Game Thread: 7/22, Breakfasttown vs. Braves

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves, Jul 22, 2010 10:05 AM PDT

I planned to look up what time the game started this morning and I came across Corey Brock's tweet saying it started 1:10pm PT.  So I looked no further.

Here we are at 10:15, practically in the middle of the game, when we find out  that he lied to me.

Clayton Richard, the White Whale,  pitching as we speak.

Go Padres! Go Breakfasttown!

Don’t want to give up a young arm for an old pitcher with a gigantic contract.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 22, 2010 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't worry... it won't happen.

Hoyer seems well aware of the fact that this team is being constructed for 2-3 years down the line. There’s absolutely no way he trading any of our top pitching prospects for an old player or a rental.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 22, 2010 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Our window closes somewhat after next year

with AGon probably leaving….yes and any trade involving Oswalt requires the Astros to pick up a large part of his salary

by lamesapadresfan on Jul 22, 2010 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't agree.

Our pitching stays intact and probably just keeps getting better. What happens with the offense depends largely on what Hoyer is able to get in return for AG and what he can spend in FA. I don’t think we’re going anywhere for at least a few years.

I liked Ello's position on the Latos "injury"...

He was basically ranting about how it’s stupid for the Padres to rest Latos and protect his arm. We all know the Padres aren’t going to shell out the money to keep him in a few years when he’s FA eligible, so why are we protecting his arm for the future? We want to make sure it’s intact for when he becomes a Yankee?

They should schedule Latos

to pitch in all Dodger, Giant, and Rockie series. Bringing him back to throw against Pit and Florida seems to be not as an effective use of his innings, especially when he’s faced the Marlins twice and they’ve had some success against him.

They churn out these movies a couple times per year, produced with zero budget, and sell TV rights to SyFy and sell-in a decent amount of DVDs to rental outlets. They make a decent amount of revenue.

Carlos Gonzalez (bruised finger, ERD TBD)
Dexter Fowler (bruised arm, ERD 7/22)
Troy Tulowitzki (fractured wrist, ERD 7/28)

As the Rockies chase the Padres, injuries continue to foul up the works. They’ve held serve as Troy Tulowitzki has been out, but an injury stack in the outfield could be a major issue. Carlos Gonzalez has been playing through an injury to his left index finger, but he seemed to exacerbate it on Wednesday. Originally listed as a bruise, we have to assume that the injury got more painful somehow, but there’s no specifics at this stage. Finger injuries have a broad range of effects and timelines, with Gonzalez only missing one game previously, so the assumption is that this is a pain tolerance and comfort issue. The Rockies’ medical staff will have to find some treatment or device that will allow Gonzalez to hit without that pain. With Dexter Fowler out, also with a bruise, but this time to his upper arm, it puts the Rockies at a real disadvantage. Fowler is expected back in the lineup on Thursday, though his swing could still be affected by the effects of a HBP.

There’s some good news here though, in that Troy Tulowitzki played his first rehab game, going 1-for-2 and showing no issues with his wrist. Power is going to be the big concern, but having Tulowitzki back in any capacity is going to be a boost for the team. Forty days missed for a fractured wrist is pretty incredible in its own right.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Hmm?

I don’t think I implied anything about less hits or something. The BABIP is an anomaly (even for a typical pitcher), but his FIP and such are obviously going to be skewed.

jtb yl1

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 22, 2010 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Being a groundball pitcher wouldn't explain his low babip

because groundballs have higher babips than fly balls.

And they don’t necessarily defy the fielding independent metrics. Usually groundballers give up very few home runs, which factors into FIP big time.

Does that directly counterbalance Ks thought?

Groundballs have independent control over home runs (presumably), but other pitchers have the same control over Ks (presumably). Counterbalance or no?

I’ve never seen Pepper live, and I missed a chance to see them at State last year.

And I’ve only seen UL once. They don’t play a lot of all-ages shows in San Diego and by the time I was 18 they weren’t playing that much. My first and only time seeing them was in 2007. Scott Russo threw his guitar pick at me. I double rainbow’d. I’m extra super stoked to see them again.

Ok, here's the story

Erin Andrews and her dancing boyfriend were at the same restaurant as my friends and I last night. I instantly recognized her but didn’t say anything to her, because of her, you know, privacy issues.

I told my friend that she was here and then when she walked by us a little later, he said “Hi Erin, how are you?” kind of obnoxiously. I did a quasi spit-take because I was laughing as he said that, and it sounded like a sneeze. My spit-take breath went right in her face.

D-Day: War’s over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he’s rolling.
Bluto: And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough…
[thinks hard]
Bluto: the tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go!
[runs out, alone; then returns]
Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where’s the spirit? Where’s the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you’re gonna let it be the worst. “Ooh, we’re afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble.” Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I’m not gonna take this. Wormer, he’s a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer…
Otter: Dead! Bluto’s right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.
Bluto: We’re just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let’s do it.
Bluto: Let’s do it!

So using the xBABIP calculator

Our BABIP should have been:0.321
It actually was: 0.167

The Braves’ BABIP should have been:0.320
It actually was: 0.419

Luck played a HUGE part in this game.
