Padres lose to Braves, now 1/2 game behind best record in the NL. EVERYBODY OFF THE BANDWAGON!!!

GANGWAY! Everybody off of the muthaf_ckin' bandwagon!

The Braves DESTROYED the Padres tonight, knocking the team from San Diego completely out of playoff contention. In a merciful act of God, the entire team was then mercifully eaten by a shark.

In other news, it was a little disheartening to see the Padres get taken out of their game after four straight wins, but we still have room for a series win.

Or you know what else we could do that would be SO F_CKING FUN!?!?! Let's talk about the morale and ethical quandaries we face in our JOBS. Yeah! Let's talk about that shit, because we love talking about talking about death. That's right.... Our open thread not just talked about death... It was a conversation about talking about death. WTF. It was soooooo meta. SO MUCH FUN. If there's one thing that will make a losing game more fun, it's conversations like that.

Anyways. Go Padres.

First...

Wish I had seen the Dodgers – Giants game.

Second, I think the green Drama post above may be the post of the year.

Third, I want to beat this Morosi bastard viciously about the head and shoulders.

You know what's funny

You Drama lovers go back and READ their conversation.

“Should we be sad about murdered girls?”
“People like being sad when bad things happen to white girls.”
“It’s fake sadness.”
“It’s sadness.”
“Oh well. It’s our job.”
“Let’s all be sad an pitiful together because we’re forced to tell people about dead white girls.”

This is the HILARIOUS conversation that ya’ll are defending through your recs. HILARIOUS. Ya’ll are the sleepy ones if you believe Drama when he says THAT’S what Gaslamp Ball’s about. Being fake sad over dead white chicks and the reporters that sensationalize them. SUUUUUURE I love THAT conversation in the Open Threads.

Well, I just tried to go back and read the conversation

but it has vanished into thin air.

First off, in regard to it not being hilarious, it wasn’t meant to be. At least I’m not recalling any attempted humor; I can’t swear to everyone else’s intent but I can definitely say that’s not what I was shooting for. My point was that I find it bothersome that most of the population values some human lives over others for superficial reasons. I admit in retrospect that I could have worded it better; I can see how the way I put it out there could come off as calloused or even crass to some. For that, I apologize. I sometimes say or type things that I don’t realize could be crossing the lines of good taste and judgement until after the fact and other and in rarer times I have been guilty of making a concious attempt to push buttons or stir already-simmering sh!t; these are both serious character flaws. In this case, I wholeheartedly assure you that I was in no way trying to incite anything or score laughs and recs. It was an offhand remark that could have been stated more clearly or, probably better yet, not at all.

When you were taking exception to that subthread as it was going on, I thought I understood your reasoning and I agreed with you trying to divert people’s attention and comments elsewhere. I thought you just saw the conversation as being one with high potential for volatlity- especially since there had previously been notable tension between some of the participants- and your reason for wanting to stifle it was to make sure nothing escalated to the point of it getting personal or bullyish. That made sense to me because there were a couple of moments that seemed a little tense and had me worried that it was about to get ugly. However, all sides with differing points respected the validity of the other stance and even made the rare move of getting clarification about something that could otherwise be easily misconstrued and jumped on.

I know that this is your blog and since I respect you and your blog, I’ll gladly conform with your standards of what you want your readership exposed to. I love Gaslamp Ball and want to do my part to make the community here a good one that reflects the wishes and guidelines of the founders/ managers. The only problem impeding me from complying with this vision is that it’s so undefined. Of all the incidents, conversations, feuds, inappropriateness and just plain idiocy that I’ve witnessed and taken part in, I’m still amazed that this is the thing that got people called out on the carpet.

I can only speak for myself here...

But as someone who participated in the murdered white girls conversation, I can say that it was a little surprising to get such a public smackdown in this recap thread. I would have expected that, since you were in the OT, if the conversation had crossed into territory that you didn’t approve of, you would have said something then. I’ve seen this happen several times before and people are always respectful or your and jbox’s requests (i.e. the j_____t thing).

If my mom wanted me to stop peeing in the bed, I’d expect her to tell me to stop peeing in the bed, not wait until all my friends are over and then start calling me Little Sally Pissypants.

Yeah, I remember it being one sentence.

It blew my mind to see

Do not discuss politics, religion or any other topic unrelated to Padres baseball or San Diego sports.
Politics and religion, well, yeah, that makes perfect sense to me. But discussion of things unrelated to Padres baseball or San Diego sports is the lifeblood that makes GLB so appealing, family-like, unique and absolutely superior to every other blog. If this were enforced, there would be NO: double rainbows, Pokemon, drink checks, speaking ill of AL teams, mention of Jayson Werth unless we’re playing the Phillies, mention of Jeffrey Jay Gowan at all, skirts on the fanf, mentioning someone’s new avatar, asking about restaurants, music references unless they’re entrance or walk-up songs, mention of the NBA or NHL whatsoever, talking about your school unless it’s local and you are a student-athlete, quotes from TV shows or movies other than Anchorman, flirt lair, over three quarters of what wiggins has said, cleaning house, driveway shoveling, TWSS, well, you get the idea…

you know what that last bit is...

It’s CYA so we can get rid of it if it’s not appropriate.

Let’s be PERFECTLY honest. Everyone knows what we’re trying to avoid. And if we want to have Open Threads where it’s OK to talk about something like “Drama’s Flirt Lair” or another team getting “raped” or “murdered” then realize that some people (maybe only me) find conversations about actual rape and murder to be inappropriate.

I know you’re just making a point, but personally, I find it a little bit inappropriate to equate a discussion about crazy double rainbow guy to crazy guy who killed a chick. That’s just me.

I understand completely what you're saying.

The conversation was inappropriate for an OT. No problem. Point taken.

The issue I have is that, despite the subject matter being a little off-color, it really wasn’t meant to be an offensive or inflammatory conversation. Everyone respected each others view points and I don’t think anyone came away from that discussion with hurt feelings. (And really, we’re only talking about maybe 15-20 posts, right?)

The whole thing should have, and would have, died with that thread being closed.

Until we were hit with this:

Or you know what else we could do that would be SO F_CKING FUN!?!?! Let’s talk about the morale and ethical quandaries we face in our JOBS. Yeah! Let’s talk about that shit, because we love talking about talking about death. That’s right…. Our open thread not just talked about death… It was a conversation about talking about death. WTF. It was soooooo meta. SO MUCH FUN. If there’s one thing that will make a losing game more fun, it’s conversations like that.

That really sucked reading that. Was there not a better, maybe less inflammatory, way to get the point across that the subject was inappropriate? I mean, if the Guidelines are going to be thrown around here, how does that paragraph sit with this:

Do not… attack… or act condescendingly towards others.

It’s your blog and you make the rules… which I’m completely willing to follow. I just find it a little hard to believe that you don’t think there’s going to be at least a little blow back when you post something like that.

/ And now I’m done with this. I don’t like all this serious talk around here, either.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jul 21, 2010 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions   2 recs

I agree with this

I wasn’t part of the convo, but I watched it unfold. I stayed out merely out of disinterest, not because I knew it’s “what we’re trying to avoid.” There’s been worse discussion without this kind of reaction before.

The mentioning of the guidelines themselves is condescending, as if they were always there and aren’t open to interpretation. If they’re what we have to turn to, and to be taken seriously, they need some work.

Just looking for where the line is now, consistency, so I don’t find myself getting yelled at by the bus driver in front of everyone. I think we all just want to stand behind the line.
