Around SBN: The Most Dangerous Division in Sports

A little nugget in this article points out that LeBlanc is in the bottom 5 in regards to opponent OPS. It's just one of those quirks of the schedule and probably falls under the category of better being luck than good. The article's main point is to juxtapose the HR/FB ratio for pitchers who face good hitters as oppose to pitchers who face worse hitters.

yeah, LeBlanc's WHIP has been scary as of late

He’s a lucky 5th though. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

wait...

Leblanc mainly faces poorer hitters? wouldnt that suggest that the entire Padres pitching staff faces poorer hitters? I’m not sure what to make of this.

I imagine that the implication is

he faces them through a combination of schedule (which teams he faces), match-ups (opposing managers may play splits that favor hitters with worse overall numbers) and circumstance (good hitters getting days off or being injured, meaning weaker hitters in the opposing lineup).

None of this is his “fault,” but I think it’s hard to deny that he doesn’t profile as the Madduxian pitcher we saw his first handful of starts, and luck plays into that.

I know I wish the writer would have used wOBA

But I doubt the results would have differed that much unless LeBlanc forced an exorbitant amount of 1 dimensional free swinging slugger types.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
