    Happy

I must say I was happy with the game, although we lost, I thought us coming back from being in a no-no situation we scored some runs on Jimenez. I thought Gallagher and Mujica are sore spots in our bullpen and IM DONE with Correia. Please Stauffer come back and we may trade Correia for some better starting pitching.

    It was really close too

The Padres either did their homework on that one or got really lucky. Of course, it won’t really matter if he can’t hit.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I think they did their homework

Remember, his delayed call up helped stoke the fires of the Savior movement.

    Yup

they said they were waiting for a low pressure moment to bring him up. Then they called him up, and his first game was the 3 game series at Yankee Stadium with 40 Padre FO people in the stands. Nope, no pressure there.

by strummer on Jun 29, 2010 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

    Maybe

It’s just that this year’s cut off was a lot different from year’s past. They would have had to analyze every player that got called up and assess the chances that those players wouldn’t get sent back down. There’s got to be a little luck involved in that.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

    I guess Headley's a special case

cuz they tried to hide him in the outfield, so he had a better chance to stay up with this team than what I would guess is the average player. Kouz’s struggles last season and the rotating corners in the outfield left him a lot of room.

Then again, maybe they didn’t know he was going to stay up and just erred on the side of caution. I swear this was the conclusion we came to when he was finally called up, just haven’t done any digging to verify what I’m remembering. Something like they were holding him because money was going to be tight in the future and calling up him a week before that deadline wouldn’t have made much of a difference for the team at the time.

That’s correct. There is no other way to interpret what they were doing. In hindsight, it was smart. At the time, it was completely frustrating. It’s really hard to be forward thinking when all you could see were a bunch of old ball players blowing goats.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

    The Ecker is invaluable

and I imagine that his experience and insight are of tremendous help to the younger guys.

Though it must be said that these younger guys also know how to win, as some of them were on that Texas League championship team a few years back. In his book “The Bullpen Gospels”, Dirk Hayhurst makes mention of the players on that Missions’ team forgetting all about stats and individuality and coming together as a team to win it all.

    Stauffer

I don’t understand what’s going on with Stauffer. I thought they were getting him to the point where his pitch count was high enough to start. No?

He has started five games for Portland. Going 2.0 IP, 2.0, 1.1and then 5.0 and his last start on June 23rd was 6.1 innings. But then last night they had him pitch one inning…the 4th inning. He gave up 3 hits and 2 ER with one K.

Did they do that because he’s regressed? Or because they plan on bringing him up?

by Drama on Jun 29, 2010 10:01 AM PDT reply actions

They are trying to confuse the suck,

in hopes that it will remain behind in Portland.

Yeah, what did happen with him yesterday?

They could be forcing him onto a 5-day cycle and he either didn’t have his stuff [ :) ], or he’s hurt [ :( ].

    From the SignOnSanDiego article:

•Having stretched out his arm with longer stints during his rehab with Triple-A Portland, right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer gave up two runs on three hits in one inning last night at Colorado Springs. He likely will appear in another game within a couple of days, the Padres’ way of preparing him for the return to their bullpen. Stauffer, while predominantly a starter throughout most of his professional career, was the team’s long reliever when sidelined by an appendectomy on May 10 in San Francisco.

According to this, the Padres are prepping him to return as the long reliever. But the way they’ve been using him in Portland, seems to be prepping him for starting. With Correia altering, we need another starter.
