Padres regain a share of first place via Hundley walkoff!

Game ball tonight goes to jodes for keeping the faith throughout the game tonight while foulweather fans had given up the game in the face of the potential blowout being down by 1. It was an insurmountable lead one run that the Padres had to make up and the 2010 Padres simply do not come from behind to win in walkoff fashion were used to the situation and again, took the loss just like the foulweathers figured they would victory home with Hundley's walkoff sac and rewarded the friar faithful.

WE MAY AS WELL TRADE ADRIAN IF THIS TEAM IS GONNA SUCK AS PREDICTED

GO PADRES!!! FIRST PLACE!!!

I feel real bad for Kevin Correia. If my brother died suddenly like his, I know I wouldn’t be right in the head for quite a while, much less just over a month since it happened.

So...Baseball is really a game of run prevention.

More than it is a game of run production? Whoa, gotta let that one sink in a minute.

Sexy lineups are nice, but having great pitching and defense are the key to winning ball games. So if your crafting a ball club, your much better off spending your resources getting great pitching and athletic defenders than you are going after the Manny Ramirez ’s of the world. It makes sense, but having these Padres go out and prove it has been a real eye opener.

"Never have a motto, that's what I always say" - Me

by padmadfan on Jun 12, 2010 12:30 AM PDT up reply actions

They both work.

For example, the Yankees and Red Sox each have the best offensive lineups in the game, but their pitching ain’t all that great. They’re still over each over .500 and in playoff contention.

But in our case we didn’t have the talent or the resources to build a lineup that was good at putting runs on the board. So instead, we had to go the opposite route, and it’s worked very well.

I know that '84 team well

Wiggins and Gwynn were out of their minds and a crap load of proven vets in Nettles, Garvey, Templeton… with McReynolds, Kennedy and even Carmelo Martinez with XB power….true, they didn’t hit much that year…but match them up with Headley, Denorfia, Gwynn Jr. , Hairston Jr……difference is that this years pitching is obviously better but will it be this good the whole year ? Maybe.

June swoon

Its that time again, but this time it won’t be us. A team that actually turns to a swami for help. Yeh, bet that really went well in the Dodgers locker room.

I agree. The Giants are the team we need to focus on.

nor was I too keen about Suzuki (A’s hottest hitter) missing the entire Giants series for bereavement leave.

All players I’d rather see playing than Salazar or Denorfria.

I wasn't able to see tonight's game

But I watched the highlights on Sports Center. This is one team that refuses to go out quietly, and its been a pleasure to watch that type of swagger this season.

Having said that, am I the only person who’s freaked about Kevin Correia? I like him a lot, but he damn-near cost us this game. His command has been inconsistent, his 6th inning troubles have now bled into the 5th, and his ERA has risen to 5.03.

Great game!

The drunk Mexican soccer fans in the next section over kept up entertained by cheering incoherent cheers at random moments.

One thing that was cool was that everyone in my group KNEW the Padres would come back in the bottom of the 9th. And we KNEW they would win. There was no doubt.

Can’t wait for tomorrow’s game. I saw the scarf up close. It’s a nice one.

So, I just watched the rerun of the game

And I feel the need to say a few things here:
Boys. Be careful with those who hit the walk off hit/homer//sacrifice/whatever. Especially one of our better hitters at the moment.
I like Seattle’s broadcast. Not as much as I like when The Tony Gwynn is in the booth. But it’s acceptable when I don’t feel like listening to Dick and I have the big screen to myself.
I’m excited to watch batting practice tomorrow. Even though it’ll be the Mariners batting practice.
If the Pads wore their pant legs up like Ichiro does, I bet everyone on the team would be as good as Ichiro.
I miss Griffey Jr. He looks so young for his age, and it’s kind of creepy, but kind of awesome at the same time. I hope I look that young when I’m older.
That was an awesome win.
I love this team. A lot.

And to save you all some time:

Went with mom-in-law...

I had faith, as they looked threatening (1) all night. She didn’t, I think because she doesn’t like extra winnings.

Scrappy win, which was nice.

I did start whining when Salazar came up to pinch hit – WTF (though he didn’t that innings)? And buddy leaving Correia in too long. But I knew we’d win.

Second biggest cheer of the night was the 8th inning highlights of the damn dodgers vs Angels when they were down 8-1

Biggest cheer was the walk off, of course ;)

Two solid Tony Gwynn hits – guess dressing like Suzuki helps. That little guy is a pain, such a threat.

Chris

(1) by threatening, I mean leaving eleventy seven on bases, as per frigging usual.

...which reminds me, rule question

TGJr got a triple, then a double, then awarded first base by fielders choice.

Redundant now, but would that count as a single in a cycle?

by ABY on Jun 12, 2010 8:03 AM PDT reply actions

yep

the general idea being that a fielder’s choice is a ball in play that would normally result in the batter being out. it’s like an error in that you don’t get credit for a hit because it was the actions of the fielders that allowed you to reach safely rather than your own hitting prowess.

He did just have a quality start

6 innings 3 runs. He kept us in the game. Maybe stauffer will need to replace him in the rotation just not after last night. Plus it’s not like Stauffer has a track record of succeeding as a starter in the majors and we do know that Correia is capable of doing so.

We haz respect?

At least one NY writer refuses to use the fluke word, and in fact is risking the wrath of his fellow mediots. Jeff Francoer wrote in the Times “I’m not going to miss seeing these guys for the rest of the season”, and went on to praise the Padres bullpen as “Probably the best 12 guys on a staff.”

Jason Bay apparently agrees, telling the Daily news among other positive comments, “Every guy in their pen has a purpose, has a pitch that is above average.”

Tony Gwynn Jr. is having himself one hell of a June.

Here’s his June triple slash so far: .409/.500/.591 over 22 PAs. Small sample, but still.

When we look at his batted ball stats, we can see what’s going on. His BABIP for the month of June is .474, a far cry from .289 in April and .175 in May. The difference is because he’s finally not hitting weak fly balls in 40% of his PAs. In June his LD% is 33.3%, up from 19.4% in May and much closer to his career 22.6% mark.

It would be nice if he’s finally getting going, because he could give us a nice lead-off presence at the top of the lineup.
