Padres defeat Diamondbacks 8-5

Clayton Richard really tried not to win tonight. He was leaving stuff out over the plate. Runners were scoring. He was kinda like, "I just want to be me! LET ME BE!" But the Padres are not here to cater to losers. They are here to win and that's pretty much what they did.

Play of the game has to be Anthony Keith Gwynn Jr's inside-the-park home run. D-Back's left fielder Rusty Ryal made a valiant diving effort for a shot along the left field line... and missed. And pretty much if an outfielder misses a ball that gets to the wall and there's nobody backing it up, Tony Gwynn is going to f_ckin' infinity and beyond.

Padres go for the sweep tomorrow.

Oh P.S. Remember like just before the All-Star Break how Rockies and Dodgers fans were like, "Well, it was a nice run Padres, but we're gonna go ahead an pass you in the second half of the season now. Really, you have no chance."

Rockies last three games: L, L, L. Dodgers last three: L, L, L. I like to substitute the commas for "O"s when I read that line.

GO PADRES!!!

In games I’ve gone to. Opening day, CunningSlams’ grandslam game, eckstein bobblehead night, and now hat night. If everyone on GLB pitches in, I’ll go to every game for the rest of the season! Eh? EH?

I foolishly told on myself for being in Dub-V

so she gave them to RJ’s Fro, who came in second. If I happen to win anything else of the sort in the future, I’ll remember that you have dibsies!

I'm not doing too bad myself

I’ve got a 5 game winning streak and I started with a 5 game winning streak. I just had 4 losses in between (Dodgers, Dodgers, Nationals and Mets).

Since I got the Padres scarf we’re 5-0 and it comes to every game (so clutch). It’s going to be tough to wear Sunday though.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I have this feeling

That if the Padres start pulling away out of the break (like they are starting to do) then they become like the 2007 Rays (the scrappy team everyone is pulling for), and if they fall back into the pack they stay the team that everyone thinks just got lucky for a while.

We aren't the 2008 Rays.

We are the 2010 Padres.

The Rays fell flat in the Series.

WE WILL F_CKING WIN!

I didn't say we'd play like the Rays

I was saying that we’d get the Rays treatment. I’ve already seen one fan say that he’s rooting for the Padres since his team is out of it. That’s what people (including many Gaslamp Ballers) did with the Rays in 2008.

Comparing our record to the Rays is silly. The Rays had to win an insane amount of games because they are in a division with the Red Sox and Yankees. Plus, like was said: We aren’t the 2008 Rays.

I was just thinking that maybe the tone of the message surrounding the Padres would change from: “Aw, how cute that these nobodies are sticking around? The Rockies/Dodgers will pass them soon for good because the Padres don’t have the talent to keep up. But good effort for getting this far.”

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Actually, if you go back to ~ Jul 18, 2008...

While the rays had played 5 more games than the 2010 padres as of today, the winning percentage of the two is exactly the same:
2008 Rays: 56-39, .589
2010 Pads: 53-37, .589

If Portland wins tomorrow

It’ll be their third series win of the season….
I can’t decide if I should laugh at how terrible they are, or cry since these kids are part of the Padres future.

Its find to laugh at Portland

Most AAA players are not apart of the teams future. They are insurance in case s___ hits the fan (i.e. Denorfia) or prospects who are blocked (i.e. Cunningham and Frieri). The future players are mostly in AA and lower. That’s how the minors work these days.

Anyone else think Tony

Gwynn seemed pretty slow around the bases? Maybe it’s the baggy jersey, maybe it’s the stutter step around third, but he looked like he could have easily been thrown out.
But hey! Padres Win!

he lost a step between third and home

I think he got a bit winded. But unless it’s a really baaaad job of fielding the ball (but not bad enough for the error) they’re probably gonna have a shot at throwing you out no matter what. The relay was bad, but that was a ball in the corner, which is 80 feet closer than a ball in the gap.

by abara on Jul 18, 2010 4:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I think

You underestimate how fast you have to be just to get around those bases and get a chance to score on that play. Sure, he didn’t pace himself right and stumbled on his way. That did slow him down, but the speed he took into taking 1st and 2nd was plenty fast and that’s what set up him up to score on that play.

Padres sporting another winning month (7-5). 90 games in and Pads still not folding the tent. Need a sweep today for added padding when cold winds blow again.
