Padres take the series, demonstrate Padres Day dominance

I think my favorite part of today's game is the winning bits along with the offense. All of that is good stuff. Here are some notes in bullet form.

  • The extreme shift doesn't work on Adrian Gonzalez. All that happens is doubles from the slowest guy on the team.
  • I still say Will Venable will hit for the cycle within the next year.
  • Jerry Hairston Jr flamboyantly leaped over first base when he couldn't beat out an infield hit today. He moves with such flamboyance.
  • Nick Hundley knows how to hit the ball pretty good.
Final note: Nobody commented on this much at the time, but I swear that a ball that bounces over the right-centerfield fence should be a ground rule triple. As long as it hits the sand after bouncing the warning track Ground rule triple. Make this happen and somebody prove to my why it shouldn't be so.

GO PADRES!!!!

Hundley looking good

Glad to see someone able to protect Adrian.

This was a fun game.

Especially after that error and all those runs scored in the top of the first, when people were all, “Wahhhh we’re gonna lose this series to the worst team in baseball, WAHHHH.”

And then we scored a run. And another run. And then took the lead. And extended the lead. And kept extending it. All the while shutting down the Orioles.

I. LOVE. THIS. TEAM.

I need new pants.

I don't think I've been as pissed this season

As the sequence where Adrian muffed a play, Judy helped the cause by loading the bases, Zawadzki double clutched at 3rd (why is that no longer an error?) and the 3 run double. I thought I was going to turn into the Hulk. Nice to see the Orioles let us come back. A big shout out to whoever decided that following the scouting report on Venable was for sissies.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Seriously

Is there any one player as insistent on not making adjustments at the plate as William Venable? He may be the best all around athlete on the team, but seems to have no concept of changing your approach when you are failing in the same way over and over again.

Just for comparison

On June 20, 2009, the Padres were 29-38 and 15 games behind Los Angeles. They did not win their 40th game until July 29th, which put them at 40-62, and 22.5 games behind the Dodgers.

On June 20, 2008, the Padres were 32-43 and 7.5 games behind the Diamondbacks.

On June 20, 2007, the Padres were 41-29, and a half game ahead of the Diamondbacks for first place.

Zwad's error in the first

changed to an IF single.

I don’t think I agree with this.

I need new pants.

I don't either

The runner beat the throw to first, that’s an infield single most times.

well, Unless

Zwad some how slipped into a breach in the fabric of space and time, which somehow shifted his presence a second into the future, and by doing so not allowing him to make the throw in sufficient time, I think him holding onto the ball for as long as he did was, indeed, an error.

I understand that if a runner beats a throw to the bag it would be considered an infield single, but that usually corresponds with the infielder making a spectacular grab, or attempting to charge a slow roller, or high chopper.

Holding the ball too long often results in an infield hit, too.

MLB Channel just showed replay of Zwad's play

They called it an error, so it must be so.

Lance galloped forward like 3 times before throwing it.

We listened to almost the entirety of the game while driving up to L.A. to see my dad. Yep, we got caught in traffic. There were a few plays I wish I could have seen live! Anyway, the BBQ was full of my dad’s in-laws, and they are HUGE Dodger fans. One tried to needle me about how the Padres are doing well, but they’ll crash later in the season like they always do.

You guys know I’ve recently said that I can’t hate the Dodgers, grew up as a fan of them, etc. but I have to say I FOUND MYSELF GETTING A LITTLE BIT DEFENSIVE. So later in the evening when some of them were watching the Dodger game, I couldn’t help but smirk that they were at the time losing. We started listening to the game on KABC on the drive home, but those announcers were B-O-R-I-N-G and so we switched to satellite music instead.

Good guess

But I meant Sirius. If I’m listening to the Coffeehouse channel, there’s a good chance that album’s going to be in the rotation, though.
