"I'm going to be ticked if that's true," Bell told FanHouse. "And they (Padres officials) aren't going to like me if I'm ticked."

Padres closer Heath Bell was irked to hear this week that he didn't get an All-Star bonus, which tends to be $50,000

You know Heath

You sign this piece of paper called a contract. If you wanted a bonus if you made the All-Star team, you shouldn’t have assumed it was in there.

Especially considering that team policy is that all contracts will not included incentivized bonuses.

what can we get for Bell

considering he was playing G.M last week with UTs Sulivan…naming names, positions and claiming A-Gon can take a few days off for Berkman…give me a freakin break…stick to the bullpen pal and your frequent 1,2,3 outings

You gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to Heath.

I love when he’s talking s**t about how great the Padres are and that we’re going to be in the World Series. But I also know that he’s prone to saying dumb things like he’s “going to put San Diego on the map.”

The postal code?

I’ve got some friends from Kent who got me into the EPL. SW6 is like Fullham or something, I think. I’d have to ask them (and I’m too lazy).

And what? Next can we not make steroids jokes? Seriously…..if you’re a change-up pitcher, talking about “throwing meatballs” is a good razz, I think. If he like single-handedly won us the Series, then I’d get it. But harmless jokes are harmless jokes.

It's also the name of the non-existent derby

Since you don’t have any real derbies. When Roman stops being your sugar daddy, you’ll go down the tank with your whore of a captain, money whore of a left-back (who cheated on Cheyl Tweedy of all women), fatass rebound-scoring wanker of a Fat Frank, and a horseface (albeit a humanitarian one, so a pass here) of a striker. Oh and Le Sob.

I’m glad you’re into the EPL as an American, but you’re going to take shit for being a Chelsea fan. Get used to it

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm down for it

Chelsea reminds me of another team I have an affection for (the Yankees, which everyone here seems to hate…yes I would never root against the Padres on pain of death, but you try living in New York and want to watch some baseball. Be glad I don’t like craptastical Mets lol)

But as I was saying, Chelsea is a lot like the Yanks in the sense that they overpay for a lot of stars who are getting older (Shevchenko post-Milan, anyone?). How I’m almost positive that before the next decade is over our payroll will be not-infinite. Either that or more sheiks will buy EPL teams (like Man City) and be able to spend gajillions of dollars as well. However if they decide to do some more developing and get some more John Terrys and the like from their youth system or get some transfers from the lower leagues, they won’t be off too badly then. To use some more baseball metaphors, they can turn from the Yankees to the Rays with a higher-payroll.

Oh and what Ashley Cole does is Ashley Cole’s problem. The man can play, they pay him to do so, I just leave it at that. And again, Terry is a damn fine defender, so if he wants to sleep with a lot of women and act like a hooligan off the pitch, that’s fine. Again all I care about is the product on the field. I’m not the pope or someone trying to send people to hell for bad behavior, I’m just a fan.

And that’s my (rather terrible, if I say so myself) view on my EPL team. I can do Yankees opinions too, haha.

by TheFan09 on Jul 23, 2010 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

oh and

I rather like the London Postal Code system…..we should use that here. Makes a lot more sense than “92105” (my old zip code in San Diego).

by TheFan09 on Jul 23, 2010 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Roman has tried to develop a youth system, but it will never reach the likes of Lyon's (or even United's).

It will takes years, perhaps even a decade, to really see results. The likes of Stoch don’t impress me right now.

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

That's why I didn't give a year estimate

But I think if they decided to heavily invest in that instead of some the pricier transfers they could see a turnaround soon enough.

by TheFan09 on Jul 23, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps, but the academy is located in a non-prime & heavily saturated area

So it makes the job tougher. Also, I think Chelsea probably needs a change-of-pace from Arnesen.

Won't almost every American fan of the EPL be a bandwagon fan?

I mean, what other way do you become a fan of a team all the way across the ocean? Assuming that you are not related to a fan of a team.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

And yes, almost every American fan of the EPL or La Liga would be a bandwagon, and that's okay

But that doesn’t mean that they are exempt from taking crap because of it. Just be ready to defend yourself and hold people accountable for what they do or don’t know, just like you do here (much appreciated).

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

My complete position on this issue is this:

Football fans of the European leagues are probably going to be bandwagon fans, like you say, and that’s okay. Considering the geographical circumstances and such, I wouldn’t expect much else.

But if you’re going to jump into the bandwagons of one of the Big Four clubs of any league, then be a fan. Educate yourself. Obviously not every fan has the capacity to do this, but it disappoints me knowing that some fans don’t know who Sir Bobby Charlton, Alfredo di Stefano, are, or who Fergie’s Fledglings are, or have no sense of the history of the club— people who don’t understand or trivialize the Munich Air Disaster, Hillsborough, etc. Or don’t even know that there are 38 games in a season, or what Boxing Day fixtures are, etc.

Or if you think Ronaldinho still plays for Barca.

I can respect you as a fan if you use words like “squad”, “fixture”, “tie”, “tied”, “draw”, “campaign”, “punt”, “gaffer”, “manager” vs. “coach”, etc. in the right context. These things would reveal your understanding of the football culture— otherwise, be willing to learn and let football embrace you and you embrace football.

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Not from the UK, I get it.

But again you have to realize that I see Yankees fans who have no idea who The Chairman of the Board is (either one! yes, they both count lol). They only know Yogi for the commercials with the duck!

It’s a shame it happens, but they know just as much about what’s going on the field as I do. I respect that, and since I’m pretty much in the same position with EPL teams (not from London), I just hope that by continually watching that and not the Primera League I’ll eventually just become a good fan like everyone else. I’m pretty much there already though, but you know everyone has a ways to go.

by TheFan09 on Jul 23, 2010 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

You're a good fan

But remember everyone outside of West London’s gonna rib you, playfully of course. And I’m playfully ribbing you too— no hard feelings intended whatsoever. You seem like a good fan and I’m impressed with your knowledge of the academies and such (not saying I can judge this or be up on a pedestal, but anyway), but football’s an interested game and a different system. There’s a lot of cultural things you’ll pick up though, and that’s just a matter of being persistent and watching with an open mind.

And out of curiosity, have you seen a game at Stamford Bridge?

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm actually attempting to in a few years

It’s my last year in College, and then I have Grad School to worry about. After all that’s done in two years, I’m going to England for a good time (and for family….but mainly a good time). I hope they still sell Chelsea tickets on StubHub, lol.

I think next year me and a buddy are going to get NY Red Bulls seasons tickets for their new stadium. As much as I despise MLS, I want to see Henry like everyone else.

by TheFan09 on Jul 23, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

You'll find a ticket if you want to get one

Just make sure you buy a good time in advance. And as for the MLS, as much as I don’t favour it either, give it a chance! Some of the quality you see will pleasantly surprise you

That last paragraph

I think is just being a snob. If someone called “Extra Innings” in baseball “Overtime” I’m not going to get pissy about it. We aren’t English, we don’t have to talk like them. I’m sure the Spanish and the Germans and all the other non-English don’t call those things by those names. They have names in their own language.

Many are just trying to be fans of the game. If you don’t want new fans of the sport then give crap to everyone who tries. But, if you do respect the growth of the game, then don’t be a dick about it.

No you're right, and trust me I embrace every fan I can

With open arms and make sure to highlight the nuances of the game that make it special. Being a supporter of a small and modest club though, you want people to become true fans. At points its not being a dick, but just making sure you should know your stuff and embrace the culture.

And that doesn’t excuse ignorance. I never was explicitly trying to be a dick, but if you reach a proficient level of understand about players and stuff like that (like TheFan09 seemingly possesses), then I have every right to play around with that.

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

The point of it is that I don't like Gloryhunters (those fake ultras and those fake fans)

And you’ll have to prove yourself if you aren’t one. This would be moot anyway if you didn’t hop on to one of the Big Four clubs, so just go latch on to VIlla or Spurs— no flak there.

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you like who you like

If you like watching the best soccer and like the play of certain top players, then chances are you’ll like a Big 4 team. I lean a little towards Chelsea because I genuinely like watching Lampard and Drogba work. There’s also the fact that if you like a team that’s at the top of the EPL and plays regularly in the Champions League you’ll actually get to see them play. That seems pretty big. If you’re not a fan of the big 4 or the Spurs, then I kind of feel sorry for you.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Jul 23, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

That's true, but at the same time (like I mentioned above), you'll get playfully ribbed

And I’ve never really understood liking particular players (even though I do like players). If Lampard moves to Betis, will you support him in Liga Adelante? Same concept with LeBum Asshole.

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't understand liking teams all that much

My main focus in World Cup games this year was to watch certain players and its pretty much the same thing if I watch Serie A, La Liga or EPL games. And with Henry coming to MLS I’m actually tempted to watch Red Bulls games in order to see him play.

Also, I’m playing fantasy football for the EPL and I’ve got Lampard and Drogba on my team.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Jul 23, 2010 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't think of the fantasy football aspect, good point

I guess that changes things, although I just never really understood liking players. But then again, I’m a hypocrite because I hopped on the Spurs bandwagon in ‘98 because I respect Duncan so much. And I’m doing that right now with the Thunder and Kevin Durant (But I will still always like the Spurs and Thunder)

It’s just the fact that you don’t feel the thrill of the campaign/season if you don’t follow a particular team. At the same time, sometimes you just watch games to watch great players and to enjoy the sport being played beautifully at the highest level (usually), which I completely understand.

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 23, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

For some people

It’s hard to fall for a team that quickly. I find you can’t just force fandom. I can’t just pick a team one year and feel the thrill of their season. It has to come organically. So, in my case, I make do with what I can in order to enjoy the game.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Dead on

I apologize for whatever crap I said earlier— you’re spot on. In all reality, I just hope there are plenty more football fans to converse with (the World Cup has helped with this), and eventually they’ll find clubs to support. I’ll take more fans in a heartbeat though.

Not that I would know but I would think that when you’re making millions, $50,000 isn’t that big of a change in your bank account so why make a big deal about it? Not to mention it isn’t even in his contract. It’s supposed to be an honor to go to the All Star game and I get the feeling he feels like he’s entitled to money that the team isn’t obligated to give him.

Two things:

1. He has 4 (right?) kids to take care of and put through college. Honestly, I would probably do the same thing if I was in Heath’s shoes. Any money that I could put toward my kids would be welcome. And don’t they say it takes like, a million dollars or some crazy amount like that to raise a kid to 18? So yeah, I don’t blame him.
2. You never know what could happen. Something could happen and Heath could be out of baseball for forever tomorrow. Then what does he do?
