Padres drop close game to Phillies

I'm a little shocked we lost.  I fully expected the Padres to come back and win that game.  I guess you can't win them all, but it always kind of weirds me out when we don't.

  • Padres had the bases loaded in the 8th with one out and Chris Denorfia grounded into a double play.
  • Will Venable was pulled from the game with what appeared to be a neck injury.
  • Anthony Gwynn Junior had a couple hits with an RBI
  • Adrian Gonzalez had the other RBI with a sac fly.
  • Thought Mat Latos pitched pretty well, but he did walk in a run.
  • Pads were 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

yeah, never been one to use such things,

but am finding it to be a bit more convenient than trying to get the nutrients among my daily endeavors. Lucky to have such options.

We lost to Halladay.

Whatever. It’s baseball. You will lose games. Win tomorrow.

by Drama on Jun 4, 2010 8:32 PM PDT reply actions

Take some positives out of it

Most teams are completely shut down by Halladay, we definitely made him sweat by getting so many hits. We also had our rookie pitcher by and large shut down one of the best lineups in baseball

Yea I was bummed we lost but we can't win them all

Latos made a couple mistakes but also did some nice things with 6ks (with 2 each to Howard and Werth).

Hoping we bounce back today and get the W.

Don't look now

but Kouzmanoff’s offensive numbers are at least in the same neighborhood’s(SLG%/OPS) as Headley’s. To think we kept both and gave away Freese.

If kouz were playing 1/2 his games in Petco he would be sucking balls.

Those two recent HR’s he got were lobbed over that baseball joke called the green monster.

It's funny

but I rarely see Headley even hit the ball hard enough or square up to even drive a ball out, anywhere, let alone “lob” one over the green monster.

still not all that close

but gap has narrowed significantly to where I would be frustrated enough to even posit the comparison. Headley probably a bust and we have to deal with it the whole year. It sucks.

If Headley fails to improve as the season progresses

then I may agree with you. But he showed way too much ability in the minor leagues to be this poor a hitter.

What cost us was the mistake to Victorino.

I feel like the single to Halladay and the clusterf*ck of walks in the 5th were worse

You are gonna give up a long ball in Philly here and there.

by MrDanielX on Jun 4, 2010 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

The single to Halladay was just bad luck--he got a ground ball that managed to find a hole. It happens.

But you’re right in that the walks, along with the home run, were what killed us. That’s in a pitcher’s control, and Latos showed his youth.

I’m wondering if giving up the homer made him nervous and caused him to lose some of his control, or perhaps nibble a bit too much.

Latos pitched well enough to win -

What cost us is obviously the fact that we can’t score runs.

amend

Wasn’t able to watch whole game. Latos was indeed a bit off today – with this offense and margin being so tight is usually not good enough.

Padres 2010 Ole'

by texpadre on Jun 4, 2010 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I've always wondered what "well enough to win" means.

He walked 4, including walking in a run, and gave up a homer in 5 innings pitched. That’s not that great.

He was good the first time through the lineup, but then started to lose his control, with obviously the big mistake to Victorino.

Would you have liked to score more? Sure. But many lineups struggle to score any runs against Halladay, let alone 2. Heck, I was surprised we scored at all.

To Mat's credit though

he got 6 Ks, which was one of the reasons he was able to limit the damage and only surrender 3 runs.

Because maybe

Mr Joyce doesn’t ump our games?

So far watching this team has been much more enjoyable over past incarnations. They always “feel” as if they can win games, instead of the past “tanker squads”, and that’s a huge improvement.

But on the flip side these are the kind of games you have to win more often than not if you want to maintain, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Latos acted like he wasn’t feeling well. At about 50% of his last appearance. If he’d been his usual self 2 runs would have been enough to win it. Nobody bats 1000.

by Big Bang Hunter on Jun 4, 2010 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

We should take heart in the fact

that Halladay is by far their best pitcher. Moyer, Blanton, and Hamels aren’t nearly as good. We’ll score more, and hopefully our pitching staff will come out on top.

Dodgers ended the Braves losing streak

So we still have the most wins in the NL (3 way tie with 32), but the Dodgers pick up a game.

DBacks came through and walked off the Rockies. Who is scared of a purple dinosaur anyway?

In Arizona's defense

Colorado tried really hard to lose. The DBacks struck out twice with the bases loaded in the 8th before coming through with a HBP and 3 hits in the 9th.
