7-22-10 NL West Watch
Evening folks. After watching our poor Padres get picked on by the Atlanta Morosis, we can revel in the struggles of our NL West rivals. Colorado has already lost in gut-wrenching fashion to Florida, continuing what has been an ugly 2-5 road trip for them that doesn't look to get much better.
Currently the Giants are in the desert, facing off against a Diamondback team fresh off a home sweep of the New York Mets. As we speak, Rodrigo Lopez has 2 outs in the top of the first. Opposing him is everyone's favorite Matt Cain.
At 7:10 pm, the hated LA Dodgers face the Mets, with Hiroki Kuroda going against Hisanori Takahashi.
Go DBacks! Go Mets!

I'm still in disbelief that I was able to pick up Huff on waivers in my main fantasy league,
and slot him in as a starting OF (my outfield also has Hamilton, Quentin, Pence, Dunn, LaPorta, and Cuddyer (soon enough).
He could have been useful for us, eh?

Huff was one of those high risk/reward acquisitions.
You look at his history, and he’ll either give you 4+ wins or below replacement level production. Sabean just got lucky with that signing. It’s not like he was doing anything differently than he always does, he was just fortunate it didn’t turn out like Aaron Roward/Mark DeRosa.

But will Miami ever be a baseball town?

One thing I’m curious about is the Marlins TV ratings in Miami. I know that the Rays have really high TV ratings even though they don’t fill out the Trop (understandably), and I’m wondering if the Marlins are experiencing a similar phenomenon. If so, then I could see the new Marlins park filling up and the team responding with higher payrolls. If not, then we could expect more of the same (minus a blip or two in payroll in the first few seasons after the ballpark opening).

Is that 3 of our fastest risers from last year (Darnell, Carroll and Forsythe) all lost a lot of their value. And its too bad because I don’t really see a clear path for any of them to the majors. How many days of service does he need to accumulate to get Super Two status?
That means he would qualify for arbitration after two and a half seasons or service, as long as he ranks in like the top 20% of the year’s crop? I never quite understood that— I’d love to read literature on that if you know a reference.

Players who have at least three years, but fewer than six, of Major League service time, are eligible to file for arbitration. In addition, there there are the so-called “Super Two” players. These are the top 17 percent of players, based on service time, with at least two but fewer than three years of service. The rule states that a player must have at least 86 days of service in the immediately preceding season to qualify for this status. Typically, the cut-off for the top 17 percent has been around two years, 130 days of total service, though the days fluctuate from year to year.

I remember
Back in 2004 worrying constantly over everything and we didn’t make the playoff. Then in 2005 I worried less, the team was worse and got in the postseason. I try not to worry as much now. I worry more when we suck. I also worry more when our farm system sucks. Having people who can care and build a farm system makes me worry less about the baseball team.

I really don't think its going to happen
The rumor mill basically said that Jed inquired and the price was too high. Then the San Diego media got a whiff of that, ignored the details and just ran with it. I understand the need to fill time in talk radio, but at least just keep the debate around, “Do we want Tejada? What would we give up for Tejeda?” and less “We are going after Tejada hard. Losing Eckstein means we have to go get Tejada. This season is a failure if we don’t get Tejada. The only way to get Tejada, who we need and will die without, is to give up Luebke or Castro.”

I think
He’s probably a very steady presence in the clubhouse, he does a good job of deflecting media, he lets players know where they stand and he garners respect. But, I don’t think anyone ever really taught him much about the strategy of the game. I think, like most managers, he picked it up from all the wrong places and was never a student of the game.

Here's a real interesting tidbit from a Krasovic article that a lot of people missed I think.
* Hoyer tells me he’s eyeing a few right-handed relievers in the trade market, which may reflect concerns about the durability of his bullpen. All the same, the Padres’ depth there is still the envy of many clubs. Same scout told me Ryan Webb would pitch with small leads in the seventh or eight inning for a lot of teams. Ernesto Frieri impressed the scouts who watched his season debut. If the Padres want to get creative, Kevin Correia is a better bullpen option than several clubs have (if that move happens, pitching coach Darren Balsley is a tremendous resource, because I think he’d be able to get Correia in the right frame of mind to accept it).

It kinda sucks for Kevin, because he was a tremendous resource for this club last year
but he just hasn’t pitched well this year and is a liability in the rotation.

The Red Sox bullpen is a disaster.
I wonder if they’d give us something nice for one of our relievers.

I wonder
If he thinks Hairston was really out at the plate and never looked at a replay. Otherwise, I don’t understand why he thinks the Padres would know it. The Padres beat them fair and square.
