Padres score 13 runs, Clayton Richard strikes out 10
I wasn't able to follow the game, but it looks like everybody that was disrespecting Bud Black and his line up before the start of the game has some crow to eat.
“As soon as we came in the clubhouse after the game we said ’same lineup (tomorrow)!’,” said a grinning Jerry Hairston Jr., who contributed two RBI and two runs scored.
And for those of us that missed the game, we'll never know what happened. It's not for us to know. In our imaginations there will be running, jumping, hitting, fielding and delights beyond measure. We can only guess that the 13 runs were scored using magic or sorcery. It's the only explanation that makes any sense.
Go Padres!
P.S. Happy Birthday Buddy Black.

Dear Mr. Kipper,
I checked out the ems store last night, and it looks like they have everything but jerseys at the point, but I asked about them, and they said they would be getting some in soon.

Thanks for the info
It’s kind of hard finding Ems gear online. I did see this old Ems hat at Ebbet’s Field Flannels in Seattle. Pretty cool.
I will eat no crow
#BudBot still did not put out an appropriate lineup today.

I'm guessing this refers to starting Denorfia
since the rest of the decisions were more of the give guys a day off variety.
Why do you have a problem with starting Denorfia against a lefty? He’s probably a better hitter against lefties than Gwynn and Venable (just eyeballing it from the rest of season projection ZiPS on fangraphs and applying a platoon split). He, Hairston, Venable, and Cunningham all seem to have similar defensive reputations as good corner outfielders and slightly below average center fielders. Seems like a good decision by Bud to me.
My main problem is playing him in CF
And playing him over TGJr.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Scott Hairston has actually been
A better CF than a corner OF. This year he’s well above average in CF and below average in LF. Jerry Hairston Jr. has also been a plus defensive OF in some small stints out there.
Denorfia should be one of the last choices for CF. He’s got a lot of evidence saying that he is a below average CF.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
The principle is
That it shows a lack of understanding of some basic elements of putting your team in the best situation to win. And doing that right after you basically sabotaged your team the night before for the same reason is irritating.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Correct to be irritated by Bud's putting in Mujica Tuesday
But I think you MAY have let that irritation affect your feeling about Denorfia. You may have good evidence (and knowing your comments both from here and BFTB, I’m sure you do) about his not being up to snuff as a CF, but I saw him play a very nice CF in a day game against the Blue Jays a couple weeks ago, and he apparently made some good plays out there yesterday, too.
Agree that Scott has been a better CF than LF, but maybe even if he’s a better CF than Denorfia, he’s also better than Denorfia in LF — and by a wider margin….
Adrian’s shoulder hasn’t been right for a couple days, so with the day game following the night game and against a lefty, it was a good call to give him the day off for sure…. With him out of the line-up, no Padres line-up is going to instill fear in anyone (if it even could WITH him in there), but if you (all) have noticed, the Padres mediocre hitters can sometimes hit mediocre pitching well, and they often hit bad pitchers VERY well….
One day game. Nice evidence.
I know the numbers are perfect, but they seem to be consistent. Denorfia is a better LF than Scott Hairston and Scott Hairston is a better CF than Denorfia (by a lot). And even if Hairston were a better LF than Denorfia, I’d still want the better CF in CF. It’s really important.
Or, you could just put Tony Gwynn out there and leave Denorfia as the reserve AAAA player he’s meant to be.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Never claimed my anecdotal "evidence"
was better than whatever you’ve got — or even that it was “evidence” at all. I stated what I did, gave credit for your expertise (which I do believe you have) and pretty much just posited some ideas.
In this thread, however, your evidence is just opinion, as right as it may be, as it’s not backed up with the stats to which you refer. I think you meant to say the stats “are not perfect,” but that they’re consistent. I’ll take your word for it, as you’re a good numbers guy, so far as I’ve seen (both on GLB and BFTB), and also a good evaluator of talent….
I wonder if the sample size on the numbers is just pretty small when it comes to Denorfia, since he hasn’t played that much in his career. Not for a second trying to say he’s a better CF than Scott H., but if there were that big of a discrepancy, how do you do explain Black making THAT big of a mistake, given that it IS very important who’s in CF…?… (Obviously I agree: everyone would, including the Padres skipper.)
Something doesn’t add up, for Black’s not a dumb manager in the least; I’ve second-guessed and “first-guessed” managers for decades, and Black makes far fewer off-base moves than just about anyone I can think of. Sure he was a pitcher, and he knows pitching and his pitchers best, but he clearly couldn’t have thought the discrepancy between the two guys is as much as you or the numbers say…. (Well, at least on THAT DAY…?…)
Maybe there’s “evidence” (perception and/or backed up by numbers) from spring training that informed his decision?… Didn’t see a single spring training game, so that hypothesis could be blown out of the water…. Maybe Hairston had had his hammy worked on a little extra the night before, but not enough to keep him out of the line-up…. Differences between day and night games?… Grasping at straws here, but I’d give BB the benefit of the doubt, rather than believing he was that clueless. (But maybe he was.)
Obviously, defensively, Gwynn, Jr. would be out there, but the lefty Francis was starting, Black likes to get his players rotated in, and Denorfia hadn’t played much on the Florida roadtrip…. That still doesn’t explain why he wasn’t in LF, though.
We may never know…. And in fact, the only way we might ever know would be to ask Black.
I dont' agree with one thing you say here.

i stand by my comment about the line-up
9 times out of 10 that line-up will not score 13 runs. But hopefully every time BudBot sends them out and I whine about it they will come up big.

There probably is a fairly simply way to calculate the odds for that linwup scoring 13 runs
But I’m too lazy to do it.

Even the Padres weak hitters
have not infrequently feasted on poor pitching…. The key to the game may have been that Francis wasn’t up to snuff; that may have been true regardless, but didn’t he get hit on the arm by a line drive in the 1st inning?… Maybe that doomed him, and then they got so far behind, that we got the struggling Franklin Morales and Manny Corpas to boot….
Some teams’ back-end guys make it look like we’re lucky to have Mujica and Gallagher in their positions in our pen….
Clayton Richard has immensley improved himself as a pitcher.
I think he’s outgrown his label as a “#4-5 starter”.

Now about Porreda…….

Such an impressive game by the Padres today!
Scoring 13 runs with no home runs (& no A-Gon in the lineup) was quite a sight to see. Clayton Richard was fantastic! The way he stormed out of the gates and struck out the side in the first was an eye opener. Most importantly, the 4,000 screaming little kids from day camp in attendance gave Petco Park a playoff like atmosphere which I have not seen for quite a long time.

I mentioned attendance at the end of the OT
24,519 was the total today. That’s more than Monday or Tuesday and is by far our largest weekday day game. It probably helps that kids are out of school.

How many more times can Russell be brought up and sent down?
The answer to that question being rather an important factor, I agree with you.
If Stauffer’s ready, maybe he could replace Mujica….
I believe in a player’s first year they can be brought up and sent down an infinite amount of times.
