San Diego Padres Fan Confidence Poll: 7/13/2010
We forgot to vote our fan confidence yesterday.
If any week has dropped my confidence in the Padres, it's this past week. How could it not? The starting pitching has been sketchy, the bullpen has been iffy, injuries have been a plenty and the opponents have been red hot. Last week the Padres went 2-4 and dropped to a one game lead in the west.
It's not all bad though, the Padres offense has been battling back from behind and made every game a nail biter until the end. Plus they are still in first place.
Vote your confidence.
The rules are simple. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no confidence at all, 10 being absolute confidence, How confident are you in the San Diego Padres organization?
"Confidence" is just about anything you want to interpret it as. The front office, the future prospects, the play on the field, the park, etc etc etc

Although the 2-4 road trip seems to have dropped some people’s confidence.

Went from 8 to 7. A shaky Judy for the rest of the season would scare me.

I voted 9.
We don’t play those damn Rockies until September. So I am good.

Still at 9.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

If we’re struggling against the Rockies, how are we supposed to beat the Braves? The Cardinals? The (may-not-be-there-at-the-end) Reds?
I feel like as we reach the summer, our pitching staff is starting to tire out, we don’t have any sort of hitting to cover our more-frequent pitching errors (AHEM Correia), and our AAA “fresh legs” are even worse than who we have now.
Since we haven’t made a trade for a right-handed big bat or a durable, steady pitcher (I think we’ll need both to make a run), I give my Padres a “5” for “heading to .500”.
I could point out
That the Rockies were pretty much the hottest team in baseball going into the break. Not being able to beat a team that’s rolling is hardly a sign that you can’t beat other good teams. Especially when your team is playing through a couple of injuries and isn’t at their best. Maybe its a sign that the Rockies are better than the Padres, but I’d also posit that its a sign that the Rockies are better than the other teams you mention (Braves, Cardinals, Reds). At least for the time being.

Not only that
But it’s not like they blew us out of the water either – all three games were close, and we weren’t that far from taking the series. That said, the health of the pen concerns me a bit.
I stayed on 7, which I’ve been at since May, up from a lousy six. I’m more used to living with disappointment than success, and don’t want to ‘mozz’ (Aussie for jinx) them either.

We've played a ton of close games
against all three of our big divisional rivals. I’d argue that our 4-8 and 1-4 records against the Rockies and Dodgers are just as fluky as our 7-1 record against the Giants—a bunch of close games where one side of the other has been lucky to have the ball bounce their way.
I would expect us to do worse against the Giants in the second half, but better against the Rockies and Dodgers.

Definitely agree that the Rockies are hot right now
But it seems a lot like we’re running out of steam. Maybe after this break we’ll pick it up, but the only person who is doing extremely well right now is the one we’re resting (Latos). Garland needs some help, Correia needs help. Richard is doing alright and LeBlanc has been a nice surprise as of late. I’d say when the first two are pitching, we have about a one in four chance of winning, the second two, fifty-fifty. That’s still not a good total percentage when you add them together.
I just hate being this guy:

Especially when I’ve rooted for the Padres all my life and WANT them to do well. But in the past two weeks where we have been struggling to win a series (we almost tied to the Astros, lost two series to the Rockies, one to the Nationals), it’s at the very least a sobering wake-up call for everyone who is thinking we’re going to cruise into the playoffs, and maybe into the Championship Series, without any effort.
8... and I probably will be until sometime next offseason.
Maybe it’s just the way I interpret the question:
The rules are simple. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no confidence at all, 10 being absolute confidence, How confident are you in the San Diego Padres organization?
“Confidence” is just about anything you want to interpret it as. The front office, the future prospects, the play on the field, the park, etc etc etc
It’s asking about the organization. And then goes on to further explain that the organization includes the front office, prospects, play on the field, the park, etc, etc, etc. The way I see it, this question encompasses a whole lot of variables, but really only one that changes on a weekly basis: play on the field.
I love the direction that this club is headed in. I have faith in the new ownership. I trust Jed Hoyer to make the right moves. I think there’s some good young talent both in the majors and in the minors. I like that the payroll is likely on its way back up. I love PETCO Park. I love Tony Gwynn, Tom Garfinkle, Doc Roberts, Mark Grant, Jenny Cavnar, Steve Quis, Mark Neely, Scanman, Jerry Coleman, and on and on and on.
Those things don’t change on a week-to-week basis. Really it’s just the play on the field that might very slightly sway the way I feel each week… but I’m still pretty solidly with the eight zone.
So, yeah, I’m an eight. And unless something very big happens (good or bad) through the end of the season, I’ll likely be eight from here on out.

Okay, all you 6s and 7s - SHAPE UP!
The last thing we need is you Nervous Nellies getting scurred or wallowing in anticipated disappointment over a couple series. It’s a long season with lots of ups and downs, and if you’re not all-in for the duration, you may as well go watch lawn bowling in Balboa Park. Ya gotta live up to the term FAN and stick with the team through thick and thin. If you’re the sensitive type, put your feelings in your back pocket, cuz this ain’t no regular bandwagon you can hop on and off of, this is a LEAN, MEAN, FAN MACHINE!

but a low 8, i was at a high 8 like an 8.8 and now i’m at like an 8.1 or so, trying not to let one road trip sway too much

Though my desire for the team to win goes all the way to 11, it’s still a relief/surprise every time they win

so 10 it is. It’s all about the interpretation.

Homer: No, I'm not! I'm hopping on the bandwagon. Now, come on, son. Get with the winning team.

Gotta figure we can keep battling and winning at least half of our close games

Down a notch to a 7
A 4-2 road-trip might have pushed me up to a 9, whereas a 3 and 3 one probably would have kept me at an 8 (unless the 3 losses had all been at the hands of the Rockies).
Yes, we were in all the games and in all but one of the losses showed resilience offensively, but except for Latos (who was huge) and Leblanc, the starting pitching was shaky, and the bullpen had its problems, too; Adams and Gregerson have been terrific on the whole, but it remains to be seen if Gregerson has righted his ship, and we don’t yet know the extent of Adams’ injury….
I expect the offense to be better after the break than it was through the first 88 games, but if we expect the offense to make up for weakening pitching [the way the last game in Colorado was salvaged (thanks, also, to a REALLY bad play by the Rockies’ pitcher], I don’t think that’s the way we’re going to make the play-offs; it might be the way to play .500 the rest of the way, but that’s not going to be good enough — even for the wildcard.
But with a return to the good pitching and even a slightly improved offense we WILL be in the post-season.
