Should Padres Trade Tate for Hart, Bautista?
So far, Donavan Tate is looking oddly like Matt Bush for the Padres. Fortunately, Tate is still new enough that he is considered a top prospect still, as he was selected 3rd overall just a yearago. I'm thinking the Padres should be willing to hedge their bets on Tate, and deal him for an established bat we can use right now.
I see I'm not alone in thinking about this:
http://www.docsports.com/2010/mlb-trade-deadline-buyers-and-sellers-300.html
With Mat Latos looking like he should return as soon as he gets off the DL (short article at http://www.MatLatos.com ), the Padres could be pretty deadly if they can pick up another bat.
What do you guys think? Would you rather take a risk on Tate, or trade him in for a legit bat now - a guy like Corey Hart, or Jose Bautista? I'm saying take the proven talent when you can get it, and leave a guy that breaks his jaw riding ATV's in the offseason to be another team's project.

I voted that we try to trade him in a deal for Corey Hart
After seeing Corey Hart in the HRD, I just could not get over the Padres opportunity to get that kind of raw power in their lineup. Bautista seems to me like he may just be a product of his ballpark with his high home run totals.

Insane
This is insane on many levels. First comparing Tate and Bush is quite a reach. As far as I know Tate hasn’t been getting in bar fights, stealing from the owners box, or challenging parts of the county to fights. Second Tate has played something like 12 games in the minors and is doing OK for someone playing his first ball since high school, and is doing much better than Bush was at the same level.
Also, as mentioned they can’t trade Tate if the wanted to.
Lastly, does Mat Latos have anything to do with your site? If not, buying the domain name of someone’s name is pretty lame.

Oh boy....
Firstly YES I wouldn’t mind Tate being traded, if he could be. I’m not sold on him.
But NO NO NO NO to Hart or (especially!) Bautista. Both are playing over their heads, and they don’t fit the “mold” that outfielders (or infielders) need to be in Petco. As much as I think that the “Headley experiment” was a failure (or at best a sidestep), we need a more offensive hitter. I’m not saying Caminiti (and Mr. Anabolics) here, but something more along the lines of an Inge or a Jose Lopez on an average year.
Some pundit said something about Guthrie and Adam Jones for like Sampson, Venable, and Durango. I would jizz in my pants for that deal. Adam and I are from the same part of town, so you know I’m pulling for him lol.
Realistically DeJesus and Willingham are great fits, for different reasons. DeJesus has the speed, the glove and the hitting skills, and Willingham though not having as good outfield skills nor the speed, can RIP the ball into the corners and out of the park. The offense on that guy is just incredible. He is the perfect #4 to complement Gonzalez.
I’d also like Alex Rios, but he’s having WAY to good of a year to probably even get a trade. And Werth, for the same reasons I like Willingham.
It’s so nice that the Padres are GETTING good people this year instead of giving them all away.
Alex Rios is a no because of the salary and b/c the White Sox are in a pennant chase
I believe

Coulda sworn his salary was lowered
After the Jays cut him last year and presumably ate his contract, I thought the Sox re-signed him for less money. He’s still pie-in-the-sky though, so I wouldn’t speculate heavily on it. Willingham is my man.
Speaking of White Sox, as long as we DO NOT EVER IN OUR ENTIRE SPAN OF LIVING get Jermaine Dye, I think we are doing something positive. =)
Per ESPN and CBS, for this year it's $10,200,000
So I guess we could eat this year’s, but I don’t know about next year’s and I don’t think it’s worth it. My two cents

Hart scares me.
I feel like he is the poster child for sell high candidates and fear he will have a second half regression, especially in Petco.
WTF? Is this serious?

On your proposed options
Corey Hart
His stat line: .296/.356/.579
That stat line is pretty darn good, and his .397 wOBA is really good. He’s also been pretty solid for the past few seasons in regards to power, average in his stellar 2007. But he doesn’t fit the Padres mold and is due for some regression.
His .317 BABIP isn’t astronomical, but you’d figure that he’ll cool off a bit. His fielding is additionally poor and I don’t know if the bat makes him a substantially better replacement (WPA and WAR-wise). He just doesn’t have the complete skill set and tools we want for a legit Petco outfielder for the price he will command.
Bautista:
He sucks defensively, at 3rd and in LF. He sucks fielding, he’s due for regression batting (plus he’s with Toronto, where HR’s are so contagious that Yuni Escobar finally hit one), and Toronto will try and suck every piece they can get for us.
If we want one guy, it’s gonna be David DeJesus.
And we can’t even trade Tate right now, and it’s not fair to compare him to Bush. Bush is an idiot and was a disaster from the start, but Tate has recognizable potential and he just needs to be smarter.

Trade targets
I haven’t looked at stats, but guys off the top of my head that I’d like for this club:
from the Astros (via trade):
Hunter Pence: Cheap, hopefully is/will be a Type-A, many tools and lots of potential, legit. Will immediately strengthen our team, is due for a heavy regression up (his BABIP is tremendously low recalling from memory, around .270).
Jeff Keppinger: As close to David Eckstein as it can get, and is super versatile. I like him a lot, and he’s hungry to win having finally got his chance to start with the Astros.
Wandy Rodriguez: If I recall right, he strikes people out and had a good season last season. Petco should obviously help him, and he’s an immediate upgrade over KC, if not even a potential 3 starter, 2 if optimistic.
from the Cubs:
Marlon Byrd: Similar to Pence-type of move. Solid guy all the way around, and is a good bat to compliment the impact bat we have in Adrian. Leader too, and he’ll be happy to leave the Cubs I’m sure.
Ted Lilly: Mentioned previously so not much to say. Obligatory “he’s a competitor and is gritty.”
jtb yl1 thunder up tino
For the Adam Jones comment earlier. I find it very hard to pry him away.
However, getting him along with Guthrie would be fantastic. I’m still more along the lines of two separate trades, one for Guthrie. And another for Dejesus.
Once again. NO to Bautista,
And F_CK NO to Werthless.

This wasn't literally saying trading Tate was likely
I wanted to see the general consensus on what we all thought of Tate, and who we should try to trade for at the deadline.
The Source for Padres Ace Mat Latos News, Commentary, and Cards:
http://MatLatos.com
This seriously overestimates Tate's trade value
Which is extremely low right now. Its not good business to sell low especially in this case where there is absolutely no way that the return would be a major league. None. Zero. Zilch. At best Tate would be a throw in for those guys mentioned.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Padres don't need a bat OR an arm OR a glove.
Venable will be coming back rested, Blanks had an MRI and surgery is now “remote” and he hopes to be back this year, AND the team has averaged 5.61 runs in July, Allowing 4.08. In addition, the Padres are up to 402 runs. League average is… 402 runs. The team batting average has gone up to .253, just below league average, and has been on a home run binge, now with more home runs than the Mets or Dodgers.
The pitching staff still leads the MAJORS in ERA and WHIP, fewest runs scored, fewest wild pitches, and are third in strikeouts.
The defense is tied for the highest fielding percentage in the majors, has the second fewest errors and the second highest defensive runs saved above average.
This team is doing it all. There’s no improvement available that could be made without messing up something else. IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT.
Batting average sucks
At least you could use OBP. Otherwise a fairly compelling argument— it’s funny to see how everyone preaches pitching and defense yet writes us off, when we in fact have some of the best pitching and defense

Name floated around for the Yankees and he wouldn’t be unreasonable for us. We could get a double swoop by getting Jeff Keppinger too

I might get my butt kicked for this, but I see a lot of David Eckstein in Keppinger
He’s not stellar in terms of BA or OBP, but he’s good enough and he’s really good in higher-leverage situations it seems. Plus he’s a much better utility guy than someone like Omar Infante, at least in my opinion (without stats).

Well essentially he's a clone of Eck-- no Ks, similar OBP, a little better slugging
Not as good of a fielder but his versatility could be valuable. Plus he’s done well over the past month: http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=3856&position=2B/SS&season=2010

I don't see the point in adding someone like that to the team.
Especially when we have similar players on the roster. He won’t bring much of anything we don’t already have, and we’d have to give something up to get him.

I don't disagree
But I’m of the philosophy that we should try to add as many good players as possible, and if we could get him in a trade with the Astros (presumably for Myers), I’m all for it.
He’s a proverbial pest like Eck, and every good baseball team needs that. Maybe it’ll help if we have 25 of those. Just a name I like, and he wouldn’t command anything in a larger trade package

I took a look at FanGraphs and you're right
Although he did have a good season in 2007 if I recall right and his WAR was almost 3? You’re right about Hairston having a similar profile to Keppinger, although I just like him for a reason.
I’ve had my eye on him when he was in Cincy and he’s just finally broken into the starting lineup with the Astros. Plus when I finally chose to pick him up this season for my main fantasy team, I jumped for a 100 points deficit to 500 points ahead, so I guess I’m biased.
Would definitely be a good extra player IMO, and he’s old enough not to be part of the Astros’ future.

With you 100%
We’ll see how this 2nd 6-game road-trip of the month goes: no need to rush anything, as everything you say you’ve backed up.
I wouldn’t count on Blanks helping much, but I think both Venable and Scott Hairston will be contributing significantly in the near future.
Latos will be back before the end of the month. Have you noticed Correia’s strike-out totals the last few starts? — Jury’s still out on him, but it seems as though he has turned a corner; if he can’t get it done in Pittsburgh, we might need another SP before the deadline…. We’ll also see how Leblanc does tomorrow against a tough club. Stauffer has been totally under-utilized since his recall.
