Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

The great Jeff Pearlman also has a long-standing history of speaking out against the whirlwind of dickishness that is Jayson Werth. In fact, his lede in this piece is "If you’ve read this blog before, you know Jayson Werth is one of my least-favorite professional athletes. He’s one of those guys who, for some odd reason, thinks that holding an ill-fitting leather glove and wearing red-and-white pajamas to work gives him the right to crap on people" and goes from there.

I would have done the same thing Werth did

an extra innings game with 2 outs, and a fan gets in your way…how would you react?!

I would be absolutely fine with the Padres acquiring Werth this month, although it’s not going to happen. He’s too good a player.

There are plenty of good players out there who are not sacks of crap.

Bart: But, dad, you're giving in to mob mentality.
Homer: No, I'm not! I'm hopping on the bandwagon. Now, come on, son. Get with the winning team.

How would I react?

I’d realize it’s part of the game and that a foul ball into the stands is fair game for anyone. I’d realize the fans are looking up at the ball, not at me, and so if they happen to get in my way, that’s just the game.

If I’m an infielder, and I’m trying to make a play and I run into the ump, am I going to bitch the ump out for getting in the way? No, it’s part of the game and I’m going to suck it up and deal with it.

I'd probably mutter obscenities to myself under my breath.

And I’d let the crowd punish that fan for the rest of the game. Fellow Phillies fans could have done enough damage to that guy’s self-esteem without Werth’s douchery.

I need new pants.

You upset a lot of checkerboards in your time?

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

if that guy was a true fan

he would have been paying attention to the situation and let Werth get the ball. Think of yourself in that situation. If Venable was going after that ball, and you know he’d catch it, I would do everything in my power to enable him to get that ball. Why?- because I’m a huge Padres fan, and seeing this team win is the main reason I’m at the ballpark. If the Padres lose, I’m a sad man.

And besides, Werth said a few words as he was running back into position. He didn’t get into the fan’s face. He simply reacted naturally and went on with the game. Like it or not, cursing is a big part of this game. It’s in the same league as spitting, chewing tobacco, and taking a nasty spiked slide into 2nd. Sure Werth wasn’t classy, but he didn’t go overboard.

Exactly

Wanna shield your son? Move him out of the way and don’t put your hand up to block the fielder
