Padres lose to Orioles; fail to take advantage of Dodger and Giant losses
Jeez that was frustrating. The Padres entered the game knowing that the Dodgers and Giants lost earlier in the day. But they they couldn't capitalize and pull off a win against a team with a .279 winning percentage.
In the first inning the Padres escaped sloppy base running with the Orioles playing even sloppier defense. Jerry Hairston Jr. cleaned up the mess by singling to center scoring two runs.
Clayton Richard gave up the go ahead runs in the 7th to Adam Jones on a 2 run homer to left.
Padres seemed lifeless until the bottom of the ninth when Jerry Hairston drew a walk and Anthony Gwynn doubled putting men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. I forget who it was, but someone hit a high chopper that scored Hairston, before Eckstein grounded out and Headley struck out to end the game.
Padres drop below .500 in June and find themselves face to face with a Must Win Game tomorrow.

Since sweeping the Giants in May
We’ve played .500 ball. I think this might be a .500 true talent team.

Sorry I couldn't bring home the win, GLB
I was screaming for Saladbar, it was his high chopper that got us close.

I'm not sure why Nick Hundley wasn't used
instead of Salazar. I imagine it was for some “I need to preserve my backup catcher in case of injury” thing, but really Nick is a much better hitter than Salazar and offered a much better chance of getting a game tying hit, rather than just grounding out.

Ugh, Clayton!
And Padres! Guys, you were supposed to win tonight! Silly kids.
Ems lost tonight, despite Matt Lollis pitching 5 no hit innings. Jedd Gyroko looks short to me, either that or the A’s have HUGE players on their short season a team. It was a good game though! I’ll post a link to pictures when I’m done uploading them and such.

Oo, Awesome!
I can’t wait to see!
Here are some pictures from last night! Just look at the tags to see who the player is. I’m pretty sure I got the right names with the right player

You are the only women I know
who actively lust after minor league baseball players.

Actually, I prefer MEN
I sent her photos of one Clayton Richard, a grown-ass man.
But, hey, I will look at her photos. Why the heck not?
I prefer to stay actively lusting, thanks. Heh.

It's games like this
that make me believe this just isn’t a playoff team. A playoff team wins games like these. I want to believe the Padres will be in the post-season, but the offense just isn’t there. They struggle to score more than 2 or 3 runs every day, and you just can’t keep winning like that, no matter how good your pitching or defense.

The sloppy baserunning would have been helped
if Hoffman had done something to indicate to Hairston what he wanted Gonzo to do … Hoffman never put up his hands or waved his arms or anything, just ran down the line and watched the play. Sad, really …
and btw wtf was Headley thinking on the grounder to first? ALWAYS run it out. The one in the 9th was foul, sorry y’all.
That's secondary
and not really a major issue. For the most part they’re an average base-running team, and even the best ones only net themselves about one extra win through that alone.

I'll take it
You identify 50 minor issues that will each result in an extra win and I’ll identify for you 50 easy fixes to a division title.
I don't think there's 50 minor issues to fix though.
Just the one big one, really. And I’m not sure what they can do about that. The problem is that while the young pitchers have either improved or stayed the same, the hitters have, almost to a man, gotten worse. Venable, Blanks, Headley, and Cabrera each had really good finishes to the season, but they’ve all been worse so far this year, and significantly so.

The problem is that the black holes in the lineup have multiplied.
Last year, when they finished strong, the only holes in the lineup were second base and catcher. Venable, Blanks, Headley, and Gwynn were all producing at an average or above average rate in the outfield, and Cabrera and Kouzmanoff were each hitting at about league average level. The only real below-average spots we had were Eckstein at second and the catcher position (though Hundley had a pretty good finish to the season).
Now, the entire outfield has fallen off the face of the earth, except Gwynn (when Buddy decides to play him). Headley is producing below-average offense, and Jerry Hairston is below replacement level. All we have is Adrian (superstar), Eckstein (slightly above average), Hundley (above average), and Gwynn (average).

Perfect way to sum up offensive deficiencies. Yet, with these ‘black holes’ the Padres have still been playing .500 ball for the last 20 games or so.
Padres 2010 Ole'
Thank God for pitching and defense.
Back in the first month and half of the season, guys like Venable and Headley were hitting well, and we played over .500 ball. We need to get back to that if we want to stay in the race.

Haven't we replaced some of that
With Gwynn hitting .366/.435/.585 in June and Adrian becoming otherworldly for the first time since 2009? Plus, as mediocre as Denorfia, Shrek and Salazar have been in June, it’s still better than what Blanks was supplying, I think.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Well I'm now 0-2 in games at Petco this year.
Hoping today it all turns around and we can take another series. A sweep would have been really nice but I’ll take a series win.

The series win is important
but a sweep would have been big, especially with our rivals losing. We’ve been treading water for a month now, haven’t lost ground but haven’t gained any either. They really need to get going and go on a bit of a run.

Agree
What we can’t do is lose today and the series to the lowly O’s. As long we keep winning to some extent and don’t take a dive, we’ll be fine. I would like to see .500 ball on the upcoming roadtrip. Rays will be tough, I’m thinking 2-1 against the Fins, 1-2 against the Rays.

I've just got a stale taste in my mouth.
The team has really been stagnant since mid-May, and thankfully are still in first place because our rivals have been just as bad. They need something to kick-start them and start improving their place in the standings again. While I doubt that it’s possible, I agree with Sam’s sentiment from last night that they desperately need another quality hitter, and that could be the spark plug they need.
