Off Day NL West Thread 7/26

Currently the Phillies are in Colorado in the 7th and losing to Philadelphia 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th. A sweep of Colorado puts them 8 games behind the Padres and 5 games behind San Francisco in the NL Wild Card. Later tonight, the Giants play the Florida Marlins at 7:15. Barry Zito (8-5, 3.45) goes up against Ricky Nolasco (10-7, 4.50) Nolasco is 1-2  lifetime vs. San Fran with a 2.05 ERA with a .215 opponent batting average. Unfortunately, Zito has has the Marlins no. - he's 5-0 lifetime against Florida with a 2.15 ERA, and the teams opposing hitters are batting below the mendoza line of .197. Here's hoping the Marlins break this syle of domince by Zito and the Phillies knock the Rox down another notch.

Go Phillies and Marlins!

Phillies about to win over the Rockies. Purple Dinosaurs will be 8 (!) games back in the NL West race. What a difference 2 weeks makes.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

If we somehow sweep the Dodgers

we can put them 9 games back with 62 left to go. The Rockies would have to sweep the Bucs to keep pace. Still a lot of games left but it’s getting closer and closer to a two team sprint to the finish between the Pads and Giants.

by Natrone Bomb on Jul 26, 2010 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a big "IF"

If the Padres do sweep the Dodgers and either split of win the series at Chavez Ravine, then it’ll be safe to say that the Dodgers are out of the picture.
I’m still not counting out the Rockies, eventhough they were swept by the Phillies.
The NL Wild Card between the Giants, Phillies, Reds, Rockies could be a photo-finish.

De-fense

FTW. Also For The Confusion.

Marlins suck at it. We rock at it. Also, Bullpen FTW. The Marlins bullpen is Leo Nunez and a bunch of nobodies (sorry Clay).

Also, our team OBP at Petco Park is .342. So, the fact that we only have one hitter with an OBP over .330 on the season doesn’t seen to hurt us too bad at home.

That is a shocker

Ubaldo struggling after the All-Star Break…their offense isn’t firing on all cylinders…Troy is still on the DL…I don’t think they’re compltely screwed, but they’re in a deep hole right now, and won’t help matters if the Padres win the series against the Dodgers.

So Jayson Werth nearly became a Padre today.

And could still before Saturday. Someone’s gonna have to be on standby to talk Dex down if that happens.

A bunch of internet rumors cropped up because Werth wasn’t in the lineup today and then he came into the game later on. I hardly count that as “nearly became a Padre today.”

There were some rumors

the Padres made a deal to send two top prospects to Philadelphia in exchange for Jayson Werth. Darren Smith dismissed the rumors within the first ten minutes of opeing his show.

Am I in the minority when I say that if we shed two top prospects then we better get a player with much more than half a season of team control left on their contract?

And as much as we all hate Werth

He would be the solid protection that Adrian needs at cleanup. Plus, the Philies want to make a play for Oswalt and they may have to dump Werth’s 2010 salary of $7 million+ to make t happen.

The Phillies' salary is $138 million

They’re closing in on the Braves in the East, and getting Oswalt would put them over the top.
I think they’d be willing to eat most of his contract if it assured them that Oswalt would be playing in a Phillies uniform.

Oswalt probably wants his $16 million contract picked up through 2012

If the Phillies were to agree to those terms, someone in the clubhouse would have to take a paycut, and since Werth is a free agent in the offseason, the thinking may be to send him off now and get some prospects for him.

Probably becasue the Phillies

need a proven arm in the rotation. Hamels has struggled this year and last year, Halliday is the only person in the rotation that has shown some sort of consistency despite the 11-8 record, and between Joe Blanton and Kyle Kendrik, their combined ERA is over 5. something you probably don’t want as you’re trying to make a playoff run. Plus, the thinking would be that they’re putting their fatih in Polanco, Rollins, Ibanez and Victorino, along with your star slugger Howard, that they will help carry your team to a potential Wild Card berth.

A word on Lidge

Brad Lidge had his best seasons in 2006 and in 2007. The last two starts, he had almost blown back-to-back save opportunites against the Rockies. If i’m the Phillies GM, and i’m trying to trade Werth, I’d ask for a reliver that could become an effective closer in place for Lidge.

Speaking of Merriman

Why was he at the NFL meeting in Entourage last night?

Players cannot own a team and I know that he didn’t have the $200 million that Ari was asking for from everyone. I think he has always wanted to be on the show and they finally let him get some facetime, but it was a stupid role. Now maybe if he ends up getting a team and then needs a player he could call on Merriman to show up and play a decent role. Also Merriman said something about “I’m a free agent durr…” I’m starting to hate that guy.

The NBA might be more interesting if it had that

But, instead its fully of a bunch of lazy millionaires that refuse to play defense, can’t dribble very well, don’t know how to shoot except for when they are two feet away from the basket.

Also, any given shot, no matter how crazy means next to nothing. Its still worth two points and barely improves your chance of winning. You might as well televise some street hoops in NYC if you want to see that type of craziness.

I don’t get why they even have a regular season. They should just play the thing like the World Cup or Champions League in soccer so that its a playoff from start to finish.

Are you talking about the "It's time we stop using BABIP" article?

If so, that was about for hitters, not pitchers. It’s still a decent measure of luck for pitchers, because they don’t have control over their BABIP beyond ground ball vs fly ball.

"This is no ordinary honey!"
Bolts From The Blue - Heavy with the facts, slightly less heavy with the opinions.

by Zach (maestro876) on Jul 26, 2010 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the same criticisms can be used for pitchers too

Like sinker pitchers get a lot more grounders and some of those are going to be hits even though that’s what they were trying to do.

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Jul 26, 2010 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Which is why I said groundball vs flyball is within their control.

But historically you see wild variations in BABIP from the same pitcher even if their batted ball profile stays the same.

"This is no ordinary honey!"

by Zach (maestro876) on Jul 26, 2010 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Peavy from 2004-2007 is a good example of what I'm talking about.

In 2004 his GB% was 42.4% and BABIP was .310. Then in 2005 he got more ground balls, 44%, yet his BABIP dropped to .288, despite a LD% that was essentially the same, rose actually from 20.4% to 20.5%. Then in 2006, his GB% went way down to 38% and his LD% dropped to 18.4%, yet his BABIP went back up .316.Then in 2007 the GB rate went back up to 44%, yet the BABIP dropped back down to .286.

We know that ground balls and line drives go for hits at a higher rate than fly balls, so the fact that his BABIP did opposite of what it should have done shows the influence of luck. You can measure xBABIP based on batted ball profile, and if there are significant differences between the pitcher’s xBABIP and his actual BABIP, that’s luck involved.

Flags fly forever.

Guestimating that Hairston will be worth like 0.6 WAR or so, you’re looking at a significant upgrade. Considering that he’s usually a good defender and his UZR this year seems out of line with his true talent, we could probably put him in LF and see no loss in defense and a significant upgrade on offense.

Plus he’ll be a Type A FA, so we’d get a pair of draft picks as compensation when he walks at the end of the season. That would help make up for him being only a rental.

I want him...

But I don’t want to give up Luebke and/or Castro to get him.

Then you probably won't get him.

I'd see Castro more likely to be dealt than Luebke

because Castro is still a couple years away, and Luebke could be contributing to our rotation by the end of the season.

Batting average and RBIs aren't good measure of offensive capability.

His wRC+ is 106 and he’s been worth 1.1 WAR on the year.
Scot Hairston’s wRC+ is 103 and he’s been worth 1.0 WAR on the year.

At best, if Podsednik continued his current pace he’d give us like 0.1 wins more than Hairston, and we’d have to give up something to get him.

Tonight the Pads find themselves:
3 1/2 ahead of the Giants
6 games ahead of the Dodgers
and (most importantly)…8 games ahead of the Rockies.

Great night.
