Padres beat the Diamondbacks like a billion to 3

The Diamondbacks actually only scored 1, but I'm sure they'll take solace in the little things, like not actually losing by a billion, which count for something.

In other news, it was a beating that the Padres laid down on the Diamondbacks to put us up by 3 full games in the West and be like, "I think we want to hang onto first for a while." So good.

As a note, Ernesto Frieri finished the 9th and threw some really ridiculous stuff. I love that the Padres are like, "we'll put some dudes on the DL and, oh dear, who can pitch for us?" And then the guy that pitches for them is sending 95 mph cut fastballs and ridiculous looking slurves to finish the game Like A Boss.

Good job fulfilling my prediction, Padres. Let's sweep this series.

GO PADRES!!!

Final - 7.16.2010 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R

Frieri worried me a bit

He’s going to need more than a fastball to survive in this league and he kept shaking off Hundley with his secondary stuff. He’ll be fine for now with velocity, movement and deception, but I’m not sure he’ll be all that good if we keep him up for a long period of time. We’ll see, maybe his secondary stuff just wasn’t on tonight.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

by Wonko on Jul 16, 2010 11:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Meh

Not a lot of need for secondary pitches when you’ve got a 11 point lead in the ninth. He just wanted to come in, throw a few fastballs and get out.

I really like his confidence and mound presence. He clearly has no fear of throwing the fastball. Better than his movement was his command. Great location on his pitches. He only threw a couple of curves and hung one of them though. We’ll see how he fares in closer games when he needs a swinging strikeout but he’s on the right track. Trust your stuff, throw good strikes and it’ll set up the breaking stuff later.

Mariano Rivera only had one really good pitch

and that worked fine for him. Frieri’s fastball is absolutely electric, and the offspeed looks serviceable. Closers don’t need too many pitches.
