Padres shutout by Dodgers, lose 0-2
I'm still pissed the Padres couldn't score with the bases loaded and nobody out. I have never seen a player look so lost in every at bat as Will Venable tonight. Billingsly is walking Padres like he's a boyscout, the Padres are old ladies, and he needs his merit badge to become a Webelo. What does Venable do? He swings at EVERYTHING. Not good swings either. He was on his heels, he was falling to his knees, he looked helpless. Of course when Venable hits a slow dribbler, we have Adrian Gonzalez idiling towards the plate in slow motion. Embarrassing.
Jon Garland pitched well but when he's taken you to the 7th inning, he's done his job and his time is up. I get Thatcher out of the 'pen. If I've got one of the best bullpens in baseball. I use it.
Oh well. Tomorrow. We get them tomorrow. I'm going. You should go to.
GO PADRES!!!

For leaving in Garland to face Andre Either. What was he thinking?

I can't complain about Bud leaving Garland in in that situation.
If he brought in a reliever and the reliever gave up that hit, we would have been giving him an ever harder time today. Garland got Ethier to hit a grounder, it was just unlucky that it found a hole.
I’m much, much more disappointed in our offense. Adrian, Venable, and Everth all had some very ugly at-bats last night. Billingsley didn’t look that good, and our hitters were just handing him outs.

Ultra-crappy performance all round...
GOK what Bud was thinking walking Martin to load the bases…then leaving Garland in.
Adrian’s second error was awful, made Judy have to work much harder than he had to to get out of that innings.
Leavin bases loaded – ugh.
Remind me why Matt Stairs is here again?
I was there last night, going again tonight – they better right this ship PDQ.

Didn't we have bases loaded in the 5th with no one out?
What the F happened?
The brief description at the top of this thread makes it sound like Venable really messed up, but… really, three outs worth, and no runs?
Weak grounder with slow AG on 3rd. TGjr popped out to Furcal. Everth struck out.
I think, I dunno.
I was pretty drunk, but my summary of every inning for the Padres hitters is either “1-2-3” or “some guys got on, Everth struck out looking.”

Venable was in a massive rush to get the at bat over with
and collected two strkes before he reached the batters box.

Mostly agree with TDK above.
If Thatcher had faced Ethier and done the same (or worse), wouldn’t we still be making BudBot jokes this morning? (“Must-Bring-In-Left-Hander-To-Face-Left-Hander!”)
At the very best, that Ethier knock should have tied the game. It all goes back to that bases-loaded, no out situation. Our offense was TERRIBLE last night, and that’s not Bud’s fault.
What I DID disagree with was walking Martin to load the bases….should have just pitched to him. Likely to get him out, but even a base hit would have only scored one run instead of two. (Not that it mattered in the long run—one run would have beaten us—but at the time you go for the lesser of two evils.)
What worries me is that I always thought Billingsley was average at best, and that we should be able to handle him. Kuroda and Padilla scare me more. (Although, I have to say the home plate umpire looked like he was hoping to catch the 10:30pm showing of “Inception” in the Gaslamp last night with some of those “strike” calls…)
As for Ethier, I thought he was supposedly sick? Even Vin Scully on the LA broadcast here said he thought Ethier was still back at the hotel. (Makes sense…why would you want a player with the flu hanging around the clubhouse and infecting the team?) Could it have all been a ruse, and what happened last night was Torre’s plan all along?? ;-)
Anyway, get ’em tonight! And Thursday!
Walking Martin
forced Torre to yank Billingsleyley – who was having a great night.
This normally would have allowed the Padres to attack their lousy pen
which obviously has one good pitcher – who the Pads got 2 hits off of.
Great defensive game and pitching by the Padres, but no runz = a loss 100% of the time.
"I post like canned meat."
It seemed like a good move to Billingsley out at that point...
but in hindsight I would have rather faced 1 more inning of Billingsley and one less inning of Kuo

I wouldn't have criticized him
because it clearly would have been the right call. It’s not really similar to putting Chris Denorfia in center field because we’re facing a left-handed starter and benching TGJ.

Vendable's delayed steals are pretty awesome...
gotta admit.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
More concerned/angry with Venable than Gwynn???
That makes little to no sense. Gwynn is the clueless one. I know he’s the Favorite Son and all, good defense, blah, blah, but I’d like to see him hit something other than a pop up when a pitch is above his ankles. And taking a first pitch that is right in his wheelhouse?? Grrrr….
I don’t blame Everth because he’s just overmatched (and that one pitch was outside). Venable’s a crap shoot. But sometimes he gets ahold of one and it goes a long way. Gwynn’s just gotta go.
by Andy (allfield) on Jul 28, 2010 9:36 AM PDT reply actions 1 recs
well, be mad at both then
0 outs, bases loaded… you have to get the ball out of the infield. Anything less is just poor execution.
I didn’t see Gwynn’s at bat, but at least he hit it in the air. But with 1 out, you still want to see something that produces a run…. anything less is poor execution.
Last night
It looked like TGJr was trying to elevate a ball into the outfield to get the run home with one out. Can’t really blame him for that. (its not like he was going to hit a HR or anything) I am usually not a gwynn Jr. apologist but for the past month or so he has been putting together some nice at bats, so I am not mad at him for last night.
It was venable and cabrera who quickly got themselves behind by swinging at bad first pitches . They basically posted a large sign on their forehead that read, “I am going to swing at anything that you throw”.
Here's what pisses me off about Venable....
Well, not everything that pisses me off about Venable…because I don’t enough time to go over all of it. So, let’s just concentrate on that one at-bat.
Billingsley was clearly frustrated by the time William stepped to the plate. After giving up the two hits to Aid and Chase he had fallen behind Yorvy 3-0. He battles back on Yorvy only to give up a bullshit infield single and load the bases with no out. William rolls up to the dish and immediately hacks at the first pitch he sees: a 79 mph slider. He sees a grand total of 5 pitches in that at-bat and swings at every f*cking pitch. The one he actually puts into play was a joke.
Should Anthony have knocked in Chase from third in the next at-bat? Hell, yes. But it’s just incredibly annoying to see a guy like Will walk up there in that situation….in that big of a game…and seemingly have no f*cking trace of a plan whatsoever. It was just stupid baseball and stupid baseball kills baseball teams.

Not to mention he was trying to pull a pitch
that was half way down the third base line, which resulted in the dribbler. He tries to pull everything.
Yup.

Garland was a bright spot, though. He really did pitch well, considering.

You ever drink wayyy too much and say or do something stupid...
and then the next day you feel hungover and ashamed and mad at yourself? That’s how I felt today. Like I was sobering up and ashamed and mad at my team and myself.
MEXGF used to call the day after drinking too much “the PDD’s” – post-drinking depression. She’d be like, “We need to go to the beach, I’ve got a case of the PDD’s.”
Today I felt like I had a case of the PDD’s. And I didn’t drink yesterday.
