game results for 2006.
Here you can see that he did hit a HR in his first game, but you can’t tell that its his first at bat. So, you click where it say “Apr 3” and you get to that box score again with the play description in the second inning.
This is what I do anytime I want to see basic stats for a player or team. They also have stats for minor leaguers. The keep track of records for different stats. They have the franchise records for stats, which is something I love to peak at for the Padres (hitters and pitchers). They also track all the draft picks made by teams. Want to look up all the first round picks by the Padres? No problem (Careful there’s a Matt F_____g Bush in there). Plus tons of other stuff.

We've lost Sean Gallagher, Mark Worrell and Wynn Pelzer this season.
And gained Miguel Tejada. I just don’t see how were managing our resources effectively. For a team with a miniscule payroll, taking chances with cheap controllable talent seems like a good idea. Hoyers got to do a better job at managing our prospects and reserves. We can’t afford to lose potentially good talent and get nothing in return.

I'm not saying they performed up to their talent level.
But he was a submariner (no pun intended) who was capable of hitting 88. Let him suck in the minors, work with him, see if something develops. What does it cost you?
Sean Gallagher is a starter. He needs to be someplace he can have consistent appearances to work out his mechanical problems before you write him off as a sucky pitcher. He’s got good stuff, he just needs to work on some things. Fine, he can’t do it here. But he could’ve been a thow-in on a bigger deal, like for Peralta or Wigginton. To get nothing for him is a waste.
Wynn Pelzer was one of our top pitching prospects who we burned for an over the hill player having the worst offensive production of his career. I just don’t see it.
"Never have a motto, that's what I always say" - Me
Pelzer was not one of the Padres top pitching prospects
Lubeke, Castro, Sampson, Kluber, Italiano…. are all better prospects.
Pelzer would not figure into the Padres pitching plans for a long time.
He was the Padres #5 overall prospect according to BPro's Kevin Goldstein going into the year.
He was also #5 for John Sickels at minorleagueball.com
He was also #5 for FanGraphs
He was #7 for Baseball America
He did struggle this year (although some of it was BABIP related) and that had his stock down for sure. But, he has the talent and, until recently, the production of one of our top pitching prospects. We did not give up chump change, but we didn’t exactly give up something we would miss either.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
they had give up someone halfway decent
Padres got the SS and 3B help they needed – for a guy they won’t miss and a mil cash. Sounds like a heck of a deal to me.
Also, Tejada reported has good clubhouse energy that the Padres have been thriving on all year.
"I post like canned meat."
Another take on Pelzer
This one from FanGraphs’ Bryan Smith
There is no downside to this move by the Orioles, who open up a spot for a red-hot Josh Bell by trading Miguel Tejada. The pickings were going to be slim, but Pelzer at least offers a live arm with a lot of potential. Pelzer was a ninth-round pick in 2007, but got above-slot money despite an enigmatic career at South Carolina. The Padres returned Pelzer to the rotation, a role he could never hold onto with the Gamecocks.
Entering the 2010 season, the decision couldn’t have appeared better. Pelzer was commanding the zone better than he’d ever before, and in 2009, even the Cal League’s tough environment couldn’t hold him back. Pelzer allowed just six home runs in 150 innings, posting a groundout-to-flyout ratio of 2.00. While he was pretty limited to two pitches, the movement on his 94 mph fastball was enough to handle A-ball hitters. The belief is usually that we don’t know a prospect’s true colors until he reaches Double-A, however, and it’s been a rocky season for Pelzer.
Through 18 starts, Pelzer had a 4.52 ERA, 1.13 GO/AO, was getting crushed by left-handed hitters (.846 OPS allowed), and a 4.72 BB/9. After July 13, the Padres moved Pelzer to the bullpen, whether because of his lack of success, a chance to limit his innings, or a chance to showcase his raw stuff for the trade deadline. In four relief outings since, Pelzer hasn’t allowed a run in 6.2 innings, and has been a groundball machine. Still, with 10 walks allowed, control is a problem like it hasn’t been since college.
With such a drastic platoon split that’s been apparent since his professional career began, it’s hard to imagine Pelzer having a ton of success as a starting pitcher. But in the bullpen, where his fastball can go above 95 mph with movement, and where his slider is death on right-handed hitters, Pelzer could be very good. If the Orioles end up with an elite reliever for a half-season of Miguel Tejada that they really didn’t need, it will certainly be a victory for them.

And not with a guy with the same numbers almost. It would leave a bad taste in Chase’s mouth.
It’s different if we got a proven 3B bat. But Tejada isn’t a third baseman, and with Cabrera’s bat being left behind in 2009, Tejada can help us out.

Tejada's got nada
I was at the game and when I was grabbing some food in the 2nd inning they brought in Jed Hoyer on the Padres TV Network (or whatever it is that they play inside the stadium). He said they’re still trying to make moves and have been on ttalking to teams constantly. Sounded like to me that this was definitely not the big bat they think is gonna put them over the hump. At least they didnt move any big pieces for Tejada. Down for him to spell Headley and play SS occasionally though.

We aren't getting a big bat.
If anything, I expect another bench player, maybe a 4th outfielder that has a little pop in his bat, or what will more than likely happen, us making a move for a pitcher.
I wanted Brett Myers, but on MLBN, I believe it was the Astros beat writer, who said he wasn’t going to be traded and was to be an Astro next year. And I see Lily going to the Twins.
I say we push hard for Westbrook before other teams get into that chase.

Theo Epstein has discussed multiple possible trades with former Red Sox assistant GM and current Padres GM Jed Hoyer, according to Peter Abraham and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Globe duo believes Boston could have interest in a reliever like Joe Thatcher, and, given the team’s excess of outfielders when Jacoby Ellsbury returns, they may match up with San Diego.

Historically he’s hit both LHP/RHP about the same, lefties slightly better. His defense does scare me though. Hopefully he hits more like the Tejada of last year to make up for it. I just hope that if he struggles Buddy doesn’t hesitate to bench him. I can take struggling E-Cab because of his range and arm, but struggling Tejada would be awful.
