Adrian Gonzalez hits two home runs and breaks up Hamels' no hitter

So there we were... being no hit by Heidi's husband Cole Hamels into the 6th inning. ESPN and Foulweather fans were getting giddy.. Adrian Gonzalez then steps to the plate and casually hits a home run into the flower bed that for some reason is planted out above the left field wall. TA-DOW!  There goes the no hitter and here come the Padres.

Next up Scott Hairston is swinging crazy for the fences without much success and then suddenly he makes contact and puts one into the left centefield seats.  Back to back, Jack.

Next time through the order either Channel 4 is showing a replay or Adrian Gonzalez hits the exact same homer putting the ball in the same flower bed in front of the same tight t-shirt wearing guys.  Crasy.

Everything is fine until the bottom of the 9th when Heath Bell starts struggling.  Foulweather fans start salivating but the Padres pull off an important win.  The series?  They split that bitch.

Confidence rating becoming more confident.

Go Padres!

Only problem with prep picks is that it takes awhile for them to develop, so they have all kinds of time to get hurt and suck.

High school kids are considered more likely to get hurt.

Because they’re less used to bigger workloads, haven’t fully developed, etc.

I would suggest that when you get a high school

player you can manage his work load with an eye towards the bigs. A college coach on the other hand, is only concerned with the now and may be less likely to manage his work load.

Thats why I would be less inclined to pick up college pitchers,

but would be ok with position players.

bit of history

When the Padres became a Major League team, it was, in part to ensure that the Dodgers had other teams to play within the region. However, since they didn’t truly want to COMPETE with the new team within the region, they made sure, with the help of the commissioners office that the Padres front office would basically be stocked with former Dodger brass.

As a result, certain expansion draft picks were not made and the Padres front office for YEARS essentially catered to the Dodger whim resulting in at least 10 years of Padres struggles that didn’t necessarily need to be.

He’s not making any money of consequence, seems that he can still field a corner outfield position well, and he wouldn’t be any worse than Venable at the plate, with potential for much more.

Best possible case scenario for the Padres

They’d need him once in the NLDS, twice in the NLCS, twice in the WS. Unlikely, but possible. That’s 5 starts.

He’s currently averaging about 6 innings per starts. If we say he has a 150 IP limit, that means he has about 14 starts left of 25 total.

That means he can only make 9 more in the regular season if they want him available for the max in the post-season, because he has 11 starts right now. That would mean they’d have to skip about 13 turns in the rotation, assuming 34 starts.

Wonko was talking about this a while ago.

They are probably taking a flexible approach to his limit, based on his history and their knowledge of his physical condition.

I don't see them happening.

More than likely they will let him pitch until he is done for the season and worry about this rest later.

by field39 on Jun 7, 2010 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they'll skip him at least a few times.

They said they were going to try.

I assume their preference would be

to stretch him enough to reach expanded rosters. That way they can avoid the roster slot issue. That being said. How do you skip him if he is pitching well.

by field39 on Jun 7, 2010 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It's easy.

You have Garland start instead of him.

Yeah it would make most sense...

to just pitch him till they want to shut him down… by that time there will be expanded rosters… then give him September off and see if he is rested enough to start in the post-season.

We would start

Garland, Richard, and Corriea/Wade…. not bad… only need 3 starters in the post-season.

Just finished watching the game on DVR

Good win. ESPN was getting all giddy with Hamels and his no hitter but then blam…Adrian HR, very nice.

ESPN actually had some pretty nice things to say about us, not that it matters but it is nice to get SOME recognition nationally.
