Pads get one hit by the Mets, turn triple play

Padres drop their first series since being swept by the Dodgers back on May 20th.  This time they lose to the Mets and I'm pretty sure that they've only lost 4 series so far this season.

In this second game of the doubleheader the Padres were only able get one hit on the ugly head of Jon Niese.  With this loss the Padres finish 3-4 on the road trip, which I believe is the first time they've had a losing road trip since the beginning of the season.  I could be wrong about these things though, since I'm not actually looking at any stats.

One of the few positives of the game was Chase Headley starting what turned out to be the 9th triple play in Padres history and their first since 1997.

Looking forward to the Padres coming home, seems like they've been gone forever. Come home to our warm bosom.

Here's my prediction

Cunningham is coming up and Denorfia is going down.

Carrillo is also coming up and will either make the start on Monday or be a tandem starter (or mop up man if you prefer) for someone else (Gallagher, maybe). They will DFA Mujica to do this. Mujica will be sent to Portland if no one claims him.

After Carrillo’s start/appearance they will call up Stauffer and send Carrillo back down.

They have to do something about that Monday start. Either they trust Gallagher to do it or they pitch Garland on short rest (which he is very willing and anxious to do). However, since Carrillo was pulled and it would give them an opportunity to skip a Latos start, then those two options don’t seem likely.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

Even without all this going on

It made me realize that Stauffer coming back forces the Padres to make a move. They either have to send down one of the following to make room:
Latos, Richard, LeBlanc, Thatcher, Webb or Gregerson

DFA/trade one of the following to make room:
Garland, Correia, Gallagher, Mujica, Adams or Bell

Or replace a position player with Stauffer.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

As much hate as there has been around here for Mujica

I think that to DFA Mujica is waste. His is a valuable pitcher despite his HR problem. I can’t not see some other team snatching him up. Do you think it’s possible that if there is a trade in here somewhere that he would be a part of it? Or do you think that no one will actually claim him and the Padres risk DFA?

by polyrhythm07 on Jun 10, 2010 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions

agree

The Padres would lose Mujica. He’s a fairly valuable swing guy who can pitch long and short relief. But, as Wonko has layed out , the Pads don’t appear to have many options.

I would be inclined to argue

Because I think Mujica is a major leaguer (a fringy one), but not in our pen. And, he’s due a raise next year that we won’t want to pay. If he does get picked up and injuries happen we still can bring up Russell, Poreda, Frieri or, in a pinch, Liz, plus we could use the extra 40 man roster spot to add someone else.

Sorry, let me clarify

Valuable to some other organization. I personally would like to see Mujica go. Cost, depth, other talent – we don’t need him. If he is valuable to some other team, which I think he could be, I would just want something back in return as oppose to just giving him away.

But I am probably just being greedy. There might be bigger issues at need before working a trade out. In that circumstance maybe it is better just to let him go because what we lose really isn’t all that much of a loss for us.

by polyrhythm07 on Jun 10, 2010 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Mooo Heee Kaaaahhh

Sucks Kak. If someone else picks him up… we get to hit more home runs. He looks like a MLer… smells like one… but when you realize that like all of the .212 of BABIP go over the wall… you realize that its better to be stomped in the nuts than have him pitch in a relief like sitch.
