There's a good article in the UT on the Padres needing another bat to take some of the pressure off of Adrian Gonzalez, a neccessity that we can pretty much agree on. The discussion on who Jeff Moorad and Jed Hoyer should go after? Ichiro Suzuki! This is what's being discussed.
We need an outfielder that can hit....Ichiro. we need a true leadoff hitter...Ichiro. we need a consistant hitter.....Ichiro Ichiro Ichiro! Seattle sucks, how bout the Padres spend a little for once and put together a package deal for Ichiro and Cliff Lee. How legit would the Padres be then?
There's no way we're getting Ichiro, for two big reasons:
1.) As brilliant as Ichiro has been throught his career, he is a leadoff hitter. We need someone hitting cleanup behind Gonzo, and I don't think Ichiro wants to bat in the #4 hole.
2.) The cost to get him would be some guys in our bullpen and top-level prospects, for a rent-a-hitter who will probably get offered big money by the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox (among other ballclubs that can and will pay Suzuki a sizeable salary) at the end of the season. It would be a great pickup short term, but long term, we would be doing more harm to the club than good.
The reality is that Hoyer is going to do what we've usually done as a club: get a hitter on the cheap and pray to God in Heaven that guy has some magic left in his bat. The day Jeff and Jed get one of the gretest hitting outfielders in recent memory is the day Lindsay Lohan pulls a Mickey Rourke, cleans up, gets her head right, stars in an award-callibur performance and gets an Oscar nomination for it.
