NL West Watch 7/23
Hi, everybody!
We just watched our Breakfasttown boys beat the Butt Pirates in Pittsburgh. So what's going on with the rest of the NL West?
- The Rockies were just shut out 0-6 to the Phillies. They are now 5.5 games back.
- The Giants (3.5 GB) are currently tied at 1 with the Dbacks in the BOT 3rd.
- The Dodgers (5.5 GB) are down 0-1 to the Mets in the BOT 1st.

1st 4 in the rotation: Strasburg, Zito, Cahill, Hamels…maybe Correia 5th although I’m sure there’s someone better out there I can’t think of. Too bad Zumaya got hurt could have been the closer.

in all its glory
well basically it started when I was eight- My dad was a Bills fan at the time and he introduced me to the NFL. My first game I saw on TV was a Chargers game and I turned to my dad and said I like the way this team plays the game so i’ve followed the chargers since.
I Joined a Charger Based forum when I was 13 and used skype to appear as a guest on the Podcast. Since I started following the Chargers- I needed to follow a baseball team to fill the gap between the off-season so I decided to follow the Padres seeing as it was the hometown team,
I plan on moving out to San Diego once I finish university in 4 years :)

From the AP
“Haren is due to make $12.75 million each of the next two seasons with a club option for $15.5 million in 2013. If the option is not picked up, Haren is due a $3.5 million buyout. His contract also includes a list of teams to whom he could veto any trade.
“When asked about reports that Arizona was close to a deal with New York, Hall said via e-mail that, "They are one of a few that we are in discussions with." Then he went on to indicate the Yankees’ offer wasn’t the best the Diamondbacks had received.”
Padres won’t be getting him. Let’s hope he goes to the A.L.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
His defense
Is average for a second baseman. Essentially, the Brave’s handling of him is the epitome of how to not handle a top prospect, since they shifted him all over the place, from the left-side of the infield to the outfield to second base. He’ll make the plays he needs to but the range isn’t spectacular and he is prone to making errors. There

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
True, but I actually asked a Braves scout about him a while back at a UVA game

And yes, you’re right— but who’s to say that UZR is more helpful in describing tendencies than a scout’s view?
jtb yl1 OnATangent
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions
Because at least UZR is based on a relative scale
Which is why scouts use the 20-80 scale.
From a pure fan perspective UZR is easier to comprehend for getting any idea where he compares to the rest of the league. The 1 scout doesn’t give that relativity.
Not to mention a 1 scout poll is not exactly a rigorous study using “traditional” methods.

One season of UZR stats is on par with 50 games worth of offense. And he has 4 seasons of defensive data
Are you going to judge a player just based on one year’s worth of offense? And considering Kelly Johnson moved all over the diamond up until his rookie year in the pros, are you going to take those 4 years of data as seriously?
And come on, now you’re getting nitpicky. Yes I don’t know every scout’s view, but what can I do? Ask every scout? I asked one I know pretty well and that’s my general frame of reference. And if you’re looking for a 20-80 figure, then I’d probably say that he’s a straight out 50.
jtb yl1 OnATangent

When did I say I was juding him on UZR?
I put our his DRS and UZR and I… oh wait, that’s it. I just put numbers out there.
My problem with the scout is that he’s one scout. That some guy on the internet says he talked. And I’d have to trust that the scout was telling you what he really thought. And I have to trust that he’s actually a good scout. And on top of that the info is somewhat vague and not evaluative.
At least with UZR or DRS I know what I can trust and I know what the flaws are. Will I know the value he provides defensively for sure? No. But, I don’t need to, I’m just a fan. All I want to know is something that I can work with. The numbers I can work with. The vague description from supposed sources and a 20-80 number that was pulled from someone’s ass just won’t cut it. It’s too sketchy.

That in this era of baseball, you either have to have a huge payroll so you can spend big bucks to keep talented players or have depth and talent if the farm system to replace said talented players, and for the Padres, we’re royally screwed on both counts.
It feels like tha if you’re a big market team, you’ve got a more-than-managable head start. If you’re a small-market ballclub, you’re up s**t creek without a paddle.

No shit creek
You just need to build that farm system. But, when you ignore it for over a decade it gets hard to build it up. Its been a 5 year work in progress of something that will probably take 12-15 to really be something that keeps us competitive. We also have the capability to be a bigger market, but the fanbase is in a “show me” state, which mostly seems fair.
However, what you are saying mostly describes our current situation, with the exception that we’ve obviously earmarked a little more dollars than most teams for taking on midseason salary.

I'm not trying to be self-righteous, but you're cornering me and I'm trying to defend my credibility
And your mention of value beyond anecdotal stuff is simply not true.
A scout’s insight will tell you that a player is not reading the ball quick enough, and that explains his average drop or lower OBP. Happened to the Giant’s 2nd round draft pick this year, Jarrett Parker, when he slumped last season for Virginia, which caused his stock to tumble from first-round material to marginal 2nd round.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Eh well that's subjective.
I had a vested fan interest in Mr. Parker, so that really interested me. And when I brought that up to the BA high school scout, he confirmed what I thought I saw. And then I could somewhat create a link between the poor stats and the mechanics.
jtb yl1 OnATangent
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions
So it's a tangent b/c it has nothing to do with Kelly Johnson
But it does show that I’m not relying on this one and only scout. If I have questions and I see a scout, then I ask. I’m in a nice position where pro scouts and BA guys come to our games, so I have a wealth of knowledge in front of me when I want to learn something.
jtb yl1 OnATangent
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions
That insight would also explain Gordon Beckham's form this season
His mechanics were featured on a really insightful article in THT recently. Scouts catch that stuff, stats don’t.
Each aspect should compliment each other, and the gist of it is that you really can only make an informed judgement/opinion when you’ve seen a player enough.
Kelly Johnson? I don’t have credibility there, since I haven’t seen him enough. Most college baseball players? Different story

Because neither of us seem to be able to concisely say exactly what we mean and don’t give up when we aren’t quite on the same page.
Also, Allen seems to have it out for me because I use the readily available information (stats) instead of magically finding scouting information that he supposedly has.

I never played point guard
I played a role like a point guard would in basketball in the pool for water polo. Big difference. And it was only slightly pulled out of my ass, because it was the only good example of balls kicking I could think of at the time, and someone responded to it.
And I really promised myself to stop posting, so yeah I have poor will-power.

jtb yl1 OnATangent

Once we were arguing about the merits of Coldplay, and five hours later the discussions morphed to ones about the ethics of cloning humans
B/c I think it went from friend likes Coldplay, I think they are tainted because of Viva la Vida, I defend Sujfan Stevens, another friend/dormmate says Sufjan is crap and Mountain Goats is good, then we go into a triangular argument about their Christan lyrics, which leads to cloning debate

It's just a "..."?
Yeah I should probably take that to heart. But that still doesn’t justify the twitter thing though, not cool in my book

I saw that
Laughed pretty hard at that. I was actually wrong about the common sense. I think its a sense of humor he’s missing.

Okay, let me just put it this way.
I tried going to sleep an hour ago, but couldn’t and worked on some of my freelance commitments. I trolled here for a second and caught this comment, and I must say that I’m quite offended.
You say that I have no humor, and you may just be right. But then you’re probably wrong too, since I probably wouldn’t have so quickly played off the tension between us when we were discussion Kelly Johnson and agreed with you on stuff had I had no humour, had I taken things personally.
But when I saw that tweet, which I only ran over because I saw a retweet from Jordan_Ming on my feed (which piqued my trolling desire), I was disappointed and angry. I’d be fine with the tweet if that was isolated, but you clearly played it out and tweeted other users talking about me behind my back. I didn’t bother to look at all of the conversations, but the fact that they are there aren’t cool. What if you said something unfavourable about me, something nasty that I might never see? What if someone connected the dots, and that somehow ruins whatever promise I have in my professional career.
Even though our conversations may not be the most civil, they have stayed on this site on my site. I haven’t said anything nasty about you anywhere— even here (if I have, point it out)— and I’ve made my admiration for your intellect and savvy very clear. My big thing is about giving people more respect for the positive qualities that they possess and accomplishments they have achieved, and I consequently must give you respect since you clearly are one of the most prominent members of this site.
That’s why when the minor leaguer that I know (a UVA alumnus who’s pretty darn close to the majors) says that Poreda sucks, I give that opinion a certain amount of respect despite my personal belief in Poreda’s potential. That’s why when a professional scout(s) and baseball man of many years tells me something about a player or the game, I listen and learn. And when you say something, I try to do my best to understand that point as well and learn from it. You know far more than I do about the Padres and baseball, so I try to be inquisitive as possible. But the attitude I originally have is hard to maintain if you keep shutting me down and mocking me (and don’t say you don’t, because you do).
Perhaps this makes me a pushover, but that’s part of who I am. When you build yourself up to a certain stature, you deserve props. But at the same time, with privilege comes responsibility.
I’m a new member here, yes. And while I should take a bunch of shit., I feel like I should be generally welcomed here as well. I know you are who you are, but when something like this happens: http://www.gaslampball.com/2010/7/21/1581637/padres-defeat-braves-even-up-the#42633916 , and you present yourself as a prick when most everyone else understands what I’m trying to say and respects that, that’s over the top in my opinion. I am a pretty confident dude and even though many of my comments are piece-wise, I know what I’m talking about. I don’t expect you to change who you are, but that doesn’t give you the right to bash me like you’re doing. I am more than willing to stand up for myself and I never back down from a fight, and we clearly experienced that earlier.
In conclusion: is this message overly dramatic from me? Yes. Am I acting like a little kid in writing this? Probably yes. But this type of message is the type of catharsis I feel that I need when I see the crap that you’re talking about behind my back. If your Twitter correspondences with other Gaslamp Ballers about me were supposed to humorous, then why wouldn’t you just post it here where I could see it?
If people think I’m a waste of time and space on here (I haven’t read all of the correspondences, btw), then why shouldn’t I be entitled to see them so I can voluntarily leave? If I make such a mockery of myself, why shouldn’t I know?
Sure, my original reaction to your Twitter post probably was silly, but wouldn’t you characterize your tweet as the same? At the very least, would you consider my feelings and redeem me by rectifying that tweet in some manner? Even though I am a no-body, I am a writer for multiple platforms and a rising pre-professional that has worked with numerous prestigious firms. If someone manages to connect the dots, that could ruin a lot of things for me. And even though I stupidly use my real name as my account handle, it is truly because I don’t have anything to hide.
If you really believe that this: “the wicked man will see and be vexed, he will gnash his teeth and waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing,” (Psalm 112:10) is me, then why not tell me in a separate comment, away from the contexts and biases of our arguments? (Yes Dex, I know that this is a certain ban.)
And yes, to follow what TTG said, get ready because I’ll have my ice ready. And bring a cup too, because when you’re kneeling and getting iced, I too might just kick your nuts.
Find humour in that?
And while I’m clearing the air, I’m actually younger than Jordan and Jonathan— a over-achieving, Ivy-archetypal, rising second-year (three years) with an additional passion for sport. So pick on me all you want. Sayanora, and maybe I’ll see you in tomorrow’s OT. Or maybe I’ll defect to DRaysBay, a place that intimidates me (because they are so knowledgeable).
I’l see you Sept 10, and get ready to bring it. I may be small, but I carry a strong heart and will to win. And my USC credential (hopefully) around my neck.
—
(And to Dex, Kev, or jbox: If you find this inappropriate, just delete this or ban me. If I’m not welcome here, then I’ll leave.)
