Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Welcome to the Hall!

As we quickly approach the enshrinement of Andre Dawson into the Baseball Hall of Fame, I was quickly reminded of all the great players who may never get there for whatever reason. I remember hearing a radio personality refer to a "hall of the very good" where a lot these players should reside. This got me to thinking about some of the players who you believe belong in the hall of the very good but aren't quite great enough for the real Hall. I don't want to give my list away to see if anyone has the same thought pattern but suffice to say there are plenty who belong.

Steve Finley

Also Jaime Moyer. He’s the less-good version of the “Old Men”— Nolan Ryan and Satchel Paige. What he’s doing out there right now is pretty incredible when you think about it, though.

It’s tough to do this sort of list because the ones who have played/retired in the past 10-20 years you always have to think about steroids, minus a very few. And the ones who were good and weren’t roid-freaks are going to the Hall mainly because they’re the best of what’s left.

Good point

I totally agree, but nevertheless there are so many from the 70-early 90’s who I think about as wonderful players who are close to enshirement. I will mention one who always seems to come up; The Cobra.

Cammy

Benito, Bagwell, Maris, J.R. Richard, Cone, Vizquel, Kingman, Nettles, Dave Stewart, Albert Belle, Dennis Martinez, Concepcion and Dale Murphy, just to name a few off the top of my head.

Agreed

Love that Bagwell will be in the same boat at McGriff was last year, just shy of 500 so not a lock and with enough votes and support to stick around for a few years on the ballot. J.R. Richard is the reincarnation of Tony Conigliaro. Love the list!

Thank you.

It’s a really good topic.

Upon further analysis

I saw you mention Vizquel. Am I the only person who believes he will be rewarded as Ozzie Smith was when it comes time for the BBWA to vote for him. I thought he was closer to in than out.
