Padres fight off the challenge, go into the break alone in first place
Another crazy game. Another test. ANOTHER WIN!!!
With the win, the Padres get to the All-Star Break alone in first place. We are bad at sharing. NO SHARING. MY FIRST PLACE. MINE.
I can't wait for the second half of the season. It's been a battle so far this year and all signs point to the fight continuing through the rest of the year. I want more pitching and defense.
I think the best of it was the extreme hush that fell over the crowd after Heath Bell got the final out in the ninth. It was almost like the opposite of noise, which I guess is quiet.
Padres put up a bunch of hits to get the win. The Amazing Hairston Brothers had 7 hits, a couple of RBIs and 3 runs between them. Aaron Cunningham had himself a couple of doubles. I like the Sneaky Pig nickname. Who came up with that one? So good.
In not good news, Mike Adams strained an oblique during the 8th. Get well soon, Mike.
FIRST PLACE PADRES!!! DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY!!!

Solid offense (Malcolm Byrd, Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Theriot, Derek Lee when he’s not injured) Cy Young-type starter (Carlos Zambrano) and good arms to back him up (Carlos Silva, Ryan Dempster) and they’re in 4th……

Compared
to Fukodome, Aramis Ramirez, and the other sub-par bitters they have in the lineup, I would consider Theriot an above-average player for the Cubs.
You’re totally right about Zambrano. That, and the clubhouse, not to mention the fans, are just about through with his BS.

That's why Ted Lilly would be a good trade target.
If Moorad et al are willing to take on his salary, we should be able to give them very little, they’re so desperate for relief.

In my ideal world, we'd trade for Ryan Zimmerman, Sean Doolittle
and promote Robert Portier and get Casey Lambert. And trade for Mark Reynolds and stick him in RF. We’d be pretty good if that happened, actually haha.

On Ted Lilly
Perhaps a fanpost later, but anyway:
Lilly isn’t particular impressive, but a new challenge at Petco could be beneficial. His FIP is 4.73, xFIP is 4.75, BABIP is .257— not impressive at all, but I think we all know that Lilly’s getting older and he’s known for being a gritty competitor.
He had a good stretch when he first returned after the surgery with a 3.12 ERA over his first 13 starts, but his 3-8 and 4.082 ERA make you scream meh. The 1.1546 WHIP isn’t terrible though, so we could probably get him on the cheap— he’d still be a good boost in our rotation.
Your theSabre.com extraordinaire (in pissing you off of course)-- I'm nice in real life though, I promise
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 12, 2010 7:00 AM PDT up reply actions
The point is to make an upgrade at a manageable cost.
There aren’t really any starters available that can come in and provide a huge impact now that Cliff Lee is off the market.
Lilly is an extreme flyball pitcher, and pitching in spacious Petco and in front of our great outfield defense should help him be at least an effective starter. Even if all he displayed was that 4.08 ERA he’s had in the last month or so would be an improvement over Kevin Correia, which is what we should be looking for right now.

meaning we’d get a first round pick and a first round supplemental pick in next year’s draft should he not re-sign with the Padres, which is an added bonus.
