  • Bell welcomes Marines with softball game | padres.com: News
A softball field was set up in the outfield, where Marines and their families got the chance to play and have a barbecue with Bell and other Padres -- including Clayton Richard, Chase Headley, Sean Gallagher, Chris Young (who did not play) and team president and CEO Tom Garfinkel.

  • Ryan called up with Torrealba away | padres.com: News
The Padres officially recalled catcher Dusty Ryan from Triple-A Portland on Monday to replace Yorvit Torrealba, who was placed on the restricted list.

  • The Official Blog of Matt Antonelli: MINI VACATION
Over the next week or so I will continue to get treatment and exercise for my hand, while starting to strength train a little more aggressively now that my hand is starting to feel much stronger.

  • Lines Form on My Face and Hands – Ducksnorts
It was like one of those weird dreams. Every time I looked up, the Padres had the bases loaded and nobody out, with Luis Durango at the plate. That exact configuration occurred three times. What I’m trying to say is, I need to look up more often.

  • Chainsaw: Lies, Damn Lies And Statistics
Joe Torre can play this shell game only so long. There are only so many walk-off balks in one lifetime. It’s going to catch up.

  • Correia is "real close" " NCTimes.com Blogs
"The 90-plus pitches he threw, a lot of them were quality," Black said. "… His arm feels good. His stuff is good. He’s real close to stringing, I think, some real solid innings together."

  • Bob Scanlan HeyScan email responses for 5-31-10 PART 1 (of 2)
Topics discussed here: Padre All-Star candidates; Padres shoppers or sellers and what is current need; details seen on Tony Gwynn statue; Mets’ bullpen choice to bring in lefty; most runs scored by a Padre ball club and my unknown involvement…

  • Bob Scanlan HeyScan email responses for 5-31-10 PART 2 (of 2)
Topics covered here: Difference between 4-seam, 2-seam, slider and "back-door" breaking ball; does a bases loaded walk earn an RBI and if so why; middle infielders phantom touch of second base on double plays, in the park grand slam homeruns, Padres current NL rank in errors committed.

  • Early Fireworks For Padres On Memorial Day
"We have an understanding," joked Correia after the game, "before I go out there, (the offense knows) that they need to score some runs. They’ve been unbelievable. I think I just broke my own record for run support."

  • Draft always critical for Padres :: Friar Forecast
It is critical that this regime not only evaluate talent well, but also not be afraid to spend the extra dollar. If the Padres are confident in their ability to evaluate a draft class – and they should be, with all the brainpower in the front office – then they shouldn’t be worried about spending that extra money. In the long run, it will be money well spent.

  • The Friarhood - Getting the D-Train back on track in San Diego?
In my opinion the Padres need to be aggressive in the small market with low risk, high reward type players like Dontrelle. We as baseball fans here this all the time, pitching, pitching and more pitching.

  • Unfinished Business: Grand Slam Domination
Let me start off by saying that it's not very often that we completely dominate like this. And I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Friars on Cardboard: To Shave Or Not To Shave?
Well, May is over and I have a dilemma.

  • THE KEPT FAITH: Center Field
It is clear now that Tony Gwynn Jr. should just go back down to Portland.

    The rumor is

That these are just legal proceedings. His family has already been relocated to the United States (According to Yorvit and a number of articles that can be googled) so its unlikely that anything bad happened to his family. It also speaks well of the situation that Yorvit notified the team days in advance that he would be leaving whereas if something dire had happened he most likely would have left immediately.

    Tipped pitch.

Mets fans say that Jhairston was tipped by renteria on that grand slam pitch.

The evidence sighted is jhairston pointing toward the 1st base side as he passed it on his HR trot.

    Also

Scan pointed out that Hairston cheated up in the batters box. Scan said the reason for this is that the pitcher won’t adjust his breaking ball pitch accordingly. So, if you are up in the box the breaking pitch would be in you wheelhouse as opposed to back in the box where it would be in the dirt.

    Hmm

I was thinking the Dodgers would buy a ticket. The DBacks make sense too. It seems to me he’s probably better suited to be a long reliever or a starter you have a quick hook with. Neither of which will make a damn bit of difference in Arizona.

Too expensive (Buehrle), no place to play him (Konerko), headcase who isn’t better than what we have (Pierzynski) and all of the above (Jenks).

The obvious landing spot for Konerko is Anaheim after the Kendry Morales thing. If I were the Cubs I’d want Buehrle for the PR move.

He said not today, but in the next couple of days.

Blanks is 10 days to 2 weeks. They want to give him lots of at bats.

CY has no extra injuries – just needs more time for his shoulder to heal. He will not be back before the break.

    actually

with my mac i can change the language of the computer, which I have enabled with ukrainian and russian forms of cyrillic. all I have to do is selected the flag of the language i wish to type in. i don’t have cyrillic keys so its a guessing game until i memorize where each letter is.

i go to ‘international’ on my system preferences folder and it has a whole bunch of languages there

by Kozak on Jun 1, 2010 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

    Ah yes.

I did that with my old computer. It was an adventure trying to write papers in Russian, because like you I didn’t have Cyrillic symbols on my keyboard. I got to the point where I was pretty good at remembering where each key was, though it’s been so long I don’t remember any more.

    Are you a native speaker?

by Kozak on Jun 1, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I took Russian 4 years in college

and did a study abroad there. I’ve looked at some Ukranian and it seemed similar enough. When presented with Ukranian text I can kind of sort of read it. Usually I can figure out what it says. Is it like that for you with Russian?

    pretty much

it is much easier to understand when listening to it as opposed to reading it. the russians are nuanced in the pronunciation of some of the same letters so reading it can confuse the shit out of me sometimes. but i can read it slowly, not as fast as ukrainian.

ok, let's just admit it, the people speaking German above are being nazis.

I, however, am one of the German freedom fighters who is protecting the Jewish people from the SS.

    What they were saying:
The above Germans were talking about how amazing and great that so many people here speak German.

Also, they think Shrek is coming back on Wednesday.

And I think there might be sausages… but not sure about this last point.

[disclaimer: The above was simply a joke. Obviously no one here is a nazi or anything resembling a nazi. Being proud of one’s German heritage and one’s ability to speak German is good. The joke above does not represent the actual views of any person who visits, owns, or is in any way related to this blog. Although, if you happen to be reading this, and are in all reality a nazi, I would totally go Inglourious Basterds on your ass. Actually, it’s a pretty good movie. A bit violent, but well done and a very interesting look into the nature of human beings, their motivations, and their actions.]
