San Diego Padres Fan Confidence Poll: 6/1/2010

And now we reach the point of the season where Padres fan's faith is shook to the bitter core... JUNE.

April doesn't count. First place at the end of April? It means nothing.

May doesn't really count either because we expect to do well in May. May means nothing either.

June doesn't even really count, but it counts just a little bit more than the first two months of the season.

The Padres are playing well, but everybody says it's an illusion and the way statistics work, illusions are meant to be broken.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

This is boilerplate:

The rules are simple. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no confidence at all, 10 being absolute confidence, How confident are you in the San Diego Padres organization?

"Confidence" is just about anything you want to interpret it as. The front office, the future prospects, the play on the field, the park, etc etc etc.

Vote once with your heart of hearts. Vote twice with your cheating heart.

Poll
On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being "not confident at all" and 10 being "absolute confidence": How confident are you in the San Diego Padres?

(a) The official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher that pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead, unless
(1) such pitcher is a starting pitcher and Rule 10.17(b) applies; or

Plus; all the stories about good experiences at the ballpark lead me to believe that the FO is seriously committed to this team and its fans. Moved from 7 to 8

We’re holding together despite some starters struggling, we are getting healthy and if the offense can get just a smidgen better…

I am a little worried about low attendance figures this year hurting next year’s payroll when a number of players (Bell, Hairston, Adams, Mujica, Gwynn, Stauffer) will earn raises, we might want Garland or Correia back and we’ll be looking to upgrade the offense. The minors aren’t going to provide much 2011 either at the rate some of the AA and AAA guys are going.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I honestly see this getting better in the next couple months

If we start winning more… we are approaching true Summer… If the Padres are still in 1st at the All-star break we will have more national attention brought to the team.

What we need is a blockbuster movie that talks about a couple who’s relationship is tested by a love of the Padres… we could call it “Surfer Pitch” it could star Ashton Kurtcher and… Jennifer Aniston.

We’ve seen a few injuries during may… actually, quite a few injuries/personal issues, and yet… still 2 games up.

That means our call ups have performed “adequately”. I’ve been happy with how Denorfia has performed. 40 ABs and hitting over .300. I don’t care what type of illusion that is, that helps this team. I think he is technically our most potent weapon in the outfield (since Shrek has been MIA).

Also, can I just say that it is great to have a catcher position that is batting (combined):

~.290 / .370 / .425 (BA/OBP/SLG)

Yes, we don’t care about BA, but honestly, we need someone to hit the ball out of the infield if we want to score more than 2 runs per game (other than Adrian and Eck).

Once Shrek is back, an outfield of Shrek/Denorfia/Gwynn/Venable does not look too bad (not great either, but good enough).

Also, have we stopped stealing bases… or slowed down?

by Zen Blade on Jun 1, 2010 12:02 PM PDT reply actions

I care about average... particularly in RISP situations.

Closest we have to measuring clutch!

This may be true...

But there are things about baseball that are unobservable. Particularly with how some players deal with stress and pressure. A hit is a hit, and it is recorded as average… and I want a guy who can hit on the team…

"This team looks dangerous, like a convict with a temper, nothing to lose and a switch blade." -jbox

by MrDanielX on Jun 1, 2010 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the noise with the clutch hitting becomes a problem

Because the situation is “clutch” for everyone. So, how the fielder going after the ball reacts, adjusts, moves, etc. is affected by the clutch situation. The catcher calling the pitch or setting up is affected by it. The umpires are affected by it. The pitcher is affected by it. How the wind reacts… oh wait, no not that. Anyway, all those things end up changing the entire situation.

Did the player get a hit because he was better in the clutch or because one or more of the defenders was bad in the clutch? What if the hitter got “lucky” because he kept coming through in the clutch in situations where the defenders were bad in the clutch? How can I tell him apart from the guy that came through on his own? How can I tell if the defenders are clutch? And then you combine that with random events like bats breaking or wind gusts or whatever and you just add to the noise in what becomes a relatively small sample size.

So, while I’m with you and I want guys that come through in the clutch, there’s not really any measurement that’s “close” to measuring clutch.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Jun 1, 2010 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I am just saying that it is as close as we get

While there is a lot of noise… it is noise in every situation. In otherwords “clutch” or RISP situations are always just that except the difference between mattering and not… i.e. tied or a blow out man on 2nd. Regardless I want guys who can hit the damn ball.

Up from 7 to 8

Positives:

  • We keep winning series.
  • Jon Garland is off to his best start in is career (6-2, with a 2.15 ERA, and an OBA of .232), while Mat Latos and Clayton Richard continue to mature as starting pitchers.
  • San Diego has something we haven’t had in a long time: catchers who can throw our baserunners and hit worth a damn! The one-two combo of Nick Hundley and Yorvit Torreaba have a combined average of .282.
  • The bullpen is still lights out, unlike a certain linebacker who hasn’t lived up to his nickname in a while.

Negatives:

  • Kevin Correia continues to break down during the 6th inning, and had a mini-crisis last night.
  • Wade LeBlanc has dropped three straight, after showing dominance the first five games, all of which the Pads have won under his pitching.
  • Offense is batting .248, third lowest in the National League. Guys like Venable and Blanks, who showed great potential in the second half of last season, have a combined 103 K’s.
  • Injuries: Scott Harriston and E-Cab are on the 15-day DL, while CY, imo, doesn’t look like he’s going to return anytime soon.

But their plan is nothing about building on the team now, but to get all the position players through the farm. That is in the future, at least 2-4 years in the future. Which is what most every franchise wants, but, when we suddenly have a squad that exceeding expectations, no moves to win now. I am guessing.

KT, for right or wrong, I think would have rolled the dice and made moves to give this team a chance to win now. If they are winning through June he would have.

I just hope they keep winning, making it too uncomfortable for Moorad and co. to execute on the plan.

OK, my real number is like 9. I frickin’ love this team, but just wanted to rant about a grudge against Moorad and co.

So, you'd prefer to raid our farm system now and blow any chance we have of building a

complete core of young homegrown players in the future?

If you expect us to make moves now to win now, then you have to accept that the flip side to that is giving up prospects of value. I’m 100% against doing that… and I think Jed is probably trying to hint at that as well.

We need to stay the course for the long term regardless of what happens this season.

Not saying blow out our farm system..

But spending some money. Be on the other side of a salary dump. They passed on Burrell and Dye. Not saying either of those guys are the right moves, but, at least with Dye, it was mentioned they passed for financial reasons.

I guess the scenario I cringe against...

Is we are 1-5 games back in late July, and they execute the AGon and Bell trades. Is it their fault that is what MLB economics force small market teams to do? No. But it still pisses me off, and they are buying into it by saying “We can compete each year through player development and scouting.” Maybe. But the rich teams are trying to do that too. And can spend more money on signing bonuses.

Only Minnesota has been able to consistently compete through player development. Even Oakland cannot do that. Tampa is making the case, but can they maintain it? And they accumulated some great talent through horrible years. Texas as well, but still early on them as well.

I would prefer someone saying “Hey we are going to do the best we can until there is substantive revenue sharing/salary cap.”

This can be done without screwing players. For example, if the “cap” was an amount that allocated 90% of baseball revenue to player salaries, it would not hurt players. But to afford that, there has to be bigger revenue sharing.

What I don't understand is that you're giving them low marks for what you think is going to happen in the future.

Adrian has NOT been traded yet. The Padres have the best record in the NL. Jed has said repeatedly that the Padres will not be trading away pieces as long as they’re in contention… and has, in fact, said that the Padres will be BUYERS if it makes sense. Also, the “salary dump” type moves that you’re referring to don’t happen in April and May or even June. It’s crazy to be upset about not seeing a move like that yet… we’re not really to the point in the season where teams are accepting that they’re out of contention and willing to get rid of big contracts.

I can understand giving them low confidence marks if all the things you say come to pass… but that’s a lot of ifs as of right now.

fair points...

I just think they under-estimated the quality of the team, not making low risk, low duration moves that could have brought in some offense while we sort out how can actually play at the major league level.

They expected the team to flounder in the mid to low end of the division, allowing a cheap season of “testing” the youngsters.

Our offense is atrocious. If we had a middling offense, I could see us 5 games up with a real chance for the playoffs. Trades later, while nice, would still get a passable offense in the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the season. Imagine having one now.
